Quick Intro
-Developed in 15th century near Punjab, India

-Branched from Hinduism because of disagreement with the caste system

-Guru Granth Sahib

-Gurdwara (Doorway to God)

-Five Ks

● Kesh, or unshorn long hair, which is protected by a dastaar, or turban.


● A kangha is a small wooden comb meant to keep the hair combed twice a day.
● A kara is an iron bangle to be worn on the hand used most.
● A kachera is a specific undergarment for men and women.
● A kirpan is a short dagger.
Basic Beliefs

● Sikhism is a monotheistic religion, and the basic Sikh belief is represented in the phrase
Ik Onkar meaning “One God.”
● Sikhism teaches equality of all people
● Sikhism emphasizes daily devotion to the remembrance of God. One should
remember God at all times.
● Sikhism teaches religious freedom. All people have the right to follow their own path
to God without condemnation or coercion from others.
● Sikhism rejects all forms of rituals such as idol worship, pilgrimages, fasting, and
superstitions.
● Sikhs are supposed to be saints, scholars, and soldiers.
Rite of Sikhism
Amrit (Baptism)-

-The ceremony is done in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib.

-Performed by 5 baptised Sikhs

Anand Karaj (Marriage)-

-Means Blissful Union

-The ceremony is done in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib.

-Sikhs practice monogamy, however widows may remarry
