Bulakenyos asked
to stop sharing fake
news on Covid-19
By: Lavinña Karyll Yadao & Benjie Ramirez

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan — The Provincial Health

Office-Public Health (PHO-PH) on Wednesday (Feb.
12) appealed to Bulakenyos to stop sharing fake news
on the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) that will
create panic and fear.
The PHO-PH clarified that currently, there are no positive nor confirmed cases of nCoV in the province
of Bulacan and that there is no reason to be hysterical.

Dr. Jocelyn Gomez, PHO-PH head, said that spreading fake news on social media and through text
messages is not helping the province nor the country address the Covid-19.
Gomez said the PHO-PH started using #NotoFakeNews and #BulacanNCOVFree in all their social media posts
to encourage the public to be vigilant about the real status of the deadly virus in the province.

“Let’s just get an update on the official DOH and PHO pages,” Gomez said. At present, the PHO-PH said there is
no confirmed case of Covid-19 in the province.

Patricia Ann Alvaro, health education promotion officer of the Provincial Health Office of Bulacan confirmed to
RONDA BALITA Online that as of Wednesday (Feb. 12), about 2:15 pm, five out of nine persons under
investigation (PUI), tested negative and already discharged, three are admitted and waiting for result while the
remaining one person under monitoring at home. The three PUIs will be put to the test and examination where
results from RITM are expected to appear within 48-96 hours.

Alvaro added that PUM is a person with a history of travel but without signs and symptoms of the disease while
PUIs are persons with a history of travel and with flu-like symptoms of the disease. According to the report, 2019
nCoV ARD can be transmitted in human to human through coughing and sneezing of an infected person or close
contact at home, work or health facility.

Meanwhile, World Health Organization advises the public to know the basic protective measures against the new
coronavirus including washing hands frequently, practicing respiratory hygiene like covering mouth and nose
when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs, and maintaining social distancing among
others.

Novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain from a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common
cold to more severe that has not been previously identified in humans. Common signs of infection include
respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, an
infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

President Duterte decided to let the homeless

Kadamay people to keep the vacant housing unit
they had taken over in Pandi, Bulacan. That was not
supposed to be the end of the story. The government
has to take the necessary steps to legitimize the
illegal take-over. The unit must be properly assigned
to families whose responsibilities would be specified
in agreements with the National Housing Authority.
The process would understandably take time and
considerable discussion and paperwork.

The leaders of Kadamay would have to meet the officials of NHA and other government agencies
concerned with housing- all with the goal of putting the case of anarchic takeover to rest, lest it lead to
further anarchy, not just in housing but in other areas of government.

About two weeks after the Kadamay families were allowed to stay in the Pandi Housing Project. The
town officials lead by the Mayor said they have now inherited the problem of the Kadamay families who
have no jobs and no opportunities of any kind, who need social services like schools and health centers
which Pandi, with its limited resources, cannot now provide.

Indeed, the Law R.A. 7279 mandates the government to undertake the housing program for the
underprivileged, in cooperation with the private sector, to make available to them decent housing at
affordable cost, basic services, and employment opportunities. But in reality, is that millions of Filipinos
today are jobless.

We hope that Kadamay initiative has not started a movement that will be difficult to control because
there are simply too many cases of impropriety, of inaction of in adequacy, of injustice that have filed
up over the years. But the government, under the new administration policy of change, must do what it
can to straighten out the accumulated problems one at a time. It can start with the Kadamay folk in
Pandi Bulacan.
