Digital Identity: Impact of Artificial Intelligence.
INTRODUCTION
Emergence of certain Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations threatens not just one's digital
footprint but one's digital identity and daily life off the cable.
Digital identity is the internet or online counterpart of the actual identity of an individual or
entity (Government or business organization) when utilized for electronic transactions from
smartphones, computers or other devices capable of online transactions.
It includes one’s digital footprint. Digital footprint is a data trail created while an individual uses
the internet. This comprises of visited sites, emails sent, personal information submitted to
internet services.
FOCUS
We find ourselves in an explosive information age where we literally fail to grasp the gravity of
the situation regarding data privacy.
Deepfake impact of Digital Identity: It is without a doubt that Peter Cashmere's quote which says
"Privacy is dead and social media holds the smoking gun", is true.
To that end, one could as well add that social media is Deepfake's benefactor.
Deepfake, the portmanteau of deep learning and fake is the synthesis of human image with
artificial intelligence. Deepfake redefines digital identity by making fake videos or recordings
sound real.
With these capabilities, Deepfake have been used to create fake celebrity pornographic videos,
fake news and malicious hoaxes.
FINDINGS
Trump Deepfake
A video surfaced on the internet of Donald Trump offering advice on the issue of climate change
Belgians. “As you know, I had the balls to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement,” he said,
staring at the camera, “and so should you.”
The video was created by a Belgian political party, Socialistische Partij Anders, or sp.a, and
posted on sp.a’s social media accounts. It provoked hundreds of comments, many expressing
outrage that the American president would dare weigh in on Belgium’s climate policy.
Defamation of Character
Another big concern of Deepfake includes fake pornography or revenge porn. An example
includes the Ill-conceived website Deepnudes, where celebrity faces and the faces of ordinary
women could be superimposed on pornographic video content.
However, Deepnudes’ founder eventually canceled the site's launch, fearing “the probability that
people will misuse it is too high.” Well, what else would people do with fake pornography
content?
A lot of the fear about Deepfake rightfully concerns politics.
