CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The use of social media today is relevantly high because most of us use it every

day. It allows us to communicate to the other students and it allows us to share our

thoughts. Social media has broad ways of usage such as promoting a product, posting

memes, to promote business, and there are those who use it to update, because of the

excessive use of social media the user might not realize that their information is leaking

and it can lead to identity theft where someone use your identity to fool others by

pretending to be someone.

In the body of literature on personal privacy, the concept was analyzed and related

interchangeably with terms such as privacy concerns, and privacy attitudes and beliefs

(Smith et al, 2011). Other scholars have analyzed the construct of privacy in other

different ways, for example, the perceived importance of personal privacy to people

(Hossain and Prybutol, 2008) and the perceived privacy risk and protection belief (Li et

al, 2010).

October 3rd, 2012, Washington Posted a published article about strengthening

Children’s Privacy Law and the reaction of search engine providers on that initiative. It

discussed that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) plans to update and strengthen

Children Online Privacy Protection law, Act of 1998, as it was passed prior to the wide-

spread of smart phones owning and social media network sites introduction Twitter,

Facebook, Google+, Instagram and other make access convenient for Internet users.

When users click the “log in” button, those social media networks track and store their

actions.

People tend to socialize, share information, posting news and pictures on the

Internet. The students (specially 15-18 years old) is the most likely gives more time in

using social media because they posting their life events, exchanging information, open

malicious website and not knowing that there is a leak on their privacy than can lead to a

high risk for identity theft and cyber-attacks. We need to find out how posting, sharing

information can affects the privacy of a student in the social media platforms and how to

avoid leaked information.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Online privacy issues became more significance. Students (specially 15-18 years

old) are motivated to socialize and communicate, many of them express their identities to

present themselves and make a good impression. They provide their personal information

through several online activities for example: providing their names, address, cellphone

numbers, and other information when creating or log-in on the internet. Further, some

online activities which request to collect personal information from them. Soo the more

information you give the more risk of privacy.

 Who is viewing people’s profiles, photos and personal information?


 Why some students choose other people whom they wish to have access to

the self or to one’s group?

 What do they feel knowing that their personal information is being shared

with other businesses?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is limited only to the students of Las Piñas City Technical-Vocational

High School students, ages 15-18 years old, who have a social media account(s) from

school year (2020-2021).

The study will examine the students who use social media, like Facebook,

Instagram, or Twitter and how can affect the privacy of the respondent.
