Episode 9

My FS Learning Episode Overview

This episode emphasizes the different ways at working at the curriculum. It explains
various curriculum design models and how these are applied in the school setting.

My Intended Learning Outcome

 Explain the characteristics of each curriculum design model;

 Cite situations on how these models are used in various schools;

 Observe classes how these curriculum models are applied in school setting.

My Performance Criteria

I will be rated along the following:

 Quality of my observations and document,

 Completeness and depth of analysis,

 Depth and clarity of classroom observation-based reflection,

 Completeness, organization, clarity of portfolio and

 Time of submission of portfolio.

My Learning Essentials
Peter Oliva’s 10 Axioms (An axiom is defined as self-evident or universally recognized
truth; a maxim) for curriculum designers.

Types of Curriculum Design Model

My Learning Activities

These are types of Curriculum Design Models. Complete the template given below
Activity 1
by citing their best features/advantages

Curriculum Design
Models Best Features

1. Subject-Centered design  This design’s best feature is the variation that

focuses on the individual subject, specific
1.1 Subject Design discipline and a combination of subjects.

1.2 Discipline Design  It has a specific knowledge through method

which the scholar uses to study a specific
content of their field.

1.3 Correlation Design

 The correlation design best feature is the
subjects that are related to one another but
each subject maintains of what it indicates.

1.4 Scrap Field

Design/Interdisciplinary  The design is made to categorize the subjects
Design to prevent the correlated content.

2. Learner-Centered
Design  The best features are the children who are
active participants in their own education and
2.1 Child-centered Design development. This means that they should be
mentally involved and physically active in
learning what they need to know and do.

2.2 Experience-Centered
Design  This focus on how the child responds to, engages
with, or learns from the events, people, materials,
and social or emotional environment of the
classroom.
2.3 Humanistic Design
 Refers to the human behavior and intelligence to
carry out the everyday tasks that typically fall on
us. Companies are already collaborating to provide
a holistic, streamlined experience for their learners.

3. Problem-Centered  Students will see direct relevance to what they are

 ntent is organized around aspects of community life
3.1 Life Situation Design and by having students study social or life
situations, they not only study ways to improve
society but become directly involved in that
improvement.

3.2 Core Problem Design

 It centers on general education and the problems
are based on common human activities. The central
focus of the core design includes common needs,
problems, and concerns, of the learners.

My Personal Insights

The three learning models possess advantages and drawbacks. Subject-centered

approach benefits students by getting inspired by the lecturers who are experts of the
subject matter. However, it can cause passivity and lack of integration. Meanwhile,
learner-centered model provides more opportunities for students to engage in learning,
enhance autonomy in learning, and develop a great sense of accountability and
responsibility. On the other hand, it heavily burdens the teachers in providing support
and effective communications to students. Lastly, problem-centered model displays
very practical approach to learning that encourages students to approach learning
deeply, and boosts retention and high-order thinking skills. A combination of the three
may greatly address the needs of the students in 21st century.
Interview at least four (4) people and ask them their perception about the K to 12
Activity 2 program. Complete the comic strip balloons.

“I think, it’s an opportune time of the implementation of K to 12 program. Under this

program, our students will graduate at the age of 18 yrs old and become more knowledgeable,
equipped and responsible to choose their prepared career compared to 16-years old, who still
prone to shift from one course to another because of their young age. The additional two years to
the basic education curriculum can also further hone and produce reinforced educational
foundation, which can prepare the students for more meticulous and updated potentials for
educational development. The implementation and establishing of practical training module and
internship can develop the learning perspective of the learners and can broaden, widen and
expand their outlook viewpoints.”

~ Dr. Ma. Flordeliz U. Duran

Senior High Dept. Principal

“Detractors of K+12 should compare graduates from public to private schools. Even
among private schools themselves, they will find considerable differences. Students who took
six years in high school re better prepared for college, re more adept in math and the sciences,
have better command of the English language, among others. It’s the best investment parents can
give to their children.”

~Ms. Tita Visorro

Grade 12 STEM Adviser

“It is an ideal program which will arm high school graduates with livelihood skills
needed to make them productive members of our community.”

~Ms. Mary Jane Janito

Grade 11- ABM Adviser

“Times are changing and changes must happen also to our educational system. The K-12
program will advocate producing graduates that will be ready for employments. Curriculum
innovations are just merely part of educational reform therefore we should welcome it and
cooperate with what would be for the betterment of our students.”

~Ms. Carmen Baylon

My Personal Insights

K to 12 program was design to provide holistic education for all students. This means
that students will be able to improve their communication and social skills, increase positive peer
interaction and many educational outcomes. Moreover, students will gain more knowledge and
experience that will be essential in the future. However, part and parcel of the successful
implementation is in the full support of the teacher and should serve as the human dynamite that
could create an atmosphere being the catalyst of the implementation.
As a future educator, I would like to give or provide best education to my students in
order for them to become skillfully in global market and be ready to compete globally. I should
be ready to achieve my everyday goals and objectives in every lessons or subject matter because
once the teacher knows what she/he do then the class or students would prosper in good
outcome.

Activity 3
Analyze each component of the given syllabus. How are the components stated?
Are the activities aligned with the intended learning outcomes and modes of
assessment?

A sample of OBE Syllabus in Structure of English.

As I study the syllabus it contains information about the course which includes the
Course Code, Credit Unit, Program Placement, if it is a Prerequisite course and the Course
Description. The Philosophy, Vision and Mission of the School are also stated. The Classroom
Policies are also given emphasis.

The second part then consists of Course Outline and Time-frame of the subject. The
different topics each week are being highlighted to make sure that the teacher will be able to
cover the entire necessary topic and comply with the required discussion. This is to make sure
also that the intended learning outcome for the said course is being achieve.

As for the Learning Plan or I-Plan, the components are described in matrix style. It
composes of the Desired Lesson Outcomes in each subject matter, the Topic or the Subject
Matter to be tackled, the Teaching Learning Activities (TLAs), the Resources or Materials/
Readings and the Assessment Tasks.

Then of course, on the last part, the references are being stated.
My Analysis:

Outcome Based Education goal is to present the knowledge and skills of an older
generation to the new generation of students, and to provide students with an environment in
which to learn.

According to Saylor, Alexander, and Lewis Model Curriculum “Curriculum planners

begin by specifying the major educational goals and specific objectives they wish to be
accomplished”. Outcome is the prior in the educational institution. The focus on outcomes
creates a clear expectation of what needs to be accomplished by the end of the year. Teacher
should be ready and mastered her/his lesson and at the end of the day he/she will expect that the
students understand the lessons. The implication for this activity is to develop the skills,
knowledge and the behavior of the students. To have a student’s-students relationship or they can
promote interpersonal relationship. Teacher will develop students’ full potential in actual
behavior to have LIFELONG LEARNING outcomes.
