INTRODUCTION

Traffic congestion occurs when vehicles travels slowly because there are too
many vehicles on the road. This makes trip time longer and increases the line
of vehicles. The researcher seeks to find out the causes of traffic congestion in
St. George Grenada.
AIM OF STUDY

What are the causes of traffic congestion in St .George

Grenada?
METHODOLOGY
How data was collected
The researcher collected data by field observation of study area. The
Researcher took photos of traffic congestion in St. George. Data was
alsocollected on the internet.

When data was collected

Data was collected November 12th, 2019 at 8am and November 20th at 5pm.

Where data was collected

Data was collected at the study area in St George’s and at the traffic
department in St Georges.
PRESENTATION OF DATA
The following are some of the causes of traffic congestion in
St Georges Grenada:

POTHOLES:
Though out Grenada there are many potholes on the road as
shown in photograph 1. These potholes may damage vehicles
as they pass causing them to move slowly. Drivers may swing
away from these potholes, further slowing the flow of traffic
and leading to traffic congestion in St. George.
ACCIDENTS:
In St.George traffic congestion is also caused by accidents.
When there are accidents on the road, a build-up of traffic
results. After the accident has occurred the police and other
emergency vehicles may appear on the scene and this usually
takes up a long period of time on the road. Road may be
block causing the flow of traffic to cease, leading to traffic
congestion as seen in photograph 2.

Year Number of accidents

2010 590
2012 541
2013 494
2014 528
2015 626
2016 684

SCHOOL ZONE:
In St. George there are many school zones on the main road.
Vehicles stopping to drop and pick they kids from school as
this hinders and slows down the flow of traffic. This causes
traffic congestion as shown in photograph4.
MALFUNCTION TRAFFIC LIGHTS:
Thoughout St. George many of the traffic lights are
malfunctioning. When this happens police officers may have
to direct traffic. These malfunctioning lights may cause the
traffic to move slowly leading to a build up and causing
congestion as shown in photograph5.
LAND SLIDE:
On the St. George road due to bad weather and heavy
rainfall, landslides occur and sometimes block the road.
When this happens the traffic can’t flow freely. Sometimes
accidents occur which further cause congestion as shown in
photograph 6.
RUSH HOUR:
In St. George one of the causes of traffic congestion is during
rush hour. When everyone gets on the road at the same time
traffic may build up the congestion occurs as seen in
photograph 7.
ILLEGAL VENDING:
In St. George there are many illegal vending on the side of
the road as seen in photograph 8. This makes it difficult for
vehicles to pass. This slows down the flow of traffic and
sometimes causes a one way traffic build up and congestion.
NARROW SIDE WALKS:
Throughout St. George these side walks are very narrow. As
such pedestrians may walk in the road as shown in
photograph 9 below. This obstruction can also cause
accidents and build-up of traffic.
FUNERALS:
Traffic congestion though out St. George can be caused by
funerals. Vehicles and persons slowly following behind the
procession as seen in photograph 9, may cause a build up in
traffic as vehicles may be unable to pass on both sides of the
road which leads to congestion.
ILLEGAL PARKING:
In St. George they are many drivers who park they vehicles
on the NO PARKING zone and causes congestion. These
vehicles create a one-way traffic as shown in photograph10
and causes accidents. This leads to major congestion on the
St. George road.
INDISCRIMINTING PEDESTRIAN CR0SSING:

Throughout St. George many pedestrians ignores pedestrian

crossing which can cause accidents and a build up of
traffic. Pedestrians can be hit by oncoming vehicles
when they don’t use the crossing and this leads to
congestion.
CONCLUSION

After collection of data and research conducted the

researcher observed that there are many causes of
traffic congestion in St. George’s.
Accidents can block and prevent the free flow of traffic.
Malfunctioning traffic lights can cause the traffic to stall
causing congestion and police officers may have to
control the traffic.
The vehicles parked illegally on the side of the road causing
the traffic to flow one way, leading to traffic congestion.
Funerals cause a slow movement of traffic and a major build-
up of vehicles.
Traffic congestion is also caused by narrow side-walks which
lead to obstruction of traffic.
Pot-holes is another cause of traffic congestion as vehicles
may have to slow down or swing away from them.
School zone, land slide, rush hour, illegal vending and
indiscriminating pedestrian on the St. George road may
all lead to congestion in this area.
