LIVING IN THE IT ERA

Science, culture and ethics of information technology, its influence on modern living and
human relationships and uses for personal, professional and social advancement.

Information technology is the application of computers and telecommunication

technology to obtain, store, retrieve and transmit data, in the form of voice, picture or text
or often in the content of a business or other enterprise.
 IT can do atleast 3 things:
 It can process raw data into useful information
 It can recycle processed information & use it as data in another processing step.
 It can pack information in a new forms so its easier to understand, more attractive or
more useful.

Science is creating wonders almost every day. What was once sheer fantasy is now almost a
reality by virtue of the recent achievements of men of science. Almost everything that makes eases
our daily life are the wonders of modern science. Science has conferred many gifts on modern life.
Indeed, they are far too many to be counted.

 Computers: Computers is widely used by common people for recording their day-to-day
transactions. It is also used in controlling and processing the activities of factories and plants.

 Medical Science: Scientists have invented so many wonder drugs. The effects of these drugs
are so miraculous. By means of these drugs, fatal diseases could be controlled. Many deadly
diseases can be cured by the application of medicine in proper time.

Human heart-transplantation is a significant achievement in the field of surgery. In fact,

transplantation of human organs is quite possible now to save the lives of men.

 Radio: We listen to news and songs through our radio sets.

 Television: Television has become a medium of the audio-visual method of learning. It
remains one of the most significant contribution of science to the society.

 Travelling: We use buses, trams, motor cars, trains and airplanes to travel from one place to
another. Science has narrowed the vast distance of the world.

 Comfort during summer days:Electronic fans and air-conditioners gives us comfort

during summer days.

 Mobile Phones: We cannot think of living without our mobile phones. Apart from talking to
a distant friend, we can browse internet on our smartphones.

 Camera: When we go out on holidays, we can take photographs through a camera.

 Power and Electricity: Adequate Power (Electricity) is a necessity for every one of us. Most
of our everyday works are dependent upon electricity. The thermal, hydro and gas power
plants are important mediums that allow uninterrupted supply of electricity to common
people.

 Nuclear energy: Nuclear energy is being harnessed by modern science to peaceful purposes
to achieve many more wonders in life. Thus, atom is energy is producing electrical power and
the radioactive isotopes and tracers are doing marvels in the fields of agriculture and industry.

 Tracking calories in foods and drinks – If you’re watching your figure, or if you’re
looking to improve your physique, tracking and monitoring your daily calorie consumption is
a great way of ensuring you remain in a calorie deficit, which will then result in weight loss or
maintenance. Whether you are tracking them manually, using an app or piece of software, the
only reason you are able to know exactly how many calories are in each food and drink item
you consume, is again due to science. A calorie is a unit measurement of energy, and
manufacturers work out how much each item contains using a complex chemistry process, as
they have determined that a calorie is the exact amount of energy needed to increase the
temperature of 1 kg of water by a single degree

 Composting – If we want to grow healthy trees and plants in our garden, we often use
fertilizers made from home-made compost heaps, as broken down vegetation and certain food
items result in potent nutrients that plants and greenery in general absolutely thrive upon.
When we have some old vegetables that are past their best, if we have a compost heap, we
throw them on and let them decompose. Decomposition is part of the wonderful world of
science, as we now understand that by letting certain ingredients turn rotten and decompose,
that the process can actually be beneficial for our gardens.

Science and technology makes our lives simpler. Works can be done easier through
high- tech machines and equipment. It gives less work for humans and our job can be done
faster. It makes us feel comfortable and easy to live. It also helps us organize our daily
activities.

Science and technology is not giving us only the positive side but it also has its
disadvantages that truly affect human life.

Modern technology is simply an advancement of old technology. The impact of

technology in modern life is unmeasurable, we use technology in different ways and
sometimes the way we implement various technologies do more damage than good.
ADVANTAGES OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY

 Easy Access To Information

It has become pretty easy to get access to relevant information at anytime and anywhere. This
has been possible because of modern technologies like broadband internet. Lots of data is being
published and indexed online, sites like Wikipedia and Youtube have great original content that is
regularly used for research or entertainment. With smart gadgets like the iPad, iPhone, Galaxy
tablets, etc., users can easily have access to a vast amount of information wherever they are
through the use of the internet on these devices
 Encourages Innovation And Creativity
Since technology seems infinite, it sparks the brain to work to its full potential. In the past, it
used to be very difficult to start a business, one had to have lots of capital, and they even had
limited access to business information. Today, it is simple to start a business while at home. Let’s
look at companies like Etsy.com which enable creative people to sell their works online; this
encourages creativity. The other creative works which have been facilitated by modern
technology include Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, etc.
 Improved Communication
Modern technology has blessed us with advanced communication technology tools. These
include e-fax, electronic mail, mobile phones, video conferencing, instant text messaging
applications, social networking, etc.. All these modern communication technology tools have
simplified the way humans and businesses communicate. We can quickly talk to my relative
overseas using a mobile phone or video chatting services like Skype.

