ñ c nit 4 Revised Project Proposal: Domestic Violence Website
c November 12, 2010
Domestic violence is a growing concern in today¶s society. Many victims feel that they are
alone and have nowhere to turn to. For our English 320, nit 4 individual project, I have chosen
to design a website that will make readers aware of what domestic violence is, when to get help,
and how to get help. There are many websites out there informing readers about what domestic
violence is and gives phone numbers to call for counseling, but I decided to take it a step further
and include a blog on my website where victims can post their personal stories to make readers
aware of how serious domestic violence really is. In the sections to follow, I have included
information including: what I hope to gain from this project, how I will go about completing it,
and the sources I used to enhance my knowledge on domestic violence.
ñ
Since the number of cases of domestic violence is increasing in the nited States, I have decided
to design a webpage that will inform readers about domestic violence and give victims the
chance to post their personal stories as well as have the opportunity to give advice and guidance
to other victims. Often times, victims of domestic violence find it hard to talk to people that
have not experienced it themselves, so I feel my website will encourage victims to share their
stories, get help, and take a weight off their chests. Also, to make readers aware of domestic
violence and when they should reach out for help, I will include pages on my website that
include facts and statistics about domestic violence; what the signs of domestic violence are and
when victims should get help; along with contact information for some of the hotlines and
counseling centers where victims can go to seek guidance and talk with counselors.
As stated above, I have decided to include different pages on my website containing information
about domestic violence. On the home page for my website, I will include a heading labeled
³About Domestic Violence´ and provide the definition of domestic violence, who it can affect,
and statistics on how many people become victims. Also on my home page will be links to the
other pages included on my website. One of these pages will be titled ³Who is at Risk´ and on
this page I will include important information as to who can be at risk for domestic violence. As
a victim of domestic violence, it may be hard to realize that there really is a problem and it is
indeed time to get help which leads me into the next page on my website. This page will be
titled ³When to Get Help´ and it will list the signs and symptoms of domestic violence so that
the readers will know if they are at risk and if they should consider seeking help. The next page
on my website will be called ³How to Get Help´ and it will include phone numbers for domestic
violence hotlines along with counseling centers/hospitals that viewers can contact to seek
guidance from professionals. As I mentioned in my introduction, the main part of my website is
a blog that allows readers to post their personal stories and where other readers can comment and
offer their guidance. In my research, I found that the reason why it¶s hard for victims to speak
up and get help is because they feel that talking to people who haven¶t experienced domestic
violence themselves have no help to offer, so I feel that including a blog will encourage victims
to speak up and it will make it easier for victims to talk to other victims. Overall, there will be
five pages included on my website.
In order for me to provide appropriate information, correct facts, and useful information for
victims of domestic violence, I have done extensive research and increased my knowledge on my
topic. At the end of my proposal is a list of sources I used to do this. I chose to view various
types of websites that talk about all kind of domestic violence for all kinds of people. Often
times, men are stereotyped as being the abusers and women are stereotyped as the victims.
However, in my research, I have found that this is not always the case. My website will focus on
domestic violence for both genders and for people of all ages. Also, I used my research to find
examples of domestic violence websites so that I could build an appropriate website with useful
and appropriate information.

When I started thinking about this assignment, I wanted to do something I had never done before
to make this more of a learning experience. One thing I have never worked with before is
designing web pages, so in order for this assignment to be successful, I have created the
following goals and objectives:
0 Since domestic violence is a serious subject, my overall goal for this assignment is to
create a website that is easy to understand and navigate and that provides effective and
useful information that assures me I have created a sense of hope for some victims.
0 During my research process, I will gain a good understanding of what an effective
domestic violence website should contain in order for the viewers to obtain useful
information and to want to reach out and get help from other victims or professionals.
0 Since domestic violence is a touchy subject for many victims, I will review blogs during
my research process to help me figure out what information to include on my website to
encourage and help victims as well as what information I should leave out that may spark
up thoughts of bad memories.
0 I will take what I learn from this project and apply it to other applicable projects and
continue to expand my knowledge on the effective design of web pages.
0 Since I am majoring in accounting, I would potentially in the future like to open my own
business where I can help customers with their accounting needs, so having knowledge
with designing web pages will help me in the future if I ever need to create one for my
business.
c ñ
In order to meet my objectives, I will need to do extensive research on how to create an effective
website that includes appropriate information for a domestic violence website. One of my main
concerns is making sure that I do not put any information on my website that may be bias or that
may hurt an individual rather than giving them hope. Also, I feel that it will be helpful for my
project to visit hospital websites along with counseling center websites to get a good idea of what
information will be particularly helpful to victims and other readers on my website. Since I am
not a domestic violence victim, I am not quite sure what would help them cope with their
personal situations and that is what my overall objective is. Since I would like to use what I
learned from this project in the future, I will go beyond just finding domestic violence websites,
but also finding business websites in general to help me evaluate what an effective and
understandable website contains.
In order to meet the objectives described above, these are the steps I will follow:
1. I will first research domestic violence, visit many websites on domestic violence, and
view additional websites to form a good idea of what my website design will look like.
2. Next, I will sketch out the design of each of my pages to be sure the information will fit
and that it will flow appropriately; the images will add to the overall appearance of my
page; and to be sure I have used an appropriate design.
3. After that, I will add my information to each of my website pages as well as insert
necessary graphics, background images, and format the pages.
4. The most important part of completing my project will be meeting with you once I have
completed the above tasks to make sure I am on the right track and to ask any questions
that I may have developed along the way.
5. After meeting with you, I will then complete my progress report and make any changes to
my website, proofread each page, and make sure they open correctly and flow smoothly.
6. Last but not least, I will submit my final project by publishing my website and sending
you a link for it so you may view it. Also, I will write and submit a reflection memo on
this project.
Below is a timeline I have completed showing each task and when I plan to complete it.

