WHAT ARE THE ADVERTISING AGENCIES???
“Advertising agency is a business that assists advertisers in all stages of the
advertising process - from account management and planning to message
creation, media planning, and research.”

(Bergh & Katz, 1999)

“Advertising agencies are service companies that specialize in planning and

execution of advertising programs for their clients.”

(Belch & Belch, 1990)

“An advertising agency acts on the basis of an assignment placed by the

client in which the client also delegates some decision making authority to
the agency.”

(Mills, 1990)

“In most cases the agency makes the creative and media decisions. Often it
supplies supporting market research as well, and may even be involved in
the total marketing plan. The activities undertaken and the amount of
autonomy allowed to the agency vary from one relationship to another.”

(Aaker & Myers, 1987)

“Advertising services can be defined as packages of activities that are

offered to other companies and which concern the planning, production and /
or delivery of advertising. Advertising services are bought and designed to
improve the purchasing company's performance and well-being.”

(Wilson, 1982)

Saatchi & Saatchi Company Profile

This advertising firm is so nice, they named it twice. Saatchi & Saatchi is one
of the world's top advertising agency networks, with more than 150 offices in
about 85 countries. It provides creative advertising services and plans
marketing campaigns for some of the largest advertisers and top global
brands. Its Saatchi & Saatchi X agency acts primarily as a shopper's
marketing services network in the US, while its The Facilities Group segment
specializes in technical and creative services in audiovisual and print areas
for the UK market. Founded in the UK by Maurice and Charles Saatchi in
1970, Saatchi & Saatchi is part of Paris-based advertising conglomerate
Publics.
SALARIES
Saatchi & Saatchi salary & compensation reviews include all signing
and year-end bonuses, vacation time and other perks and
reimbursements that make up total compensation.

SPEEDY GROWTH

The flamboyant Saatchi brothers, Maurice and Charles set up the business in
the early 1970s and during the growth years gave the company a distinctive
edge over competitors. With their close association to the then Prime
Minister and a host of high-society names, the brothers led the agency on a
whirlwind buying spree. But the speed of their growth created the conditions
for their own downfall, as the task of absorbing the new companies became
ever more difficult. The bust, which followed the late 80s boom, exposed
gaping debts at the agency, hitting the company's share price hard.
Frenchman Robert Louis-Dreyfus was appointed to turn around the ailing
group. He largely succeeded and has since gone on to further glory as the
chairman of Adidas sportswear group.

RIVAL FIRM

It was five years ago, when their role was largely marginal, that the Saatchi
brothers finally left the company. Maurice convinced some top executives
and some leading clients, notably British Airways, to leave with him and set
up a competing agency. He was joined by the creative force behind his
former company, brother Charles. The brothers still run M and C Saatchi
agency, which retains BA and a number of other high-profile British clients.
In 1995 the restructured group had been pooled with US merger partner
Bates Worldwide and renamed Cordiant. It was demerged from Cordiant in
December 1997 with the Saatchi and Saatchi name since remaining high
profile, if no longer the biggest in the industry.
DAMIEN HIRST

Saatch is increasingly focused on the US, where it now gets nearly three
quarters of its operating profits. Its biggest clients include Proctor and
Gamble, Toyota Motor Cars, DuPont and Sony. The merger will create the
world's fifth largest agency, by bringing together the world's 10th largest,
Publicis, with the world's 12th biggest. The new French owners say they will
continue to use the Saatchi name, one which is one of the best known in late
20th Century UK business as a whole. As to the brothers who founded it,
Maurice is the Conservative Party treasury spokesman in the House of Lords,
while Charles has become well known as a patron of the arts, with his
Saatchi Gallery emerging as the cradle of young British artists such as
Damien Hirst. Saatchi and Saatchi earned pre-tax profits of £38.6m ($58m)
on sales of £400m last year.

Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide does advertising by the book. Founded by ad

pioneer David Ogilvy (author of Ogilvy on Advertising), the firm is one of the
world's leading creative agency networks, providing advertising campaign
development and management, brand development, public relations, and
strategic planning services to clients such as American Express, IBM,
and Motorola. Ogilvy & Mather offers specialized communications and
relationship marketing services through Ogilvy One; its Ogilvy
CommonHealth Worldwide unit offers services targeted for global clients in
the health care industry. Operating through more than 450 offices around
the world, it is one of the primary agency subsidiaries of UK-based WPP
Group.

What has always defined Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide is its ability to build
brands.

