The quest for plyboards or alike boards is in constant congruity in ever-increasing to the

demand either for housing and furniture or both purposes. Such material is factory-
made from minute items of wood or by alternative ligno-cellulosic materials by simultaneous use
of organic/inorganic adhesives or glue. Hence, it is widely utilized as building hardware for the
variety uses in grades in relation to its particle sizes.

For several years, Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database
(FAOSTAT) statistically analyzing the importation and production of fiberboard in the
Philippine Islands. In the year 2017, the country has crafted over four thousand cubic meter of
particle boards by trusted companies and industries. Precisely, the outgrowing demand within the
market, initiated few of the companies of uncovering ways just to realize the lacking supply by
any form.

The Forest Management Bureau of the Department of Environment of Natural Resources

(FMB - DENR) asserted that the Philippines is losing forest cover with an approximate 47,000
hectares annually (Cabico, 2018). The effects of deforestation which clears the land of trees with
the industrial and construction use of wood compromises some of the beneficial outcome to
environment to alleviate climate change and the carbon dioxide absorbing effect of trees
(Derouin, 2019).

Typically, on dry season, the Philippines suffers the utmost life-threatening heat in the
day to day living, that is, in every personal homes and outside environment. Thus, heat
insulators are pulled-out to answer the necessity in conveying the thermal conductivity of every
Filipino’s roofs and ceilings. The said material, however, are being tested to insure of that which
and what is productive in terms of cost and efficiency.

Considering, the above prior facts, the researchers came across to examine scholastically
the possibilities to perform studies regarding the short growth cycle,
abundance, nonetheless unsuitable for grazing animal and lack of business applications of Cogon
grass (Imperata cylindrica); where it may be contemplated as an alternative board to substitute
the usage of raw materials like wood for board trade production with its thermal resistance to
heat as an insulator. Additionally, Cogon grass has been identified also as Japgrass, bladygrass,
spear grass, alang-alang, lalang-lalang that can be found in over seventy countries around
the world and it is perennial in existence; noticeable of yellowish-green grass growing on
roadsides and mountainous open space that are mostly in satiated sun.

The chemical composition of cogon grass like silicon oxide has not been
documented within the works and preceding studies. Nevertheless, Dozier and Shilling (2008)
stated that cogon grasses are abundant in silicon oxide and may be accustomed to
manufacture high purity amorphous silicon oxide. The formation of glassy blade in cogon
grass could be a consequence of acid extracted from the soil and its deposit is believed to be in
the blades. However, no further information or knowledge are provided to fortify these
claims. Furthermore, high-purity silicon oxide is also found by removing minerals within
the biomass by acid discharge.

Consequently, this study aimed to maximize the utilization of Imperata cylindrica or

Cogon grass as a thermal heat reducer in our fellow Filipino homes and buildings considering the
kind of climate we tend to have and onwards. Thus, the optimistic outcome of this study will
lead us to product exportation recognized in the market.
