11. Scope / Objectives of the project:

The main objective of the study aims at treating the kitchen waste water in
fixed film reactor filled with Activated Charcoal and Rice Husk fibers.

KSCST: Student Project Programme:43rdseries: 2019- 2020 – Stream A 2

And the specific objectives are
 To study the performance of the filter Activated Charcoal and
Rice Husk fibers used as filter media at different contact period
 To study the comparative removal efficiency of BOD, TSS, Oil
and Grease, Ph using Activated Charcoal and Rice Husk fibers
 Reduce load on treatment plant.
 Saving fresh water, Recycle and reuse of kitchen wastewater
 To study the effluent characteristics of kitchen wastewater

12. Methodology:
1. Material Collection
2. Analysis of Influent Characteristics
3. Preparation of Model and Filter Media
4. Analysis of Effluent Characteristics
5. Results Analysis with Different Filter Media

Analyzing the various parameters like BOD, COD, Total solids, oil &
grease etc for the kitchen waste water before treatment. And preparing
a three stage treatment Reactor for removal of parameters like BOD,
COD TSS etc.
Three stage treatment Reactor is made of 6mm Stainless Steel having
dimensions 25cmX25cmX42cm, with three Compartments. In first
Compartment provision is made for the removal of Oil and Grease.
Second Compartment is filled with Activated Charcoal and Rice husk
fibers for a known depth of 15cm to remove parameters like
BOD,COD,TS and Ph. In third Compartment chlorination is done as the
final step in treatment process. The main objective of this chlorine
addition is to disinfect the water. Dosage of chlorine can be found out
based on flow rate of kitchen waste water & capacity of treatment unit.
Analysis of effluent characteristics of kitchen waste water and
comparing the results with different filter media.

KSCST: Student Project Programme:43rdseries: 2019- 2020 – Stream A 3

Note:In case of fabrication work in the project, an engineering drawing with
dimensions / detailed design should be attached to the proposal.
13. Expected Outcome of the project :

The benefits of Kitchen waste water recycling includes;

 Developing simple purification system to improve Kitchen waste water for
poor farmers in rural areas with a very reasonable cost and that will enhance
their lives conditions.
 Reduce use of fresh water as the treated wastewater can be used for gardening
and other domestic purposes like washing and cleaning purposes.
 Less strain on septic tank or treatment plants.
 Reduced use of energy and chemicals.
 Ground water recharge.
 The spent fibers are rich in nutrient values and can be used as a organic manure