The difference is that building brands today requires a keen understanding of

how new communications technology, new channels, and vibrant creativity
combine. This is a world where the consumer is now in control, and
consumer insight is paramount, and so the quality and diversity of our
people are vital. A contemporary outlook and true cultural attunement are
much more important in a world where there is a new mandate for our
business. That mandate is integrated communications and our response,
what we call 360 Degree Brand Stewardship® , means a willingness to use
the broadest array of tools and techniques to understand, develop and
enhance the relationship between a consumer and a brand.

We do this on both a local and a global scale. Local 360 Degree Brand
Stewardship® keeps the agency fully rooted in the marketplace, attracting
top local clients and the best people to work on them. This keeps our
understanding of the local consumer and marketplace intimate.

Global 360 Degree Brand Stewardship® is a marriage of local know-how with

a worldwide network capable of articulating brands as they cross borders -
vital to the growing number of multinational clients seeking to leverage their
powerful brands in new markets around the world.

needs of major customers. Small companies can compete by focusing on

CONTROVERSY
Absolut Vodka controversy
In April 2008 Teran/TBWA of Mexico released a controversial advertisement
for Absolut Vodka depicting a fictional "perfect world" dubbed "absolut
world" depicting the larger Mexico as it existed before the 19th
century Mexican-American War which includes areas now part of the United
States (including California and Texas). Absolut apologized for the
advertisement and withdrew it following complaints from American
consumers.
Pincha la Rueda de Hamilton
Pincha la Rueda de Hamilton (Burst Hamilton's tires), a Spanish website run
by TBWA, was set up in October 2008. It hosted a game where users could
leave objects on a race track to stop the then Formula One leader, Lewis
Hamilton, from winning the last grand prix of the year in Brazil. It became
controversial when Spanish users began to leave racist comments (such as
"half-breed") aimed at the mixed-race Hamilton and was shut down in
November. The FIA, the sport's governing body, and Hamilton's
team, McLaren, condemned the comments as "abusive and hateful".
Taco Bell Chihuahua
In 1997 TBWA developed the Chihuahua campaign for Taco Bell. Two
Michigan men, represented by Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, who had earlier
pitched the concept to Taco Bell sued and in 2003 a jury awarded them
$US30 million in damages and a judge tacked on $US12 million in interest.
Taco Bell in turn sued TBWA saying it should have been aware of the
conflicts. In 2009 a three-judge federal appeals panel ruled against Taco Bell.
Haagen-Dazs India
In December 2009, TBWA developed the campaign for Haagen-Dazs Ice
Cream in India. Several banners were put up that said "Exclusive Preview for
International Travelers - Access restricted only to holders of international
passports". Instead of portraying exclusivity, this was perceived negatively
due to India's long history of colonialism where access to certain areas was
restricted to the white colonizers from Britain. Haagen-Dazs cut ties with
TBWA after the negative publicity generated due to that incident.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

experienced advertising agency network. With operations in over 110

Erickson has been recognized as the creator of the modern global
advertising agency model.

McCann Erickson's worldwide strength is founded on its strong local roots in

all regions of the world. Its global resources, combined with its vast local
expertise, have made McCann Erickson a top five agency in almost every
market in which it operates. While McCann celebrated its U.S.-based
centennial in 2002, it has also operated on the ground with major market
agencies in Europe for more than 75 years, in Latin America for 70 years,
and in Asia Pacific for 45 years. Thus it is not surprising that McCann has
been named 'Global Agency of the Year' multiple times by major trade
publications, while many of its agencies are regularly honored as 'Agency of
the Year' in their own markets.

At the heart of McCann Erickson's powerful combination of local market, pan-

and most sophisticated in the world. For many years it has been a consistent
winner of awards celebrating effective advertising, including the EFFIEs and
AME awards.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Demand is driven largely by the construction needs of companies and
governments and the desire of industrial customers to improve the efficiency
of operations. Profitability depends on the ability to accurately predict
costs for a project. Small firms, which can effectively compete with larger
ones by having expertise in a particular field, are often hired as consultants
on larger projects if they have special expertise. Large firms are advantaged
in designing and managing large projects.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Demand for advertising and marketing services comes largely from
businesses that sell consumer products, entertainment, financial services,
technology, and telecommunications. The profitability of individual
companies depends on creative skills and maintaining client
relationships. Large companies benefit from being able to serve the varied
needs of major customers. Small companies can compete by focusing on
niche markets or by offering lower pricing. New competition for advertising
and marketing business has come from database marketing companies,
systems integrators, and telemarketers.
