Ida Tursic and Wilfried Mille

Holzwarth Publications 2019 ISBN 9783947127207 Acqn 30241
Hb 23x29cm 238pp col ills £52

"Painting seemed to be the most powerful weapon available to us," Ida Tursic & Wilfried Mille
explain their subversive choice of a well-travelled medium. "It offers infinite possibilities all while
simultaneously being the simplest to implement in the beginning of this new century that is
saturated with images and new technologies." Freely mixing things, Tursic & Mille's paintings give
us pin-ups of both sexes, cute pets, artist heroes, and Cezanne's favourite landscape, all shook
up by colourful abstractions that often invade the other subjects. They sample elements from all
reaches of our visual culture today, provoking our good taste, and challenging our sense of
beauty. The book focuses on the artists' work since 2012, including canvases and large-scale
wooden cutouts that literally move painting into the exhibition space-a strategy of direct
interaction and confrontation with the viewer culminating in their immersive installation for the Prix
Marcel Duchamp in 2019.

Albert Oehlen - Mirror Paintings 1982-1990

Holzwarth Publications 2020 ISBN 9783947127221 Acqn 30496
Hb 24x29cm 238pp col ills £49.95

Mirror Paintings between 1982 and 1990 - between Albert Oehlen's earliest work, when he found
a new freedom in figurative painting with loose brushstrokes and a subversive sense of humour,
and the end of the decade, when he painted mostly abstract canvases, riddling his inventive
compositions with art-historical references and playful motifs. Oehlen first glued mirrors onto the
painting surface as part of an arsenal of sometimes absurd challenges he posed on himself,
painting over and around them with thick colours and layers of varnish. The mirrors at the same
time became part of the composition, disrupted the pictorial space, and, with a wink, included the
figure of the viewer into paintings of living rooms, museum interiors, or stage-like spaces
enclosed by heavy brick walls.
