Note
The ratings are based on an ambient temperature o f 45°C and a maximum conductor
operating temperature of 90°C. They apply to a single circuit in which up to six cables
may be bunched together. If there are more than six cables a derating factor of 0.85
should be applied. Considerably higher ratings may be possible for specific installation
conditions (see table A7.2).

N O T E S O N C U R R E N T RATINGS F O R S P E C I F I C
INSTALLATION CONDITIONS

Ambient and maximum cable temperature

Certain authorities do not regard the regulations governing shipwiring cables, e.g. the
IEE Regulations for the Electrical and Electronic Equipment o f Ships, and the current
ratings so prescribed, as applicable to offshore applications. Consequently, higher
ratings may be adopted which exploit the full thermal capabilities o f the cable materials.
Instead o f an ambient temperature of 45°C, the ratings in table A7.2 are based on a
temperature o f 30°C.

General installation conditions

The current ratings in table A7.2 are based on the following installation conditions.

Metallic protection
As cables on platforms at sea are chiefly used in flameproof installations, they have a
metallic protection layer which assists glanding and earthing arrangements. The ratings
assume that the metallic covering is bonded at both ends, as required in hazardous
locations. The covering is usually a galvanised steel wire braid but single-core cables
have a non-magnetic (phosphor bronze) wire braid.

Iron or steel surfaces

The ratings assume that single-core cables are installed remotely from iron or ferrous
concrete (other than cable supports) and that cables which carry 250A or more are
spaced from any steel deck or bulk head by a distance of at least 50 mm.

Isolation of circuits
One circuit is isolated from other circuits or groups o f cables as follows:

(a) horizontal clearances of not less than the overall width o f an individual circuit,
except that the distance need not exceed 150 mm;
(b) horizontal clearances o f not less than six times the overall diameter of an individual
cable;
(c) vertical distance between circuits not less than 150 mm;
(d) if the number of circuits exceeds four they are installed in a horizontal plane.

Cables in free air or on a cable tray

The ratings given in columns 2-5 of table A7.2 are calculated assuming the following.

Single-core cables flat spaced (column 2)

(a) Cables are fixed by supports to the vertical surface of a wall, any supporting
metalwork under the cables occupying less than 10% of the plan area.
(b) They are installed either vertically one above the other, or horizontally, the distance
between cables being not less than the cable diameter De and the distance from the
wall to the nearest cable not less than 0.5De.*
Cables for Fixed Installation (Shipwiring and Offshore) 839

Single-core cables touching (column 3)

Three single-core cables are installed in contact with one another in flat f o r m a t i o n on a
perforated cable tray or in trefoil formation either on a perforated cable tray or fixed to
a vertical wall. When fixed to a wall condition (a) above for spaced cables applies. The
distance f r o m the wall to the nearest cable should be not less than 0 . 5 D e or, where two
cables are equidistant from the wall, not less than 0.75D~.*

Multicore cables (columns 4 and 5)

Cables are installed singly either on a perforated cable tray or fixed to a vertical wall.
When fixed to a wall, condition (a) above for spaced single-core cables applies, and the
minimum distance between cable and wall is 0.3De.*

Cables cupped to a surface (columns 6-9)

Cables are clipped direct to or lying on a non-metallic surface. Single-core cables are in
contact with one another, and m a y be installed in trefoil formation.

Group rating factors

F o r rating factors of groups of cables other than those covered in table A7.2, reference
should be made to other published data or to the cable manufacturer.

* See general installation conditions above relating to iron or steel surfaces.