The timeline below shows when I plan to complete each task mentioned in the above methods
section. The tasks are listed on the left and the time in which I plan to complete each task is
listed on the right. I have colored the corresponding box to denote when each task will be
completed.

Included below, I have included a grading rubric that I feel reflects my project and takes into
account the important elements of my project. I have divided the grading rubric into the overall
presentation and content, the writing component of my project, the visual and technological
portion, along with the editing and proofreading section. When you grade my project, I would
like you to pay particular attention to who the audience is. Since I will eliminate bias and my
opinions from my project, I want to make sure that my website applies to all types of people of
all ages- not just a certain gender or certain age.
____ (35-40) Five pages are included in the webpage for viewing; the information included on
each page is appropriate for the heading provided; the heading is clear, concise, and to the point;
formatting of each page contributes to the overall effectiveness and understandability of the
webpage; the images on each page relate to the information provided and give the reader a sense
of understanding and hope; each page sticks out and catches the reader¶s attention; it is
noticeable that a lot of thought and effort were put into designing the website and making sure it
is understandable for readers.
____ (30-34) Only 4 pages are accessible and the information provided doesn¶t fit the headings;
the headings are in too much detail and not straight to the point; the formatting on the pages loses
the attention of the reader but each page still contains adequate information; each page doesn¶t
catch the reader¶s attention but is still appropriate.
____ (24-29) Less than 4 pages are accessible for viewing and the information does not relate to
the heading on each page; there is missing information and the graphics do not complement the
overall appearance of the page; formatting is not appropriate and doesn¶t fit the layout of the
information; each page is dull and doesn¶t contribute to the layout or information provided; there
is evidence of a lack of planning and organization for the website
!
____ (20-25 pts.) The information included is appropriate for the targeted audience of domestic
violence victims, readers inquiring facts about domestic violence, and readers wanting to offer
guidance to victims; personal opinions and bias information are left out; the tone is appropriate
for the target audience; and the information included is helpful and useful for all types of readers.
____ (16-19) The information included doesn¶t seem to apply to the targeted audience but is
useful information for the general public; the tone seems a bit unprofessional and not directed
towards the correct target audience.
____ (15) The information included on the webpage does not meet expectations of what a
domestic violence website should contain and falls short of the expectations of what the targeted
audience is looking for on a domestic violence website; information provided may stray victims
away from the website thinking that this website does not offer them help.
J
!
____ (20-25) The design, layout, graphics, and formatting allow the reader to easily understand
the information provided; the appearance of each page is something a website viewer is
expecting from a website; each element included on each page is appropriate and contributes to
the overall effectiveness of the website.
____ (16-19) The design of the website looks a little too cluttered or includes a lot of ³white
space´ where information could have been provided but yet the layout, graphics, and information
on each page are all valuable elements; a little enhancement of each page could be used to make
the website more appealing to viewers.
____ (15) The design, layout, and graphics of each page make it hard to understand the
information provided and distracts the reader; there is more need for planning the layout of each
page and how the information should be presented
____ (8-10) 0-3 spelling, grammar, punctuation, or other proofreading errors; the colors used for
headings, backgrounds, and text enhance the appearance of each page
____ (5-7) 4-6 spelling, grammar, punctuation, or other proofreading errors; different colors for
headings could have been used as they may not be appropriate or take away from the information
provided.
____ (4) more than 6 spelling, grammar, punctuation, or other proofreading errors; there is
evidence of poor thought for colors, headings, background images, etc.
