B.E. - ELE (VI - Semester) MSE UEE603: Switchgear & Protection
March 19, 2018 Monday, 13.00 — 15.00 Hrs Time: 02 Hours; Max. Marks: 30
Name of Faculty: Dr. Amrita Sinha, Dr. Prasenjit Basak

Note:
• Answer all the questions.
• Answer all parts of the question at same place only.
• Draw the neat diagrams, wherever required.

Ql. (a) Explain the essential qualities of a protective relay. (2)

(b) Define the following terms:
(i) Fuse (ii) Cut-off current (iii) Restriking voltage (iv) RRRV (v) pick-up current (5)

Q2. (a) Discuss the theory of CT with the help of equivalent circuit and phasor diagram (6)
and derive the expression for actual transformation ratio and phase angle error.
(b) Calculate the VA output required for a CT of 5A rated secondary current when burden (2)
consists of relay requiring IOVA at 5A and connecting lead resistance of 0.06 ohm.

Q3. (a) Enumerate the properties of SF6 which makes it suitable for the extinction of arc. (2)
(b) Describe the construction and working principle of Minimum oil circuit breaker. (3)
(c) In a 132 kV system, reactance and capacitance up to the location of the circuit breaker is
5 Q and 0.02 tiF, respectively. A resistance of 500 f2 is connected across the contacts of the (3)
circuit breaker. Determine (i) the natural frequency of oscillation (ii) damped frequency of
oscillation (iii) critical value of resistance.

Q4. (a) Explain the construction details and principle of operation of electromagnetic (2)
directional overcurrent induction disc relay.
(b) A 20MVA transformer which is used to operate at 30% overload feeds an IlkV bus- ( 5)
bar through a circuit breaker. The transformer circuit breaker is equipped with a 1000/5
current transformer and the feeder circuit breaker with 400/5 current transformer and
both the current transformers feed IDMT relays having the following characteristics.

Plug Setting Multiplier 2 3 5 10 15 20

Time (seconds) 10 6 4.1 3 2.5 2.2

The relay on the feeder circuit breaker has 125% plug setting and a 0.3 time multiplier
setting. If a fault current of 5000A flows from the transformer to the feeder, determine
(i) Operating time of the feeder relay.
(ii) Suggest suitable plug setting and time multiplier setting of the transformer relay to
ensure adequate discrimination of 0.5s between the transformer relay and feeder relay.

Answer sheets will be shown on 27 th March 2018 in E106 at 5:00 PM for ELE 1, 2 & 3 and 5:30 PM for ELE 4, 5 & 6
