One of life’s greatest certainties is change. We sometimes hear it expressed this way: “The only thing constant in life
is change.” That is true. Nothing stays the same, at least not for very long. Some changes are quite nice. Later this
month, for instance, we will see a change on the calendar from winter to spring. I, for one, think that as a pretty nice
change.

Another way of expressing the reality of change in our lives is that we undergo periods of transition. Some of them,
again, are quite nice. We graduate from school. We begin our careers. We get married. We have children. Other
periods of transition are not so pleasant. That marriage we entered with such excitement and hope turns out to be
more curse than blessing, and we transition into a life after divorce. People we love die. Our children move away,
begin lives of their own, and we might feel as if we’ve lost them. We age. Our youthful healthiness becomes
something else. At some point we might simply want to say, “Alright, enough! No more change, please!”

Those periods of transition are simply part of the fabric of our lives. We cannot stop them. If we are going to be
emotionally healthy people we cannot demand something from life which life cannot deliver - that is, a changeless
state. Changes will continue, we will undergo transitions. As long as we live we will enter new and different stages.
Again, if we are going to be healthy all we can do is be prepared for the changes which will definitely come in our
lives, accept them and adapt to them when they come.

People of faith have another resource when it comes to changes and periods of transition. That resource is the
assurance that we are not alone when the difficult changes come. God is with us. The apostle Paul wrote,

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

That is the great blessing of faith - knowing that when the difficult times come, we are not alone. We are supported
by the loving arms of God.

Wherever you are in the journey of life, hang in there. You are not alone.

Mark
