INFOSYS:

Initiatives:

Sustainability is one of their key corporate values. They aim to create sustainable value
through digital transformation efforts across industries and geographies – for their customers,
employees, shareholders and society.

1. Renewable Energy: As one of the early members of the global RE100 campaign,
the company is moving closer towards commitment of sourcing 100% of
electricity from renewables. They intend to meet 50% of their electricity
requirements from renewable energy for campuses across India, in fiscal 2020.
The total installed capacity of solar PV plants (rooftop and ground mounted) at
Infosys campuses is about 49 MW.
2. Reduce emissions (Carbon Offset Projects): These projects include
interventions such as construction of household biogas units or distribution of
efficient cookstoves to replace traditional cooking methods in rural India. The
portfolio also includes solar lighting projects in remote locations in India with
limited or no access to the grid. As part of carbon neutral goal and annual carbon
intensity reduction target, Infosys has implemented initiatives like process
redesign, energy efficiency retrofits in buildings, operational changes,
renewable energy generation and procurement.
3. Green buildings: All the new buildings follow the highest standards of
resource efficiency and set new benchmarks with every new building for
reduced environmental footprint. In the process, Infosys also aims to achieve
the highest level of green building certification.
4. Water metering and rainwater harvesting: The approach to water
management has been to reduce usage, recycle 100% of the wastewater, reuse
the treated wastewater and capture rainwater effectively. Infosys has a total of
350 injection wells across campuses with a potential to recharge more than 17.5
million litres of water in a day. They have also created several lakes in the
campuses to harvest rainwater.
5. Waste management: The operations do not necessitate the use of any natural
or recycled raw materials for packaging goods and services. Their suppliers are
encouraged to reuse packaging material. Waste is segregated at source, stored
and disposed to authorized recyclers, in adherence to applicable legislations.
Most of the food waste is treated in biogas plants installed within campus and
the gas generated is used for cooking in the food court kitchens and the resulting
compost is used for landscaping within the campus.

Impact:

1. Electricity consumption in kWh per capita per month reduced from 246 kWh
in 2010 to 133 kWh in 2019. A total of 48838 kWh of solar PV has been
installed across various locations in India including Sira, Hyderabad, Chennai
and more. In fiscal 2019, 121.18 million units (kWh) of our electricity
requirement was met by renewable sources, which is about 46.17% of the
overall electricity requirement across Infosys in India. Of this, 39.78 million
units were generated by solar PV plants installed in our campuses.
2. The monthly per capita GHG emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) for all locations in
India has reduced from 2.32 in 2010 to 0.76 in 2019. The initiatives have
contributed to reducing carbon intensity (Scope 2) by 8.92% in fiscal 2019 as
compared to fiscal 2018 of India operations.
3. The monthly per capita fresh water consumption for all the locations across
India has reduced from 3.30 kl in 2010 to 1.31 kl in 2019 i.e. around 60%
reduction. For the current fiscal, they have recycled 26,66,279 kl of water,
which amounts to 85% of total fresh water consumption and thereby reduced
requirement of fresh water to that extent for their operational requirements.
4. Since 2013, Infosys has deployed biogas plants as the primary system for food
waste treatment. With nine automated plants all over the country, they are
capable of treating 3,700 tons of food waste annually, producing gas equivalent
to over 10,000 commercial LPG cylinders every year. They have achieved their
goal of treating 100% of the food waste, thanks to biogas and composting
plants. They have also been able to meet more than 10% of their LPG needs
from biogas generated from food waste.
5. Some of the notable benefits of the carbon offset projects include:
 Saving cooking time by about 50%.
 Avoided deforestation through saving over 100,000 tonnes of firewood
annually.
 Positively impacting over 11 of the 17 UN SDGs
 Over 100,000 families continue to benefit socially and economically
through these projects, while generating offsets to the tune of just over
300,000 tCO2e.

Relevance to Sustainable development goals:

1. The initiatives taken by Infosys are in line with one or more UN SDGs (United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals). The initiative of renewable energy impacts UN SDG
7: Affordable and clean energy and UN SDG 12: Responsible consumption and
production.
2. The Carbon offset projects positively impact 11 of the 17 SDGs. Some of them are: No
poverty, Good health and well-being, Affordable and clean energy, Climate action,
Partnerships for goal etc.
3. Green building project impacts the following goals: UN SDG 9: Industry, Innovation
and Infrastructure, UN SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities, UN SDG 12:
Responsible consumption and production, and UN SDG 13: Climate Action.
4. Water metering and rainwater harvesting impacts UN SDG 6: Clean water and
sanitation.
5. Waste management program impacts UN SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy and UN
SDG 12: Responsible consumption.
