Environmental Studies 200: Reflection on Climate Action Week

During climate action week I participated in the walk out that was on Friday at 11am.
Students walked out of class and went downtown and protested in front of the parliament. I
witnessed many different protesters views, those who rallied against the pipeline as well as
individuals who were concerned about the lives of whales and the general idea of our overall
current negative impact on the environment. Being from Calgary the idea of the pipeline is
generally praised upon and the economic benefits of it are huge for our province. However, I
always knew the environmental impacts and how many individuals were on the other side of
the argument. I learnt from many protesters the impacts it will have on the environment that is
being ripped apart to install this pipeline. Not only will it leave some forests in shambles but for
an indefinite period of time our land will have harmful substances and chemicals running
through it. With these projects there are no promises of the product not spilling and leaching
the soil it surrounds. The environmental impacts of this project are immense and while there
are economic benefits, the environment should be our first concern.

Many individuals came with signs with slogans and short sayings that represented their
anger and urgency for a change in how we treat our environment. I had conversations with
many individuals that talked about climate change and its impact such as rising sea levels and
droughts throughout the world. At the center of an intersection a group of individuals created a
mural on the street with paint. It had a slogan along the lines of “we only have 11 years left to
make a change”. As many different theories have been created of when the earth is going to
experience a detrimental event that ends all life, individuals are now saying we have 11 years
before our planet reaches its end. The mural was to make a statement and make sure that
every individual that sees it understands that the decisions we make effect our environment
and eventually if we continue with our same habits our earth will not be able to sustain life.
Much like we learnt in class our eating habits have an effect on the planet, the manufacturing
of products we use. Everything we chose to use and consume and surround ourselves with in
our day effects the health of our planet. Individuals are so concerned about easy access to
products and areas around them that they forget the impacts on the environment.

My overall experience at the climate action protest was incredible. Being able to
interact with so many inspiring and determined individuals was very eye opening. In Calgary,
many individuals were passionate about environmental change however I had never seen a
group as determined and inspiring as the residences of Victoria. The quantity of people that
came out to support climate action week filled the streets, the grass out front of the parliament
was covered with individuals protesting. So many different ways of sending a message were
used such as music, art, costumes and posters. It got me thinking about how I impact the
environment and what I can change to truly change my footprint on the world. I want to have a
deeper understanding of how transportation and manufacturing of products I use effects the
environment and if there are brands out there that truly put their best effort into conserving
the environment. After participating in climate action week, I wish to make an impact on the
decisions made in our country. I want to start doing research on political figures and who truly
have our best interest in mind. Being political leaders who get to make decisions for provinces,
or the country they should understand the impact of decisions made not only on society but
our environment. Climate action week brought me a deeper understanding of the impacts our
decisions make and how difficult it is for individuals voices to be heard in our society today.