 The Convenience of Traveling/ Ease Of Mobility

Modern transportation technology makes it very easy to travel long distances. Transport is a
very important both in our lives and in the business world. Transportation technology has evolved
with years. In the past, it used to be slow and expensive to move long distances. Nowadays, we can
cover a 10 miles distance within a few minutes using electric trains, airplanes or cars.

 Improved Housing And Lifestyle

New architectural technology has improved the kinds of home we build. People with money
can afford floating homes, and glass homes or people with smaller means can make tiny houses or
mobile homes. Most of the items in our houses are now automated, for example, doors use
fingerprints, key cards, or Bluetooth on our mobile. Security has also increased at home with the
evolution of more robust integrated security system.
 Improved Entertainment

Modern technology has played a significant role in changing the entertainment

industry. Home entertainment has improved with the invention of video games, advance music
systems and visual systems like smart televisions, which can connect live to the internet so that a
user can share what they’re watching with friends. Easy access and storage of music are ever
present, services like iTunes allow users to purchase and download music on their players at a
small cost, this is a win-win situation for both musicians and the users. Additionally, bars, clubs,
and amusement parks have all benefited from advancements in technology. We can see things in
3D, ride the highest roller coaster or be served by a robot at the bar, all possible through modern
technology.
 Efficiency And Productivity
Modern technology has helped businesses increase production. Humans are slow, and
sometimes they fail to deliver on time and quality. Many companies have integrated modern
technology in their production line, increasing output and allowing for more consistent quality.

 Convenience In Education

Learning is a process, and it is part of our daily lives. Modern technology has made it simple
for students to learn from anywhere through online education and mobile education. Also, students
now use modern technology in classrooms to learn more effectively. For example, students use
tablets to share visual lessons and examples with peers in the classroom; this has made learning
more convenient and fun. Also, new modern educational technologies support individual learning
which gives students a chance to learn on their own with no need for tutors.

 Social Networking

Modern technology has made it simple to discover our old friends and also discover new
people to network with; this is a benefit to both individuals and businesses. Many businesses have
embraced social networking technology to interact with their customers. Users of social networks
can share information with friends, live chat with them and interact in all sorts of ways.

 Benefits To The Health Industry

Today most hospitals have implemented modern technology in surgical rooms, and this has
reduced mistakes made by doctors. Humans can easily make mistakes because of work overload and
stress factors. Additionally, the development community has developed health apps that enable us
to monitor our health, weight or fitness. These applications are used on mobile phones, so users
have access anytime.
DISADVANTAGES OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY

 Increased Loneliness

Social Isolation is on the increase, people are spending more time playing video games,
learning how to use new modern technologies, using social networks and they neglect their real life.
Technology has replaced our old way of interacting. If a user can easily interact with 100 friends
online, they will feel no need to go out to make new friends which at a later stage can lead
to loneliness.

 Job Loss

Modern technology has replaced many human jobs; robots are doing the jobs which used to be
done by humans. Many packing firms have employed robots on production lines to increase
production and efficiency, this is good news for businesses because it helps them make more money
and serve customers, but it is bad news for employees because they may become redundant.

 Competency

Increased dependency on modern tools like calculators and spell checkers has reduced
our creativity and intelligence. Many today struggle with spelling even basic words without an
editor to confirm every word. Others find it impossible to do basic math without a calculator.
Though these tools assist to make us more efficient, we may become excessively reliant on them.

 Security

Thankfully advances in technology have aided security, however, due to these advances,
everything is connected to the internet in some way. Our financial accounts, our photos, our cars,
mobile phone, everything touches the internet at some time. Due to the network of worldwide
devices and systems, many have fallen prey to an identity thief, hacked accounts by some
mischievous hacker.
 World Destruction/Advanced Weapons
Modern technology has been the main aid in the increasing of endless wars. It aids the
manufacturing of modern war weapons. So when these weapons get into the hands of criminals,
they will use them for their selfish reasons. To add, these weapons often severely damage the
natural earth, making some areas uninhabitable.
Modern lifestyle is the human daily work and their use on the products that they eat
or live with them and anything that made them feel comfortable by using them. The
lifestyle of the humans are based on the location they live and their growth.
The modern lifestyle is an impact on one’s way of life, attitude, values and the
knowledge on the world. One’s lifestyle can be easily determined by other person by seeing
his dressing, way of talking and more. Every individual has unique lifestyle.
ADVANTAGES OF MODERN LIFESTYLE
 The humans use modern machine for their work to be done immediately to save time and
energy.
 Way of living change by the time when the people think it is the perfect way to live.
 Eating habits and way of talking change. People choose the perfect way of speaking and learn
to use new languages.
 Modern Lifestyle makes the people feel less stress, it is getting tough to burn calories in body
by doing work with their body. They instead use machines to reduce the stress.
 In the modern life, education has more developed with the use of internet.

