Surveyors must also perform field staking for any mass grading, building
offsets for construction, utilities (water mains, storm sewers and sanitary
sewers), as well as any streets, curbs, or gutters and parking lots, All of these
must be completed before the surveyor begins to stake the proposed
buildings on the property.
In many ways, site layout staking can be seen as the opposite of the as-built
survey. An as-built survey assesses a building or project after it is completed
to ensure that is was built according to the design plans. Construction staking
is performed at the beginning of the project to make sure that the project is
built according to plan. Having good construction staking will lead to a good
as-built survey.
