The influence of Social Media Platforms has gathered us today as new  words were born and

were instantly popularized. Cambridge Dictionary defines Neologism as, “a new word or
expression, or a new meaning for an existing word.’’ Social media neologisms are incorporated
in our language and expands our human communication. The millennial generation is fleeting,
as Generation Z takes the stage which were born from year 1995 and after. The rise of new
vocabulary for this newest generation is a normal occurrence in their everyday life.

One great example is the word flex. Evidently, it has been used in the English
dictionary since last decade which defined as, ‘to bend especially repeatedly’. According
Merriam Webster, to flex means to move or contract the muscles; flexing the biceps in your arm,
for example, makes them appear more prominent, and so often we flex as a pose to indicate
strength, as in front of a camera or mirror.

For the year 2019, the word ‘flex’ was redefined. If you have been scrolling through
different social media apps you cannot miss the word ‘flex’. In the words of Dictionary.com, Flex
is a slang term meaning "to show off," whether it be your physique, your belongings, or some
other thing you consider superior to others. The act of flexing is often criticized as a power
move, considered arrogant and insincere in some situations. The internet and social media has
consistently used the word to refer to acts of flexing, when we show off for our audience.

Additionally, flex was popularized by Rich Homie’s Quan’s 2015 song, “Flex (Ooh
Ooh Ooh)” which features the lyrics: “Cause I got a check, niggas wanna flex / Ain’t gotta flex
but I got it, ooohh.” This song peaked at No. 2 on Billboard Hot 100 a few months after its
release in February, here it is used in its first definition.

Appreciation posts in the social uses ‘Flex’ to have validation to their posts. By using it
as an opening sentence or in the middle we knew that person was up to recognize someone. An
example is from Kirkland, “Never to be mixed with the nerds on Twitter or the inspirational
meme queen that is your grandmother on Facebook, Instagram is for abs. It's for luxury. It's for
the flex. So it should come as no surprise that the most liked post on the social media platform
was once from Kylie Jenner, who used the platform to announce her daughter's name to an
astounding 18 million likes' ' as written in Esquire.com. The usage of this word didn't look
promptly on some posts. Hence, in such a short time, the expression flex emerged into a new
expression ‘weird flex but ok’ from the year 2019.
