TITLE: The effect of number of magnets on combined strength

SCENARIO: Aqyll was playing with magnets and paper clips. When he put two magnets
together, he discovers that they attracted more paper clips than a single magnet. Design an
experiment to investigate the relationship between the strength of a combined magnet and the
number of magnets used in the combination.

HYPOTHESIS: An increase in the number of magnets increase the combined strength of the
magnetic field.

AIM: To investigate the effect of the increase of magnets on the magnets on the combined
strength of the magnetic field.

APPARATUS: 1 RULER
1 PROTRACTOR

MATERIALS: 1 COMPASS
4 MAGNETS
1 GEOMETRY SET COMPASS

DIAGRAM:

METHOD:
1) Use a ruler to draw a line that is 10cm labelled for North.
2) Use a geometry set compass set at 10cm to draw a circle
3) Place the north of the compass at the north of the line drawn on the page.
4) Place 1 magnet 90o of the north and a draw a line moved by the distance of the
compass pointer.
5) Join another magnet with the other and place it at the 90o of the north line and record
the value at which the compass moves.
6) Repeat step 5 with another magnet and record the value.

VARIABLES:
Manipulating Variable: Amount of magnets joined together
Responding variable: The angle which the pin points on the angle

ANALYSIS OF DATA:
The magnetic field strength is expected to increase as the amount of magnets increase. This is
caused due to the motion of electric charges resulting in attractive and repulsive forces
between objects. All magnets have two ends where its magnetic effects are strongest. As the
amount of electric charges in motion increases due to the increase in magnets, the magnetic
field is expected to increase. A compass needle usually points north because the north pole of
the magnet inside it is attracted to the south pole of Earth's built-in magnet. When the magnet
therefore is placed next to the compass it is supposed to interfere with its magnetic field. The
interference with the magnetic field of the compass should increase as the amount of magnets
are added. The increase of the magnets are therefore expected to increase the combined
strength of the magnetic field.

PREDICTED RESULTS:
If the increase in the number of magnets increased the combined strength of the magnetic
field, then the hypothesis is valid. If however the increase in the number of magnets didn’t
increase the magnetic field, the hypothesis is invalid.

LIMITATION:
1. Since magnets are attracted to eachother the combined strength of magnetic field
can be inhibited
2. The earth’s magnetic field can contribute to the magnet’s magnetic field.

ASSUMPTION:
Assume the earth’s magnetic field is negligible
