LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

Name of Teacher: Date:

Quarter:
Duration: 1 hour

Content Standard for the Quarter:

The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of Pythagorean
Theorem.

Content Standard for the Quarter:

The learner is able to solve problems using Pythagorean Theorems.

I. Learning Competency
Domain Competency
Geometry

II. Subject Matter: Pythagorean Theorem

Reference:
Materials: Tape measure, mark pens, Power point presentation
Value Focus: Teamwork

III. Procedure
A. Initiatory Phase (Explore)
*Prayer
Good morning class! Somebody among the group can lead the prayer.
*Checking of attendance
It seems that no one among you is absent; let’s proceed to our topic for
today.
1. Drill/Review
Yesterday we are through discussing about the area of polygon’s
square, triangle, rectangle and parallelogram.
Again, please familiarize yourselves with the formula.

1. Square
A=𝑠 2
2. Rectangle
A=lw
3. Triangle
1
A = 2bh
4. Parallelogram

A=bh

2. Motivation

This morning we will learn the next lesson, but before that, we will
have some game first.
I will give you pictures, and all you have to do is to give me the
correct word for that picture. There is also some letters that serves as
your clue to that word.
So, are you ready?

3. Statement of the Aim

In this lesson, you are expected to:
*Understand the concept of Pythagorean Theorem.
*Solve problems using Pythagorean Theorem.

B. Lesson Proper (Interaction)

1. Teacher’s Activity
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
“Class, this morning we will study
about the Pythagorean Theorem.”

“Long time ago, for over 2000 years

ago, there was an amazing discovery
about triangles:
When a triangle has a right angle (90
ᵒ), and squares are made on each of Students listen quietly.
the three sides, then the biggest
square has the exact same area as the
other two squares put together.

It is called “Pythagorean Theorem”

or Pythagoras Theorem”, which is
named after the ancient Greek
Mathematician Pythagoras .”

It can be written in one short

equation:

𝐜 𝟐 = 𝐚𝟐 + 𝐛𝟐

Where:
c = length of hypotenuse
b & a = length of other two
sides/legs

“Supposing side a is unknown, then

the formula will be:

𝐚𝟐 = 𝐜 𝟐 − 𝐛𝟐

If side b is unknown:

𝐛𝟐 = 𝐜 𝟐 − 𝐚𝟐

“Class, can you follow our

derivation?”

“Yes Ma’am.”

“Let’s try some examples.

Given: a = 6, b = 8, c = ?

Solution:
𝐜 𝟐 = 𝐚𝟐 + 𝐛𝟐
Thank you, it’s correct. 𝐜 𝟐 = 𝟔 𝟐 + 𝟖𝟐
𝐜 = √𝟔2 + 𝟖𝟐
𝐜 = 10
“Now let’s apply Pythagorean
Theorem to Problem Solving

A 4-meter ladder is 2m from the

base of a building. How high up does
the ladder reach?
𝐛𝟐 = 𝐚𝟐 − 𝐜 𝟐
𝒛 = √𝒙2 + 𝐲 𝟐
𝐳 = √(𝟒𝒎)2 − (𝟐𝐦)𝟐
= √1𝟔𝒎2 − 𝟒𝐦𝟐
= √𝟏𝟐𝒎2
𝐳 = 𝟑. 𝟒𝟔𝒎

“Very good! It seems that you can

easily answer our test later.”
2. Abstraction
When can we apply the Pythagorean theorem in solving triangles?
Suppose “a and b” ,”b and c”, “c and a” are given , how do we find
the number of the unknown sides?

3. Generalization
“Anyone who can state and define Pythagorean theorem?”

Pythagorean Theorem: In a right triangle, the square of the

hypotenuse is equal to the squares of the two sides/legs.

C. Integration

1. Engagement/Application

I have here another activity for further understanding. I need 4

volunteers in this activity. I will group you into 4 groups, and all you have
to do is to measure the legs of the right triangle (right triangle is formed
by lining the shoes of the four students).
Label each line of shoes. Measure each by your measuring device
and record it on your paper. If you have already gathered enough
information, you can now solve for the hypotenuse or the line from the
tip of the shoes to another side of it using the Pythagorean Theorem.
After you have recorded your data, measure the hypotenuse or the
distance from the tip of the shoes to another tip. Make sure you are using
the same units, like cm’s or inches. Did you get the same answer?

2. Assessment

Direction: Complete the table; use the Pythagorean relation in finding the
missing lengths.
a 5 6 10 25
b 8 5 10
c 12

1.) 2.) 3.) 4.)

D. Agreement/Assignment
Study about altitude and hypotenuse.
