CHAPTER I: The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary
education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]).The main
purpose of this curriculum is to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop
lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development,
employment, and entrepreneurship. In a historic moments for advocates of educational equity, former
President Benigno Aquino III approved Republic Act 10533, signing into the law K to 12 program on
May 15, 2013.

Statement of the Problem

1. Why the government did add the K to 12 curriculums?


2. What are the positive effects of K to 12 on students, parents, and teachers?
3. What are the negative effects of K to 12 on students, parents, and teachers?

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will benefit the following:

The researchers. This study helps them to become aware about the positive and negative effects
of K to 12 curriculum program on students, parents, and teachers and helps them to lessen their time on
conducting the same study.

The institution. The findings of the study will allow the school to know how K to 12 curriculums
affects their student in terms of learning and help the teachers to improve their way of teachings.

The government. This study plays an important role on the government to produce better methods
of teaching and to provide facilities and modules for the enhancement of the quality of education in the
Philippines.

Definition of Terms

Advocate – supporting a policy for a better education.


Curriculum – a course that are taught by a school

Entrepreneurship – establishing and managing of business.

Module – a book that contains all the activities and lessons that a student should follow.

CHAPTER II: Review of Related Literature

Local Literature

The review of the literature for this study focuses on education and its role in shaping the future of
students in K to 12 Curriculum in response to global competitiveness particularly in ASEAN Economic
Community by 2015. The literature will also discuss issues about job market, job mismatch, competitiveness and
marketability or employability.

Local Studies

At this pace of this changing society and economy a lot of actions should take place. They have to face a
lot of challenges especially educators who are being asked to do more with less due to rapidly evolving
technologies and ongoing shifts in global economy and demography.
