A.

The CF6-80C engine is composed of a compressor section, combustion section, turbine section,
and an accessory drive system. Each section (or system) is made up of subassemblies.

B. The engine is designed so that large subassemblies can be removed, exchanged, and installed
separately. This does not affect engine integrity or performance. It is termed modular
construction.

C. The engine is a dual-rotor, axial-flow turbofan powerplant having a high bypass ratio. The 14-
stage high pressure compressor is driven by a 2-stage high pressure turbine, and the integrated
front fan and low pressure compressor is driven by a 5-stage low pressure turbine. An annular
combustor converts fuel and compressor discharge air into energy to drive the turbines. The
engine features direct fan speed control and clearance control for the turbines. The accessory
drive system extracts energy from the high pressure compressor rotor to drive the engine-
mounted accessories. Reverse thrust for braking airplane after landing is supplied by an
integrated system which acts on the fan discharge airflow

A. Compressor Section

(1) Ambient air is compressed in the compressor section. Principal modules of the
compressor section consist of a fan rotor, fan stator, and high pressure compressor.
(a) The fan rotor consists of a single stage fan and a 4-stage low pressure
compressor rotor.

(b) The fan stator consists of 4 stages of stator casings bolted together. Acoustic
panels line fan casing to reduce sound levels. When fan stator is coupled with fan
rotor, a low pressure compressor is formed.

(c) The high pressure compressor consists of a high pressure compressor rotor and
a high pressure compressor stator/case.

1) The high pressure compressor rotor is the rotating component of a 14-stage

axial flow compressor.

2) The high pressure compressor stator/case consists of 5 stages of variable

vanes and 9 stages of fixed vanes.

a) The inlet guide vanes and the first five stator stages of the compressor use
variable angle vanes whose angular position is changed as a function of core
engine speed (N2) and compressor inlet temperature. The variability of angle
vanes optimizes compressor efficiency and stall margin at all engine speeds.
3) Part of the fan discharge airflow is passed through the compressor and is
progressively compressed as air moves from stage-to-stage. The stage 14
discharge air output is compressed by a ratio of approximately 30 to 1.
4) The case provides structural support between the fan frame and the
compressor rear frame.

00/001, Compressor Section - Description and Operation.

B. Combustion Section

(1) The combustion section is located in the compressor rear frame. Proper amounts
of fuel are combined with compressor discharge air and are ignited in the combustion
section.

(2) For a more detailed description of the combustion section, refer to AMM 72-40-
00/001, Combustion Section - Description and Operation.

C. Turbine Section

(1) Energy from combustion is used to drive turbines. Modules consist of a low
pressure turbine and a high pressure turbine.

(b) The high pressure turbine consists of 2 stages of rotor blades and stator vanes.
The turbine drives the high pressure compressor rotor.

(2) For a more detailed description of the turbine section, refer to AMM 72-50-
00/001, Turbine Section - Description and Operation.
D. Accessory Drive System

(1) The accessory drive system converts energy from the high pressure compressor
rotor to drive engine-mounted accessories. The accessory drive system consists of the
inlet gearbox, radial drive shaft, transfer gearbox, horizontal drive shaft, and accessory
gearbox.

(2) For a more detailed description of the accessory drive system, refer to AMM 72-
60-00/001, Accessory Drives - Description and Operation

(a) The low pressure turbine consists of 5 stages of rotor blades and stator vanes.
The turbine drives the low pressure compressor rotor.
