Impact of Livelihood Projects 1

On Financial Status of Women Beneficiaries

CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

Introduction

Livelihood is a mean of making a living. It encompasses people’s capabilities, assets,

income and activities required to secure the necessities of life. It is sustainable since it

enables people to cope with and recover from shocks and stresses, such as natural disasters

and economic or social upheavals, and enhances their well-being and that of future

generations without undermining the natural environment or resource base.

This study is an investigation into the impact and contribution of income generating

projects on financial status of every women beneficiaries. It specifically sought to look at

women’s livelihood project in the area, evaluating the income generating projects related to

livelihood project. Livelihood project or income generating project is one of the ways to

help solved financial crisis. Livelihood projects activities range from agricultural production,

beautifications etc.

Earning a livelihood in rural areas is considerably more complex and difficult

because of inaccessibility, fragility and vulnerability arising from topographical complexity,

altitudinal gradient and poor physical and socioeconomic infrastructure. (Jodha 2005; Rasul

and Kollmair 2010)

Women in Bislig, like any other counter parts of other of developing countries, are

mostly involved in food production to feed their families. The main activity of women in

rural community is mainly participating in agricultural production namely; cocoa, oil, palm,

rubber, coffee. These crops serve as sources of revenue for the government. Women also are

involved in agro-forestry production particularly around the rural compound and farm stead.

Statement of the Problem

1. Do livelihood projects help in financial aspects in every women beneficiaries?

2. Do livelihood projects sustain the basic needs of the Women’s families?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study seeks to understand the variety of instances of livelihood projects’ impact

financially to the family of every women beneficiary. The research work sets out to study

women of different occupations. The researchers also set up surveys on beneficiaries of the

livelihood program the DSWD given.

Moreso, the study’s scope covers only the Bislig community. A number of livelihood

programs that make up Bislig community were outlined and sampled for the study, and

women were only selected via stratified sampling for the study in order to fulfil the study.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant to the following groups:

Unemployed - the study will therefore inform the unemployed that livelihood

projects can have a contribution or impact to the financial status of their family.

Bislig community- through this study, local sponsors will be educated about the

contribution of livelihood projects’ network to the community’s economy in Bislig City.

Nation- the study will improve the awareness of individual and groups not to limit

the livelihood projects. This will, in turn, improves the standard of living and add to national

development and a successive economy of human race.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Well-beingis best conceptualized within a livelihood’s framework. A livelihood is defined as

“the activities, the assets and the access that jointly determine the living gained by an

individual or household” (Ellis, 2003).

Fundamental to the livelihood approach is the asset or resource status of living

individuals and households. Assets provide capabilities for achieving satisfactory levels of

living. Typically this means that the household is the unit of analysis, whereby the

household and its corresponding resource profile is located within the context of the wider

vulnerability environment, the context of social vulnerabilities such as age, ethnic, status,

gender that casually impact how livelihood are constructed and adopted, and within their

policy and institutional context. Rural livelihood diversification is defined as the process by

which household construct an increasingly diverse portfolio of activities and assets in order

to service and improves their standard of living or well-being.

Young (1995) argued the concept of empowerment as use of development agencies

refers mainly to entrepreneurial self- reliance. Taking a critical view of the use of

empowerment technology by development agencies.

A study entitled empowerment of women in South Asia identifies two approaches

commonly used by development agencies shows that empowerment through economic

intervention to increase women’s economic status through employment, income generation

and access to credit an empowerment through integrated rural development programs, in

which strengthening women’s economic status is only one component along with Education,

literacy, the provision of basic needs and services and fertility control.
Impact of Livelihood Projects 6
On Financial Status of Women Beneficiaries

Onu, (1998) editorialized that women are the heal of development. They control

most of the non-money economy and taking important part in the money. He further stressed

that everywhere world, women have two jobs around the home and outside it. This assertion

implies that women have a lot in of contribution to make towards the healthy socio-

economic development of every country but women are constantly denied this opportunity

by the nature of our societal organizations and the cultural set up that makes it more

comfortable for men to maintain the status quo.

Much of the current focus on livelihood projects is due to the emergence of concepts

such as social vulnerability and resilience, and to increasing awareness of these concepts

within conservation organizations. Livelihood projects are suggested to have the potential to

reduce vulnerability and increase the social resiliency of communities (Neely, 2007)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods to be used in the study. It also describes the

subjects of the study, the instruments used, and the procedure of data gathering and the

statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study used survey method, which includes questionnaires and checklists. The

researchers also gathered data from the institutions to help in decision-making regarding

change strategies. The researchers survey the respondents personally.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers had chosen randomly the respondents of the study from DSWD

Livelihood Project’s beneficiaries. The researchers only chose some respondents.

Setting of the Study

Impact of Livelihood Projects 8
On Financial Status of Women Beneficiaries

This study was conductedin Bislig City community since the respondents were set

inside the Bislig Community.

Research Instruments

In this study, the researchers used a Likert Scale-type survey made by the researchers.

This survey questionnaire helped them identify the impacts of women in community and in

economic growth through livelihood projects.

Data Gathering Procedure

The following procedures were undertaken in the gathering of the data used in the

study:

1. Seeking approval in conducting the study- The researchers wrote permission letter to

the DSWD Head for the information regarding the study that was conducted pertaining to

the impact the impact of livelihood projects on financial status in women beneficiaries.

2. Informed Consent- The researchers wrote permission letter to the head of women worker

in every livelihood project informing them that their women workers will be part of a study

about the impact oflivelihood projects on financial status in women beneficiaries.

3. Administration and retrieval of questionnaires- The researchers distributed the survey

questionnaires they had made to all the women beneficiaries. The respondents were assessed

promptly and were given clear instructions in answering the survey questionnaires. After

they finished answering, the survey questionnaires were retrieved for the next step.

4. Evaluating, Tabulating and Processing of the Data- After collecting the survey

questionnaires, the researchers then evaluated it for checking purposes and then tabulated

the answers to come up with a specific data. The data gathered will then be processed using

statistical method to be interpreted by the researchers.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The responses of the respondents to the survey questionnaires were carefully tallied,

tabulated and organized. The data were presented, analyzed and interpreted with the used of

weighted mean, frequency, counts percentage and ranking system.

The presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data will be based on the weighted mean

as shown by the scale ranges as follow:

For Percentage computation is:

F= Frequency

N= total number of respondents

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter describes the analysis of data followed by a discussion of the

interpretation of data. The findings relates to the research questions that guided the study.

Data were analyzed to identify, describe and explore the Impact of Livelihood Projects on

Financial Status of Women Beneficiaries. Data were obtained from survey questionnaires,

completed by 24 beneficiaries.

A total of 24 questionnaires were distributed and met the required inclusion criteria

as discussed in the previous chapter. This represented 100% of the expected population. The

high response to surveys about Impact of Livelihood ProjectsOn Financial Status of Women

Beneficiaries may be a partial explanation for the high response rate in this study.
