the existing foundation. In addition to pro-
viding west window shading, the scree n wall
serves also as a major design element.
Brick from t he foundation also provided a
scr een wall enclosing a small cou rt off the fu-
hire confer ence room. This wall helps screen
the existing house from view. Wi t h the addi-
tion of a small canopy at the entrance the
ex isting roof was kept intl1ct. Decorative
panels were suspended to disguise the existing
pOl"ch ceiling.
Cost of the project was approximately
$3,000.00 with much of the actual \Vo l'k being

MOVES TO 777 THIRD AVE.
New 38·Story Skyscraper
Will Be Called
United States Plywood Building
38·STO RY SKY SCRA I'EIt now under cOll s lru c ti o n
A at 777 Third Avenue will be the new head·
quarters for United Siaies Plywood Co rporation,
S. W. Antoville. chai rman of the board, announced .
The new building will be named the Uni ted States
Plywood Building.
The compan )', which man ufactures a wide range
o f building materials under the Weld wood trade-
mark, will lease fi ve /lOO f S in the build ing with a
lotal floor space of more than 100,000 square feet
plus a substantial ground fl oor display space a l the
northwest corner o f the building al Third thenue
and 49th Street
Architect William Lescaze, F.A.I.A. has incor·
porated a number of design inllovations in the
building ill line .with the new zoning resolutions
approved by the City of New York in December,
1961. The building rises 38 fl oors with II single
setback placed above the 12th fl oor to house the
building's mechanical equipment. A terraced fl oor
emphasizes this setback.
A 12,OOO.squarc-fool open plaza, also made pos-
sible by the new zoning code, surrounds the build-
ing. Skin for the building is anod ized alum inum
combined with g rey.ti nted glass.
Mr. Lescaze-s design played a maj or role in the
compan y's move, according to Mr. Antoville who
led a fi ve-year sea rch for a new headquarters.
"The new U.S. Plywood Building, in the design
and architecture center o f the city, will be a struc·
lu re wilh the architectural prestige we were looking
fo r to rep resent our company," sa id Mr. Antoville.
" The building, moreover, allows ample space J or
expansion as our business increases."
U.S. Plywood has owned a headquarters building
at 55 West 44th "Street since 1945 and now occupies
additional space in two neighboring buildings. The
company, o rganized in 191 9, o riginall y was located
in lower Man hauan where it occupied a total of
2,500 square feet.
