CCHAPTER 3
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

As it is indicated in the title, this chapter includes the research methodology of

the study. In more details in this part, the researchers outlines the research
Design, the research setting, the research respondents, the research
instruments, the research procedures, the data gathering and the treatment of
the data.
Research Design
The research study focuses on the efficacy of Mango Peelings as an organic
fertilizer for the growth and yield performance of F1 Tomato. The research study
applies quantitative research since it involves to classify features, seeks precise
measurements, construct statistical models, analyzes and collects numerical
data. The researchers undergo experimentation on this research study through
investigations of the experimental group that the independent variable will be
applied unto the dependent variable and analyzes it's effects. The researchers
intentionally alters one or more factors to study the effects of the dependent
variable. On the other hand, on the controlled group, the independent variable
will not be administered to the dependent variable. Both groups are measured
on the same dependent variable. Manipulation is involved through the process
by which researchers purposefully change, alter, or influence the independent
variables which are also called treatment variables or factors, in an experimental
research design. This process allows researchers to explore casual relationships
between Independent variable and dependent variables, which are also referred
to as outcome of interest in a particular study. Specifically, manipulation of an
Independent variable allows researchers to explore whether the Independent
variable causes change in a study of the dependent variable. In experimental
research, it is important to confirm that results of a study are actually due to an
independent or manipulated variable. In the simplest case, a research study
contrasts two groups, and the independent variable is present in one group but
not the other which is the control group. As an experimental type of research,
the efficacy of the output that is presented will be satisfied in using Mango
Peelings as an organic fertilizer for the growth and development of F1 Tomato
and in the behavior of the both groups with or without be administered by the
fertilizer.
Research Setting
The research study will be conducted at the Lomboy, Abucayan, one of the
barangay in the municipality of Balamban. The place that is being settled is one
of the researcher's house backyard in which the required soil and atmosphere of
the place is satisfied. The preparation of the experimentation will be taken care
by the researchers in which two (2) plant pots will be arranged and be settled in
a specific location of the place where life-giving factors such as sunlight and open
air can properly benefit the dependent variable. The first plant pot (with Mango
Peelings) will be in the Experimental group in which the independent variable
will be administered unto the dependent variable and performs the process of
manipulation where results will be observed if the independent variable causes
change within the dependent variable. On the other hand is the second plant pot
(without Mango Peelings) which is in the control group where the dependent
variable will be observed without the presence of the independent variable.
Research Respondents

The subject of interest of the research study is the F1 Tomato in which it undergo
investigation and observation.
Research Instruments
The research instrument is formed as a tool be used to collect, measure, and
analyze data investigation in order to achieve a successful research study.
1. Observation
The researchers keeps on providing information in the way of every even
alternate days ( Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday ) investigation and observation
from the study that is being conducted. The factor especially the changes of the
day-to-day condition of the weather may be affecting the growth and health
performance of the F1 Tomato. The primary concern of this instrument was to
make sure that the F1 Tomato's growth will be maintained and studied
scientifically.
2. Experimentation
This part of the study is the most important in validating if the hypothesis of the
said research study is right or wrong. The independent variable that is applied
on the study will only be the organic fertilizer which is the mango peelings that
will be utilized by the experimental group. There will be 15 sample seeds of F1
Tomato that will be planted on the each plant plots. The treatment of Plant pots
were as follows:
T1 = F1 Tomato seeds with Mango Peeling Fertilizer
T1 = F1 Tomato seeds without Mango Peeling Fertilizer
The observation will be keenly maintained even on the day the seedlings were
planted in order to see changes and evolution of the F1 Tomato in the
Experimental group with the fertilizer and Control group without the presence of
the fertilizer. With proper observation, the height of the plant, the size of the
leaves, the color of the plant and the stems that it produces will be investigated
and recorded in the research. Orion Ruler and camera will be the devices that
are used in recording the data of the experimentation.
Research Procedures

The research study will be observed attentively. The main aim of the
experimentation is to make F1 Tomato survive and sustain its needs in order to
lead the research study into success. The first step is to find a suitable location
wherein the plant can benefit better atmosphere. Both the plant pots are placed
equally in terms of life-sustaining factors regardless of the location they are
putted. Both the plant pots are watered in even days ( Tuesday, Thursday,
Saturday ) from a little amount of water since the first day, and the growing
amount of water as the plant grows. The soil will also be cultivated every Sunday.
The mango peelings are only utilized by the experimental group within the first
plant pot, while the second plant pot from the control group will be still and
remain the same without any fertilizers that are putted in it. The observations
and investigations of the growth of the plant will be observed until the yield
performance will be noticed.
Data Gathering

Data Gathering is essential in doing the research study of gathering and

measuring information on experimentation that is performed by the researchers,
to establish systematic results that enables the researchers to answer stated
research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes. In doing the
gathering, it involves proper observation of the plant. The process will take at
least 6 weeks and during the observation, the gathering of data will happen in
every even alternate days ( Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday ). The researchers are
to measure the height of the plant, count the number of leaves and branches,
and observe the color of the leaves. The researcher must do the gathering
properly in order to have accurate results and outcomes.
Treatment of Data
After the data will be gathered, the information and results will be presented
through graphical methods. Averaging method will be used in order to make the
analysis easier especially when dealing with time. In this method, all the data
will be added and be divided by the total number of observations to get the
average.
Statistical method will also be applied in this particular research study in order
to identify the growth and development, health and yield performance of the F1
Tomato with both groups that are used in the experimentation.
