Technical Questions

What is IP address?

IP address is a numerical label which is assigned to devices participating in a computer network that uses Internet
Protocol.Every machine on the Internet has a unique identifying number, called an IP Address. A typical IP address
looks like this: 216.27.61.137

What is a Modem? A modem is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and
also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that
can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used over any means
of transmitting analog signals, from driven diodes to radio.
What is Server?
A server is a a software program, or the computer on which that program runs, that provides a specific kind of
service to client software running on the same computer or other computers on a network.
What is Operating System?
An operating system is the software on a computer that manages the way different programs use its hardware, and
regulates the ways that a user controls the computer. Operating systems are found on almost any device that
contains a computer with multiple programs—from cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers
and web servers, and even automobiles. Some popular modern operating systems for personal computers include
Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (see also: list of operating systems, comparison of operating systems).
What is Switches?
A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN).
Technically, network switches operate at layer two (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model
Switches are more advanced than hubs and less capable than routers. Unlike hubs, switches can limit the traffic to
and from each port so that each device connected to the switch has a sufficient amount of bandwidth. For this
reason, you can think of a switch as a "smart hub." However, switches don't provide the firewall and logging
capabilities that routers do. Routers can often be configured by software (typically via a Web interface), while
switches only work the way the hardware was designed.
What is Routers?
A Router is a device that connects two networks - frequently over large distances. It understands one or more network protocols, such
as IP or IPX. A Router accepts packets on at least two network interfaces, and forwards packets from one interface to another.
Router's may be programmed to filter out some packets, and to dynamically change the route by which packets are routed.
Router's often use different media on each interface. For instance, a router might have one Ethernet port and one ISDN port.

What is Hub?
This is a hardware device that is used to network multiple computers together. It is a central connection for all the
computers in a network, which is usually Ethernet-based. Information sent to the hub can flow to any other
computer on the network. If you need to connect more than two computers together, a hub will allow you to do so.
If you only need to network two computers together, a simple crossover Ethernet cable will do the trick.

How to Find IP address through windows?

1. Go to the Start menu, go to Run, and type "CMD" in the dialog box (without the quotes).
2. Now you should see a dark (DOS) window that looks just like the picture on the left of this article
step.

Without the quotes, type "IPCONFIG" and press ENTER

3. Now you should see some network information, along with the IP ADDRESS of your computer listed.

===- END -===

4. The following steps are OPTIONAL:

If more information is needed, other than the IP address, type the following from the same DOS box
described in step two: IPCONFIG /ALL

This will provide you with more network information on your computer. Its purposes may vary5. There
are also websites available that can provide your computer IP, such as www.whatismyip.com. 6If you
have a router/network set up, please note that the initial steps above will only show you the network's IP from
the router. For example, if you have a Linksys router installed, and perform the IPCONFIG command, it will
show you something like "192.168.1.x" as opposed to your computer's local/root address. For this reason,
following STEP 5 above may be useful

What is Dns?
DNS: (Domain Name System). A DNS server lets you locate computers on a network or the Internet (TCP/IP network) by domain name. The
DNS server maintains a database of domain names (host names) and their corresponding IP addresses. PC Pitstop's IP address,
64.29.193.182, corresponds to the DNS name www.pcpitstop.com.
