30 mm for 600 mm of its length; the remainder of the shaft is solid. If the maximum shear
stress () in the steel is not to exceed 70 MN/m2, and the shear modulus (G) of the steel is
82 GN/m2. Find.

a) The Maximum torque that may be applied to the shaft, (8 marks)

b) The total angle of twist of the shaft at maximum torque, expressed in degrees,

4. A column, as shown in the diagram below, has a height of 5 metres. The column is loaded
eccentrically with a force of 10 kN, inclined at 60 degree to the horizontal. The force is

a) Find the position of the neutral axis of the column base; hence find the eccentricity of
the force. (6 marks)
b) Calculate the stresses in the base of the column at points A and B under the eccentric
load. (10 marks)
c) Draw the stress profile of the column base under the above condition. (4 marks)

5. A lift with a mass of 1500 kg is raised to a height of 100 metres by a winding drum of mass
200 kg, radius 250mm, and effective radius of gyration 180 mm. The mass of the wire rope
is 3kg/m. The lift has a constant acceleration of 1.5 m/s2. Calculate:

a) The starting torque at the motor required to raising the lift from a rest position at the
bottom of the lift shaft if the system incorporates a reduction gearbox of ratio 25:1
with an efficiency of 75%. (12 marks)
b) The running torque, i.e. without acceleration, at the motor. (4 marks)

6. A single start square threaded screw jack of mean screw diameter 40mm and having 160
threads per metre is used to move a block in a slide. The nut, which rotates, has a bearing
surface whose mean diameter is 96mm and is connected to a motor by a set of gears. The
block acts against a spring of stiffness 4kN/m. The mass of the block is 20 kg and gear ratio
is 4:1. Find motor torque when the block has moved 100mm. (20 marks)
