APJ ABDUL KALAM TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
SIXTH SEMESTER B.TECH DEGREE EXAMINATION(R&S), MAY 2019
Course Code: CE 364
Course Name: ADVANCED FOUNDATION ENGINEERING
Max. Marks: 100 Duration: 3 Hours
PART A
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15marks. Mark
s
1 a) Explain the effect of water table on bearing capacity of soil (5)
b Calculate the net ultimate bearing capacity of a rectangular footing 2m (10)
) x 4m in plan, founded at depth of 1.5m below the ground surface. The
load on the footing acts at an angle of 150 to the vertical and is
eccentric in the direction of width by 15cm. the saturated unit weight
of the soil is 18 kN/m3. The rate of loading is slow and hence the
effective shear strength parameters can be used in the analysis c’ = 15
kN/m2 and Φ= 25o, Natural WT is at depth of 2m below the GS. Use
IS code method. Nc = 5.14, N =, Nq =11for  = 25o
2 a) Explain the concept of floating raft with neat sketch (7)
b Proportion a square footing to carry a load of 150 t from a column. (8)
) The depth of foundation is to be kept at 2m below the GS. Maximum
permissible settlement of footing is 40mm and a FOS of 3 is required
against shear failure. The subsoil is sand with an average corrected N
value of 18 is established from borings. WT is at a large depth. Use
Teng’s Correlations.
3 a) Explain any two methods for the analysis of raft. (5)
b A square footing 1.8m x 1.8m with a 0.4m x 0.4m square column is (10)
) loaded with an axial load of 1800 kN and mx = 450 kNm and
My = 360 kNm. Given c=20 kPa, Φ= 36o, depth of footing = 1.8m,
γ = 18 kN/m3, WT is at a depth of 6m from the GS. Determine the net
safe bearing capacity using IS code recommendations. Take FOS = 3

PART B
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks.
4 a) Determine the allowable pile load capacity of 40 cm diameter pile (15)
(driven) shown in figure. Take K = 1, = 0.67. Nc = 9, N =, Nq
=120for  = 40o .

5 a) a) A concrete pile of 40 cm diameter is required to be driven into a (5)

homogeneous mass of cohesion less soil. The pile carries a safe load
of 650 kN. A static cone penetration test conducted at the site indicates
an average value of qc = 40 kg/cm2 along the pile and 120 kg/cm2
below the pile tip. Compute the length of pile with FOS = 2.5
b A precast concrete pile 35 x 35 cm is driven by a single acting steam (10)
) hammer. Estimate the allowable load using Modified Hiley Formulae.
Given the maximum rated energy as 3500 kN.cm, Weight of hammer
= 35 kN, length of pile = 15m, efficiency of hammer = 0.8, e = 0.5,
weight of pile cap = 3kN. Assume driving is done using short dolly.
Penetration per blow = 2.54 cm.
6 a) Explain how cyclic pile load test in detail. Explain in detail the (12)
procedure to separate pint resistance and skin friction from the cyclic
pile load test data.

b A reinforced concrete pile of size 30 x 30 cm and 10 m long is driven (3)

) into coarse sand extending to a great depth. The average total unit
weight of soil is 18 kN/m3 and the average N value is 15. Determine
the allowable load on pile by making use of N value.

PART C
Answer any two full questions, each carries 20marks.
7 a) With neat sketch explain the components of well foundation (8)
b A group of nine piles of 200 mm diameter is to be arranged in a square (12)
) pattern in a clay soil with centre to centre spacing of 500 mm.
Calculate the settlement of a pile group by equivalent raft approach for
conditions shown below. Ground water table is at the ground surface.

8 a) What are the precautions to adopted to avoid tilts and shifts in the case (10)
of well foundations? What are the different methods used to rectify
tilts and shifts of well foundation. Explain any four in detail with neat
sketch
b A group of nine piles, 12 m long and 250 mm in diameter is to be (10)
) arranged in a square form in a clay soil with an average unconfined
compressive strength of 60 kN/m2. Workout the centre to centre
spacing of piles for a group efficiency factor of 1. Neglect the bearing

at the tip of piles. Assume α = 0.9.

9 a) Explain the Terzhaghi’s analysis of lateral stability of well foundation. (10)
b A nine pile group arranged in a square pattern is used as a foundation (10)
) for a column in sand (Φ = 320). Piles of 300 mm in diameter and 10 m
in length are placed at a spacing of 900 mm in each direction.
Calculate the load carrying capacity of pile group. Assume γ = 18
kN/m3 and FOS = 2.5.
What will be the settlement of pile group according to Skempton’s
method? Take the settlement of single pile as 2.5 mm.
