WHAT IS ETHICS

The words ethics has emerged from Latin “Ethicus” or in Greek word “Ethicos” .The origin of these two
words is form “Ethos” which means “Custom”, “habit”, and “way of living”.
So, the discipline and practice of applying value to human behavior, resulting in meaningful conduct.

OR
The value of what should be done and what should not be done from the business point of view.

the code of moral principles and values that govern the behaviors of a person or group with respect to what
is right or wrong.

As per Oxford Dictionary the meaning of the ethics is a “system of moral principle, rules and conduct”.

While the moral is derived from Latin word “Moralis” which means “Character”. This word is used in
many times in place of ethics by mistake but these two words are different.

• Ethics: A system of moral principles.

• Morals: Have to do with right and wrong behavior. (Our principles and values governing right and
wrong behavior.)

LAW versus ETHICS

To better understand ethics let us understand and contrast the definition of law and ethics …
Law is a consistent set of universal rules that are :
 widely published,
 Generally accepted and
 Usually enforced.
These rules describe the ways in which people are required to act in society.
Ethics defines:
 what is good for the individual and for society and
 establishes the nature of duties that people owe to
 oneself and
 others in society

PURPOSE OF ETHICS
 Ethics are the guiding principles.
 Where the proposed business activity/ operation of the company borders on the unknown, the
company needs to apply the ethics principle to decide on the project.
 Ethics help make relationships mutually pleasant and productive- imbibes a sense of community
among members- a sense of belongingness to society.

GOLDEN RULES OF ETHICS

The following are the forms of the golden rule in ethics. Each of these forms the basis of all human values.
These are the core values to change one first.
1. Everything you want others to do to you, you shall do to others.
2. Do not do to others that which you do not wish them to do to you.

Department of Business Administration Gomal University D.I.KHAN 6

3. Do not do anything to others that if done to you, would cause harm to you.

GOLDEN RULES OF MORALS

1. Don’t kill.
2. Don’t cause pain.
3. Don’t deprive of freedom.
4. Don’t deprive of pleasure.
5. Don’t deceive.
6. Keep your promise.
7. Don’t cheat.
8. Obey the law.
9. Do your duty.

SOURCES OF ETHICS

The ethics of the country or society in which the organization exists are important determinants of its ethical
values.
 Societal ethics are the moral values formalized in a society’s legal system, in its customs and
practices and in the unwritten norms and values that its people follow in their daily lives.
 Professional ethics are the moral values that a group of similarly trained people develop to control
their performance of a task or use their resources. People internalize the values and norms of their
professions just as they do the values and norms of their societies. They follow these norms when
deciding how to behave.

Department of Business Administration Gomal University D.I.KHAN 7

 Individual ethics are the personal values that people use to structure interactions with other people.
In many instances, personal ethics mirror societal ethics and originate in the law. Personal ethics are
also the result of an individual’s upbringing. Because personal ethics influence how a person will act
in an organization, an organization’s culture is strongly affected by the people who are in a position
to establish its ethical values.

DEFINITION OF VALUES

 A broad definition of values, derived from an insight into ancient India’s psycho philosophical wisdom
literature is:
“Values are states of feelings/emotions that underpin the content of a choice/ decision and
determine the manner of using the intellect/ reason for justifying and implementing that
choice/decision.”
 Character is the foundation of values.

HOW THE ETHICS & VALUE ARE DILUTED

 Way of creating a greed, thirst, lust

 Way of creating trust
 Politeness with rational
 System and procedures
 Transparency
 Commitment quick
 Disposal
 Cash
 Loans
 Bank guarantee

TYPES OF VALUES

There are two kinds of values: terminal and instrumental.

A. A terminal value is a desired end state or outcome that people seek to achieve.
B. An instrumental value is a desired mode or type of behavior. Examples are provided on the next
slide.

An organization’s culture consists of the end states that the organization seeks to achieve (its terminal
values) and the modes of behavior the organization encourages (its instrumental values). Ideally,
instrumental values help the organization achieve its terminal values.

Department of Business Administration Gomal University D.I.KHAN 9

This slide illustrates how an organization’s terminal and instrumental values ultimately lead to the
development of specific norms, rules, and standard operating procedures that support the culture of the
organization. These norms, rules, and SOPs encourage members of the organization to adopt certain
terminal and instrumental values and behave in certain ways.
Norms are largely informal so many of the most crucial values an organization has are not written down.

CONCLUSION

Ethics is a set of moral values and principles related to society. The application of ethical principles
contributes to the attainment of financial moral. The domination of ethical principles implies the elimination
of criminal operation of commercial banks, i.e. less frauds, bribery, and corruption. Given that economy
cannot successfully function in the absence of ethics and morals, the necessity of introducing ethical code is
frequently advocated.
In the banking sector, the business ethics principles would be implemented in an organized fashion, aided
by normative and legal regulation in the field of bankers' business activities. The application of the code of
ethical principles would establish a defensive mechanism in the area of application of ethical values since
the position of a particular profession requires more stringent moral standards and involves sanctions for the
breach of the same. In developed countries, the issue of ethics is closely attended to.
The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other institutions are trying to shape the environment
of international commercial and financial relations by developing standards and codes in the field of
economic policy.
In each profession there is an ethical – moral code of behaviour. Such moral norms are established and
applied in order to govern internal relations and the relations with other groups.
The adoption of ethical standards in the form of a code of appropriate conduct could contribute to
understanding broader community. To that end, it is necessary to do the following:

 Ethical standards should be formalized in regulations. The law and other regulations may provide a
framework for advisory, reprimanding measures and other restrictions.

 Professional ethics-related advice contributes to moral reasoning. An unbiased advice alone can
contribute to the resolution of ethical dilemmas.

Department of Business Administration Gomal University D.I.KHAN 10

 An adequate responsibility mechanism should be established. In case of a violation of ethical
principles, a formal chain of responsibility should be established. There should be clear rules and
procedures to be followed by the officers.

 Bank managers should serve as role models for ethical behaviour and professionalism.
Consequently, they have a leading role since they promote ethical behaviour. Policy and practice
pursued by managers should underscore bank's commitment to ethical principles.

 Central Bank seeks to maintain high standards of service and ethics enabling it to be perceived as
impartial, ethical and independent. In addition to the general guidelines, the following are the salient
features of the Bank’s code of ethics and conduct.
