CHAPTER 1

The Problem

Introduction

Cutting class is a very prevalent issue nowadays in schools, both private

and public. Students who experienced doing this have reasons which are not that

even valid enough to be the cause of escaping from their respective classes. This

act of not attending classes regularly creates or gives a bad effect on a student’s

academic performance.

When a student cuts class, he/ she is maybe already aware of the

consequences of it but still do it for a reason, a reason that he/ she thinks that is

valid, a reason that can satisfy himself/ herself, or maybe, commits it because of

having a strong and very necessary cause. Well, even though cutting class

requires a reason for student both valid or not, it is still a wrong decision to make,

and not the best solution to satisfy your needs or wants.

In Philippine context, according to Department of Education (2009) cutting

of classes became rampant in public schools in the Philippines. Public schools in

the Philippines where there is inefficient security and a relatively high number of

students thus making it hard to monitor each student (Viola, 2016). Yet, private

schools having less number of student’s population still have students who

supports or continue to cut class. One of these is PAX High School at

Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur. The population of this private school is said to
have lesser students enrolled but some students kept on skipping classes for some

reasons, like: absence of parents’ guidance, addiction to video games, financial

problem, family problem, laziness, being influenced by friends, academic

problems, and addiction to illegal drugs.

Cutting of classes may have its effects towards the grades of the several

students. Cutting of classes have its significant relationship with the students’

academic performance. Failing grades and poor academic performance may be

the result cutting of classes and it would be worst if it will not be prevented

(Academia.edu).

In every child’s life, attending school is very important. With this we will be

educated. An educated person brings so much in the nation, but what will happen

when if student don’t attend classes regularly? In school, we learn a lot of things

that cannot be learned in the outside world, that is the reason why attending class

is a very important in a student’s life.

Therefore, in this study, the researchers want to understand that attending

class is vital for a good education and a good future. Attendance of

students in class serves a predictor to their success. A student's time in

class not only affects themselves in the present, but also their families and

teachers. But most importantly, attending class has a very high impact on a

student's future and on his/ her academic performance.

Perspective of the Researcher

The researchers are Grade 10 students of PAX High School. They are from

Poblacion, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.

They want to be successful in the future and people that can give

contributions to the society. They want to study the causes of cutting classes at

PAX High School in Poblacion, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.

The sole of the study is to determine the reason why junior and senior high

school students cut classes.

Researchers would like to know what triggers the students to do cutting

classes. Moreover, to be abreast regarding the satisfaction the students well. Well

as to know the problems affect the academic performance of the said respondents.

The chosen respondents are the Junior and Senior High School Students

of PAX High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to help students as well as their parents and teachers

address the problem in its early stage to avoid much greater problems in the future.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the reasons why students cut classes?

2. What are the effects of cutting classes to the students?

3. Are the students aware of the consequences when they cut class?

4. How would the school help in order to lessen or stop students from cutting

class?

5. What are the ways to be taken to prevent cutting classes?

Scope and Limitation

This study will focus on the causes why students are fond of cutting classes

wherein it will be measured using statistical methods. Moreover, this study will also

look for the main cause of doing cutting classes in relation to their relationship,

mental health, peers and vices as well.

This will be conducted at PAX High School this March 2019. The

respondents of this study is the students of Junior High School which is composed

of Grade 7, 8, 9 and 10 and the Senior High School which is composed of Grade

11 and 12.

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students. The students would be able to stop cutting classes. They would

become more responsible and think of a better future. Moreover, this study will

help the students attend their class regularly since this will provide them realistic

information about the benefits that they can obtain in attending school.

Parents. Parents could encourage their children to attend school regularly

and stop cutting classes. It is also being able to know the behavior of their children

at school and the students surrounding them. They could give the guidance and

support the their son/ daughter need in dealing with cutting classes that may affect

their performance in school.

Teachers and Principal. They could implement plans to help the students

stop cutting classes. They could encourage each students to attend their classes

regularly.

Future Researchers. The results in this study may be used as reference

data in conducting new researchers or in testing the validity of other related

findings similar to this study. Therefore, they can validate some of the findings to

the future studies and can be resourced data to the future researchers in

conducting a similar research.

Definition of Key Terminologies

To have a better understanding of this study, the following terms were

defined:

Junior High School. another term for middle school.

Senior High School. a secondary school typically comprising the two highest

grades.

Cutting Class. is a coined term is a coined term, that actually means intentionally

not attending a required class in one's formal education without a valid

excuse/reason.

Academic Performance. refers to the level of schooling you have successfully

completed and the ability to attain success in your studies.

Student. a person who is studying in a school, especially an older child.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter is composed of related literatures and studies and related

readings. The researchers gone through intensive readings of materials, both

printed and download through the internet which has a great significant to the

problem during the course of research writing. The chapter presents Local,

National and Global sources.

Local Studies

National Studies

In Philippine context, according to Department of Education (2009) cutting

of classes became rampant in public schools in the Philippines. Public schools in

the Philippines where there is inefficient security and a relatively high number of

students thus making it hard to monitor each student (Viola, 2016).

Complaints of students cutting classes and spending time in internet shops

even during class hours have risen in Quezon City weeks after the start of this

school year. With this scenario, several Quezon City councilors prodded the city

government and concerned agencies to send teams that will randomly conduct

inspections on computer shops and internet cafes operating in the city, and

penalize them if found to be accommodating students during class hours.

Moreover, this problem is one of the most rampant issue in many school

incorporated with the cutting of classes.

Global Studies

In global context, specifically in Canada, 42 percent of students who don’t

attend classes have very low achievement levels (Richwine, 2013). Moreover,

recent studies of children in New York, Chicago and other cities suggest that

attendance may predict a student’s academic progress as effectively as test scores

do, students who cut their classes have long tern harm to their academic progress

(Perez-Pena, 2012). “School is boring,” say about half of American students who

routinely skip. But when asked what they’re doing instead of attending class, most

say they’re just hanging with their friends or sleeping.

A survey recently published at Getschooled.com cities data that as many

as 7 million students, about 15% of the k-12 population are out of school 18 or

more days in a school year. And many of them don’t think that skipping school will

impact their future (Cnn.com.2012).
