I. Introduction
Additionally, disordered eating issues typically appear during teen years and/or
young adulthood with factors, such as negative body image and poor self-esteem coupled
with stress and depression that contribute to the rise of eating disorder (Campbell, 2018).
This is mainly evident to the college students with due to academic, financial and social
stress – in America alone, 4 – 10% male college students and 10 – 20% female college
students are affected by clinical eating disorders (Affordable College Online, n.d.). The
scenario is worse in the Philippines because with little to no information about eating
disorder, the people’s awareness on this sensitive topic is non-existent (Mia, 2014).
According to the World Health Organization (2010), the food that the person
consumes is central to human health and overall well-being. This is because most of the
nourishment our body needs are in the form of food. However, in this generation, there
are already numerous eating disorders that have affected the health of young people
(Eating Disorder Hope, 2019). Hence, this proposal aims to:
(a) raise awareness among students of the University of San Carlos on some of the
common eating disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa;
(b) encourage everyone to lend a helping hand to anyone who has shown signs and/or
symptoms of having an eating disorder.
III. Proposed Solution
Healthy Eats’ objective will be attained by conducting a seminar about eating
disorders, specifically anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This includes the
symptoms, cause, prevention, and treatment.
This solution is necessary because the best way to solve a psychological issue is
through communication. Inviting speakers who have overcome their challenges from
eating disorders and doctors who are expert about eating disorders will greatly affect, in
a positive way, to those who are suffering from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
This gathering will raise awareness to those who lack the knowledge about the different
types of eating disorders and how it greatly affects people, especially students. This
gathering will let the public know that eating disorders are not to be taken lightly.
IV. Methodology
To address the concern in eating disorder, Healthy Eats will conduct a seminar
to the students of University of San Carlos in Cebu City. The organizers together with the
speakers will raise awareness among students and encourage them to help others who
have eating disorder.
Before the Seminar
Linkages. The team will send a letter to the Department of Health to aid the
community extension department to finance the necessary materials, manpower, and
other fees for the seminar.
Venue. The secretary will conduct an ocular visit at the University of San Carlos to
inspect the site and will coordinate with institution to obtain access to conduct a seminar
particularly in an audio-visual room.
Guests Invitations. The team will invite persons who has experienced an eating
disorder or a doctor who is knowledgeable about the issue to give ideas to the students
who have eating disorder on how to battle it and improve in life.
Materials. The Financial manager will purchase the necessary materials including
the token and small infographic poster about the seminar. The project manager will lead
in creating the presentation to be used during the seminar.
During Seminar
The project manager will check if all the preparations are complete which includes
registration area, sound system, lights, venue set-up, and presentations. Speakers will
discuss about the different eating disorders to the participants. Current demographics in
Cebu, Philippines, and the world will be shown through a video presentation. The
speakers will also tackle about how eating disorder affects people especially the students.
The speaker then shares experiences to give advice on how to combat eating disorders
to students. After that, the speaker concludes the seminar and allow participants to ask
some questions to the speaker to give clarifications about the seminar.
After Seminar
Students will be asked to give feedback about the seminar by answering a survey
in regards with eating disorder to make sure that the participants understood the
discussions and to also give idea on how to improve the project for future endeavors.
Small infographic posters will be given to the participants that will summarize the entire
discussion of the seminar.
V. Call to Action
Healthy Eats encourages everyone, particularly students of University of San
Carlos, to seek professional help and guidance when their eating disorder does not seem
to get better. By this, their dilemmas would be coped up with, and they would know how
to handle a relapse situation. Not only that, but it would motivate them to do and feel
better. We also invite them to feel free to contact us whenever they want and can. For
inquiries, they may visit our website at www.healthyeats.org.
