1. Consider the circuit shown in Fig. 1. If the diode D1 has the D1

characteristic given by 𝑖 = [ 10−6𝑣𝐷; 𝑣𝐷 < 0.5 𝑉 vi vo
𝐷 ],
0.5 𝜇𝐴 + 0.01(𝑣 − 0.5); 𝑣 > 0.5 𝑉 R1
𝐷 𝐷
where iD is the current flowing through the diode when the voltage
across it is vD, then, (a) plot the voltage transfer characteristic of the 2V
circuit; (b) If vi = 3 V, determine vo; (c) If 𝑣𝑖 = 3 𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝜔𝑡); 𝑓 = Fig. 1

100 𝐻𝑧, plot the input and output voltage waveforms.

2. In the circuit of Fig. 2, the diode D1 can be considered to be ideal,

except for a cut-in voltage (Vγ) of 0.3 V. If VA = 2 V and the input vi vo
were 𝑣𝑖 = 3 𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝜔𝑡); 𝑓 = 100 𝐻𝑧, then, plot the input and output
waveforms. Clearly mark the cardinal points. D1

3. It is desired to obtain a dc power source of 5.6 V from a 230 V /

then passed through a bridge rectifier and a capacitor filter, to obtain
a voltage which varies from 6 V to 7 V. If the load to be connected is such that 0 < 𝑖𝐿 < 100 𝑚𝐴,
then design a shunt voltage regulator to provide a constant output of 5. 6 V, when the input voltage
and the load vary between the given limits. You are provided with 5.6 V / 1 mA / 1 W zener
diodes, which are required to be operated with a safety factor of 0.75.

4. All the diodes in the bridge rectifier of the circuit shown in Fig. 3, are
ideal, except for a cut-in voltage of 0.3 V. If R1 = R2 = 1 kΩ and the output
R1
𝑣𝑜 = 𝑉𝐴𝐵, (a) plot the Voltage Transfer Characteristic of the circuit, if 𝑣𝑖 D2
were the input; (ii) If 𝑣𝑖 = 2 𝑆𝑖𝑛 (𝜔𝑡); 𝑓 = 100 𝐻𝑧, then, plot the input vi
D1
R2
and output voltage waveforms; (iii) For the input of (ii), determine the A B
average value of the output.

Note: All the above questions are to be analysed and equations obtained for the required voltages or transfer
characteristics. These are to be verified by means of simulation and the results – both analysis and
simulation – are to be submitted using the template for assignments, including the honor pledge, by 2359hrs

“Periodical_20.1” and the file named as “xxxx_20.P1.pdf”, both without the quotes, where xxxx stands for
the last four digits of your roll number.
