Executive Summary

The project proposes an efficient implementation for IoT (Internet of Things) used for monitoring
and controlling the home appliances, devices and security with the help of Mobile App.Home
automation system uses the portable devices i.e. Mobile as a user interface. They can communicate
with home automation network through an Internet gateway, by Wi-Fi .The system includes
remote control and monitoring domestic appliances and security management and sensors .One
additional feature in IoT BASED HOME AUTOMATION is controlling the system by SPEECH
RECOGNITION which aims to provide the user the facility to control their home appliances
through internet and also control it through their speech .The objective of this work is to implement
an IOT based smart home controller and control it through the smart phones.

Introduction

The concept of smart homes is getting more attention in the present world power system scenario, which
possesses the ability to remote and monitors the devices. A home automation system is a technological
solution that enables automating the bulk of electronic, electrical and technology-based tasks within a home.
It uses a combination of hardware and software technologies that enable control and management over
appliances and devices within a home. The smart phones add the advantage of making this process simpler
and cheaper. The main purpose of doing this is to convert present devices into smart devices by connecting
them to internet providing more feasibility to monitor and control different tasks as well as security and
safety management. Internet of Things (IOT) is a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
evolution which connects any number of devices to the internet, and makes it highly scalable.

1.1 Problem Statement

Today people are looking at ways and means to better their life-style using the latest technologies that
area available. Any new facility or home appliance that promises to enhance their life-style is grabbed by
the consumers. The more such facilities and appliances are added, it becomes inevitable to have easy and
convenient methods and means to control and operate these appliances. Conventional wall switches are
located in different parts of a house and thus necessitates manual operations like to switch on or off these
switches to control various appliances. It gets virtually impossible to keep track of appliances that are
running and also to monitor their performances. Also in today’s advanced era electricity has been one of
the main contributors of energy consumption. The solution is control amount of energy used by monitor-

ing the home's gadgets when needed. Also security and safety of the house is also a key attention for the
people while making their homes.
The main purpose of this project is to come up with a cost-effective home appliances control system and
to overcome following problems.

 Difficulties of controlling the home devices from a great distance.

 Wastage of the electrical energy, if we do not control the home devices properly.
 Security and Safety of the home

1.2 Aim and Scope

The objective of this work is to implement an IOT based smart home controller and control it through the
smart phones. That depicts the smart home controller where the loads are connected to internet through
microcontroller and IOT. Also monitors the system that what components are working properly and
automated according to the situation and environment. And to improve home automation system to save
energy.
The scope of this project includes developing a smart home automation system based on internet of things.
The system aims to reduce the energy waste. The system implementation utilizes PCB Board and
NodeMCU (ESP8266) to provide a control mechanism to the system.. Sensors and other IOT objects are
utilized in this project to make the home automation system much intelligent and energy saver.

1.3 Project Background/ Previous Work Done

Previously a lot of efforts have been carried out in making the homes more intelligent, smart and secure.
Some of them lack quality features some have issues with the safety and some were dealing with only the
appliances to be automated. A home is never called a smart home until it is advanced , convenient and
Secure. But still there are many possibilities to enhance the idea and to bring the advanced technology more
closely and interactive with the people. As there is no end to the technology so living this Era of IOT we
have come up with the better solutions.

1.4 Expected Deliverable /End Product

Upon the completion of this project it is expected to achieve these results:

 Produce an implemented system that controls and monitors the house gadgets in different
conditions.
 Android application that helps users to control and monitor their devices at home via mobile
phones.
 Produce a smart home system that efficiently reduces energy wastages.
 A Secure setup for the smart home using different sensors.

1.5 Limitations

Following are the must have limitations for using this system
 Wi-Fi must be available by the user or admin.
 From Web page only devices (appliances) can be operate not a sensor.
 Application must be installed on the Android operating system.
