Objectives

• Describe how a hierarchical network supports the voice, video and

data needs of a small and medium-sized business.
• Match the appropriate Cisco switch to each layer in the
hierarchical network design model.
• ACCESS LAYER

User to network
end devices
• DISTRIBUTION LAYER

Controls the flow of data

policies/ACL’s
broadcastcontainment
inter VLAN routing
• CORE LAYER

Connects to Internet
internetwork (sites)
high speed backbone transport
redundant links
• Network diameter
• How many Switches between 2 endpoints in the network
NOT IMPORTANT in hiërarchical design (distribution layer seperates
broadcastdomains)
• Bandwidth aggregation (=etherchannel)
– Dual physical links become 1 logical link between switches to increase
bandwidth on a link !!
• Redundant links (not at access layer becaus of cost)
– Several links between the different layer switches
• Bandwidth aggregation (=etherchannel)
• Trunking
• Stacking

• How to improve performance?

• Describe the role of a converged network in supporting small and
medium-sized (SMB) business voice, video, and data needs

Voordelen: 1 netwerk beheren, minder bekabeling

evolutie naar all in one: soft phone (no extra power needed from the switch
PoE)
Nadelen: QoS en priorization of voice. Configuration is not easy !
Match the Appropriate Cisco Switch to each Layer in
the Hierarchical Network Design Model
• Bandwidth requirements for each layer
Traffic flow analysis tools
• User communities analysis (groupings of users according to
functions and there impact on network performance).
Port density / modular or
stackable access layer
switches
Location of servers!
Workgroup servers
Enterprise servers
(small network diameter)
Aggregate links to achieve bandwidth

• Client server traffic

• Server server traffic
Stackwise
max 9
daisy chain
1 backplane=faster than connecting
through switchports
Switch specifications

• 1U (rack units): form factors

• PoE : power over ethernet (for AP, IPphones)
• Forwarding rate: how much data the switch can process / second
• Wire speed: theoretical max data rate of each port (limited by end
device / cable)
• Port density: number of ports on 1 switch
• Etherchannel: link aggregation (1 logical link)
L3 versus multilayer switches

• Layer 3 functions
Match the Appropriate Cisco Switch to each Layer in
the Hierarchical Network Design Model
• Identify the Cisco switches used in SMB applications
Summary

• Hierarchical Design model addresses performance, scalability,

maintainability & manageability issues.
• Traffic Analysis is used to monitor network performance.
• Hierarchical Design Model is composed of 3 layers:
• Access
• Distribution
• Core
• Switches selected for each layer must meet the needs of each
hierarchical layer as well as the needs of the business.
Questions

• Rollen van elke layer

• Welke ander layered model ken jullie
• Verschil logical design and physical design
• Waarom is elk van de goals van network design zo belangrijk, welke
voordelen geeft dit?
• Welke switch zouden jullie in bepaalde situaties gebruiken?
