There are lots of things that the Philippines underwent in the 19th and 20th century, the

abuses, violence, and inhumane treatment they’ve experienced in the hands of the colonizers the

Spaniards and in the Americans. During the Spaniards reign in the Philippines which lasted for

almost 333 years they brought with them total changes in the lives of every individual in the

Philippines. One of those is the religion they brought with them in order to colonize the said island

in which the main goal as we know is to convert every individual into believing in Christianity.

As we know there are lots of benefits the Spaniards promised to the Filipinos but because

of some greedy officials which the Spaniards assigned to the Philippines, exploitation took placed

in our land. Colonial outpost, it is one of the main reason of the Spaniards in staying in our country.

The Philippines lacks economic promise for Spain/Crown but was retained as colony due to some

reasons .We could be a stepping stone to China and Japan and staging ground for missionary

efforts. We could be useful as outpost of Spanish empire for curving out an Oriental Empire.

Another is that Philippines is to be used as base for the conquest of neighboring nations. Due to

these Philippines was relegated to the role of a mere missionary and military way – station. These

are the factors that discouraged serious efforts for economic development

Certain aspect of the Spaniards ruling affected us much especially in the aspect of their

administrative agencies which affected the Filipinos socially, politically and economically.

Because certain encomiendas were reserved to the crown under the care of the alclades-mayores,

the head of the alcaldias or provincves. They supervised the tax collection from the crown

encomiendas and were only responsible only to the royal officials in Manila. As more and more

private encomiendas reverted to the crown the power of the alcaldes-mayores increased. This type

of ruling affected much the lives of every Filipinos because offices abused much their authority
by collecting more than what the law required. The act of collecting was the occasion for much

cruelty. Since the people did not regard the exaction of tribute to be justified, they often defied the

authorities and refused to pay it. Many who did not pay, or could not pay, were tortured and

imprisoned. Others fled to the mountains only to have their houses looted or burned down by the

Spaniards in punishment for their defiance. It was awful for every Filipino because in the first

place it was their land yet they were governed and abused by individuals who just came in-in their

country to look for goods and benefits of their own. Other than that, on the educational system

though the Spaniards put up schools in our country it was controlled by the Spanish friars and at

that time discrimination towards the Filipinos were displayed in the society, because only those

who can afford can send themselves to studies especially to those who belong to the wealthy

family. The Spaniards displayed little attention in the educational system for the Filipinos in fear

that they would revolt and would cause chaos in their ruling. Friars hardly discriminated Filipinos

because even if they were able to enter school and study, the friars believed that Filipinos would

not still be able to match their skills and they will only learn fast if they would strictly implement

disciplinary actions or the means of applying corporal punishment.
