I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, we can;
 determine the elements of a short story;
 create a story map out of the given literature; and
 state the importance of respecting parents.

 Topic: LITERATURE: How My Brother Leon Brought Home A Wife.
 Materials: PowerPoint Presentation (Elements of Short Story)
 Reference/s: English In Perspective Way, pp. 148-156

 Vocabulary Drills
o The class will answer the vocabulary drill through the use of the
jumbled letters as a hint for them to determine the word that
corresponds to the meaning beside it, as shown in the slides that will
be flashed. The class will write their answers on their notebook.

 Strategy: Using Truth Signs


HOW: The teacher will not post five or more truth signs. Instead, the teacher
will post one truth sign every meeting and will further explain it before
posting. This will serve as an encouragement for the students.

B. Motivation
Directions: The class will answer the start up part on their LAS which is a “Contrast Chart”
(Life in the City vs. Life in the Province) and the teacher will ask few students to share their
answer.
C. Discussion
Strategy: Productive Discussion
HOW: The teacher will briefly discuss the following elements of a short story.
o Characters
o Setting
o Plot
o Conflict
o Theme
Strategy: Reading for a Task
HOW: Assign a written material for students to read. Then clearly describe the task they
need to do.
Direction: The class will be divided into four and will read the given written material for
10 minutes. After the allotted time, each group will identify the following elements of
a short story and will write their answers on a piece of paper for about 10 minutes.
a. Characters
b. Setting
c. Plot
d. Conflict
e. Theme

D. Generalization
o Again what is our topic for today?
o What are the elements of a short story?
o What is the literature that we’ve tackled today?
o What is the importance of respecting our parents?
IV. ASSESSMENT
Strategy: Muddiest Point
HOW: The students will answer the question “In today’s session, what was least clear to
you?” The students will then write their answer on a piece of paper.

ACTIVITY 1: Answer the following questions in a complete sentence.

1. Is Maria a typical city woman? Illustrate her based on what Baldo had seen from their
first meeting to their arrival at home.
2. What could be the father’s motive for instructing Baldo to take the Waig Road
instead of the Camino?
3. What does the choice of the road mean in the story?
4. Did Maria meet the father’s expectations? How did Leon help to do so?
5. Who was your favourite character in the story? Why?