DISADVANTAGES OF MODERN LIFESTYLE

 While entering into the darker side, due to modern life style , the culture and tradition is
fading off.
 The people are addicted to the new technology and new behavior which may cause to loss
there humanity of living. Modern lifestyle is good but it is about certain level. Humans should
check that modern lifestyle should not let the humans down.
 It is not reaching to some rural areas, in which people who live in rural areas are backward
than people in urban areas.
 Materials and machines are getting expensive.
 The most serious one is the increasingly polluted environment; air is filled with smog and
water dis contaminated by chemicals from factories.
 Personalization of human relationships which mostly result from people’s ever-increasing
contact with machines and numbers.
 Weakening of spiritual values. An undeniable fact is that a large number of people are solely
interested in materialistic culture, while neglecting spiritual civilization.
 Cyber-Sickness. With the increased addiction to social networks and internet games, people
are spending more time on computers and reject their normal offline life, resulting in
increased isolation and social imbalance.
 Internet Security Issue. For the merchant to process an order online, a consumer has to
provide their financial details. Experienced hackers can use this loophole to channel this
information and use it for their own needs. Use PayPal!

Ethics of Information
Ethics of Information is concern itself with people’s good or responsible conduct in and
with technology as well as with complying with the legitimate motives, sound values and
norms that hold for technology and its use.
What are the criteria for good and responsible human actions? Where does technology
fit in when it comes to nature and culture? Which norms and whose values hold here?
Responses to these kinds of questions ground one’s ethics. Differences in this regard make the
task of ethics all the more arduous because there is no longer a unity of vision about
humanity, history, the meaning of technology, culture and the future. Differences in these
matters have to do with one’s philosophical orientation and the different convictions about life
and the world in which these are rooted.

Ethical Issues Involved in Using Technology

Once we begin automating, what are our ethical obligations? New ethical issues requiring new
standards of care are constantly arising as a result of the technology changeover. Losing client data
or allowing client confidences to be accessible by unauthorized individuals are a few of the ethical
issues that must be addressed. Always check the latest ethics opinions. Many office computer
disasters and possible ethical violations can be avoided if certain precautions are taken. The
following is a short list of the increased scrutiny the legal profession will be expected to address as
the technology revolution continues.
 Prevent unauthorized users from using your desktop;
 Ensure passwords are locked up and unusual in origin;
 Back up your system and have a disaster recovery plan;
 Diligently use anti-virus software, even on manufacturer’s disks;
 Have two or more people familiar with your computer system, preferably one being an outside
consultant;
 Select an outside consultant who maintains confidences;
 Surge protectors and temporary power suppliers should be installed and checked on a routine
basis;
 Decide who gets access to information and provide consequences for unauthorized access or
attempt to access;
 Preclude access to key areas of the computer operating system;
 Immediately determine the risks of disgruntled employees and act accordingly;
 Use anti-virus software on e-mail that has an attachment;
 Learn how the paralegal and secretary use their computers and where certain case computer
files are located; and
 Keep kids and others away from your computer at home or at work.

INFLUENCES OF IT ERA TO HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

With every new technological advancement there comes a wave of distrust. When
phones became widely available, many were concerned that this will limit people’s face to face
interaction. When instant messaging became popular, many feared we would soon lose our
social skills.
Human beings continue to evolve, and even though change can be scary, we need to
adapt. And we need to look at these changes in an objective, level-headed manner and see
what they mean for the future of human interactions.

 The Human Element Is More Important Than Ever

In spite of the fact that social media does limit our direct contact, this makes the human
element all the more important. A keens sense of human psychology is essential since you cannot
rely on the conventional tells to figure out what a person actually wants to say.
 People Expect Full Transparency
Transparency has always been a vital component in the relationship between brands and
customers. And obviously the more transparent you were towards your customers, the easier it
was to build a loyal customer base.
 Building Trust Requires a Lot More Effort
Back in the days before the internet became such an integral part of our lives, a solid brand
name and a good line of products or services were enough to build customers’ trust.

But nowadays people have a wide variety of options to choose from. And they have access to
information like never before. Simply putting out good products at a fair price is not enough.
Customers need a little bit more convincing to before they will decide to invest their trust in your
brand.
 Human Interactions Are Becoming Much More Dynamic
Everything on the internet happens at a much faster pace than the one we are used to. A new story
can reach the entire world in a matter of minutes. You can have a pleasant conversation about the
weather with people living on the other side of the globe.
