Inspiring teachers in the state of Nevada must pass the Praxis Core exam, along with
completing a bachelor’s degree, in order to obtain a teaching license. It is recommended that the
Praxis exam be taken before enrollment in a bachelor program at a college or university. I will be
enrolling at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and in order to be admitted into their
Elementary Teacher Education Program it is required to have passing Praxis scores. The Praxis
Core exam measures academic skills in three areas: reading, writing, and mathematics. It can be
taken whole, all three areas, or each subject separately, but each area is graded individually. The
reading portion requires a passing score of 156, the writing portion’s passing score is 162, and
math is 150.
I have yet to take the Praxis Core Exam and have only minimally prepared for it. I have
read about it and learned the requirements, how to register and fees. I purchased a book that aims
to prepare the exam taker but have only browsed through it. Only in this course have I completed
any type of practice or preparation for the exam. I visited, studied, and took notes on all
recommended websites given along for this assignment. I watched a few preparation videos,
printed, and read the recommended study guides for all three subjects, along with practice
questions/answers. I feel the practice test was the most efficient study guide of all, however.
I was very surprised with my scores on the practice exams honestly, and not because I
expected to do better, because I know my preparation for it wasn’t enough, but because I
expected the opposite of what I got. In the reading practice exam portion, I scored a 63% which
means I need improvement in order to pass that portion of the Praxis Core Exam. I have never
struggled with any reading course and would consider reading and reading comprehension as one
of my strengths. In the writing part I scored a 93%, meaning I am very likely to pass the writing
3
portion of the Praxis Core Exam. Writing is one of the subjects I have worked on throughout the
last couple of years to improve. Finally, in the math portion I scored an 89% which means I am
likely to pass the math portion of the Praxis Core Exam. This was the opposite of what I was
expecting as I find math to be one of my most difficult subjects. Most of the time I took to
Undoubtfully, I consider myself not ready for the Praxis Core Exam, and I do need a lot
more preparation to succeed on it. With the study guides I printed and the book I previously
purchased I can start to work on the areas where I wasn’t very successful. I am also looking into
a Praxis preparation course offered at UNLV, and while visiting the given websites also found
many videos with detailed explanations on many of the questions/problems given. The Teachers
Test Prep website also offers a preparation course and tutoring that I am already considering as
well. I appreciate this assignment in the beginning of the course as I can now put in the much-
