Embedding technology into language learning has been one of the main concerns in the field
of applied linguistics. Although it is sometimes difficult to keep up with the fast-pacing and
constantly-changing technology, it is very important to adapt to this situation. For many years
now, computer games have been utilized to support language learning. Some researchers
have pointed out the benefits of using games in language learning i.e. learner-centered,
increasing learning motivation, reducing learning anxiety, and integrating various linguistic
skills. In this respect, we started a project aiming at designing online interactive English
games for Indonesian junior high school students based on the current K-13 curriculum.
Online interactive games make it possible for the students to access the games from anywhere
as long as they have internet connection. For the first step, we have designed a game named
‘Smart Survivor Adventures’ which is intended for grade VII students. It was designed using
Unity 2D video game engine. The adventure-themed game emphasizes in reading skills. In
this game, the player needs to explore different ecosystems and they will encounter various
animals on their way. They will be given a description of the animals after completing a task.
In the end of the game, there will be an evaluative task to assess the player’s reading
comprehension. Based on questionnaire data, the game has been well received by the
students. At this moment, the investigation on the effectiveness of the game is underway.
