Do the students of MWAI get enough physical activity per day?

CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

The amount of physical activity MWAI’s students per day is the subject of this chapter.

We used the survey method to gather information from students from our school, the information we
gathered was compared to what is average to see whether the amount of physical activity that the
students of MWAI do is typical and whether it is enough for a day.

We chose this method because our study revolves around the subjects’ response towards the
questions in our survey. With the results then tallied we were able to make a conclusions by
comparing the results to global averages in order to see the difference between the respondents and
the norm.

The essence of survey method can be explained as “questioning individuals on a topic or topics and

then describing their responses”. In business studies, the survey method of primary data collection is
used in order to tests concepts reflect attitude of people, establish the level of customer satisfaction,
conduct segmentation research and a set of other purposes.

Research tools

We used questionnaires as our tool of gathering data and gathered questions from similar studies
that have been conducted and articles that relate to our study that are found online.

Research environment

The research was conducted in Muir Woods Academy which is located in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.
We aimed to distribute our questionnaires to the Muir Woods Academy High School Department
starting from Grades 7-12 to be exact 5 questionnaires per grade level which corresponds to 30
respondents in total.

Research population

The respondents were chosen from the High School Department (S.Y. 2019-2020) Grades 7 till 12.
The respondents were not limited to only student-athletes.
The age range of the respondents may vary but that information was not essential for this study.

Sampling procedure

-Random Sampling Procedure

According to Korb (2012:1) , in simple random sampling, every individual in the target population has
an equal chance of being part of the sample. This requires two steps:
1. Obtain a complete list of the population.
2. Randomly select individuals from that list for the sample.

The sampling procedure must reflect the unit of analysis. In a study where the unit of analysis is the
student, the researcher must obtain a complete list of every student in the target population to
achieve simple random sampling. Through this method we had a great margin people to be gathered
as respondents and through that we gathered a variety of answers from such a small population of 30
respondents.

Research procedure

We conceptualized the data collectors by first researching about the different intensities of physical
activities and the amount taken to complete each activity, this way it would be easier for us the
researchers to make up a conclusion because the information will just be compared after being
tallied.

The researchers also made approval papers to the school staff and the principal to be able to start
giving out questionnaires and start our research.

The questionnaires were then validated by our Physical Education teacher, who gave this research,
and our school principal, to begin the survey session and distribution of the questionnaires.

We distributed 5 questionnaires to random students from each grade level summing up to a total of
30 respondents.

Conclusion

After we gathered all the data needed to make a conclusion, we then tallied up the results to be able
to compare whether the students of MWAI meet the necessary or average amount of physical activity
in a day for a typical high school student.

Before proceeding with the survey please read the following:

 Light intensity activities require the least amount of effort, compared to moderate and
vigorous activities. Some examples of light physical activities include: walking slowly (i.e.
shopping, walking around the office), sitting at your computer, making the bed, eating,
preparing food, and washing dishes.
 Moderate intensity activities require more oxygen consumption that light activities. Some
examples of moderate physical activities include: sweeping the floor, walking briskly, slow
dancing, vacuuming, washing windows, shooting a basketball.
 Vigorous intensity activities require the highest amount of oxygen consumption to complete
the activity. Examples of vigorous physical activities include: running (5 mph >), swimming,
shoveling, soccer, jumping rope, carrying heavy loads (i.e. bricks).

An easy way to estimate intensity of activities is through a method called the “talk test”. This method
is a simple, practical way for individuals to measure their activity intensity.  If you are doing a
moderate intensity activity, you can talk, but not sing during the activity. If you are doing a vigorous
intensity activity, you will not be able to say more than a few words without taking a breath.

Answer each category by entering how many minutes in day do you spend doing the given activities.
Example: “In a day I would walk for maybe 2 hours in total.” Then answer 120 mins.

a) Walking : ______ mins/per day
b) Doing School Work (requirements, homework etc.) : ______ mins/per day
c) Cleaning (ex: cleaning your classroom or cleaning at home) : ______ mins/per day
d) Climbing stairs : ______ mins/per day
e) Other activities (please specify) _____________ : ______ mins/per day

a) Brisk Walking : ______ mins/per day
b) Jogging : ______ mins/per day
c) Typical Dancing (dancing without sweating) : ______ mins/per day
d) Biking slowly (>16kmh) : ______ mins/per day
e) Other activities (please specify) _____________ : ______ mins/per day
