Introduction to ZTE ZXSDR BS8700/8900
The Software Defined Radio Base Stations (SDR) adopt innovative distributed
structure, unified MicroTCA platform, and multi-carrier technologies to
significantly boost system integration and efficiency, as well as network
convergence and evolution capabilities. ZXSDR series base stations support
multi-mode, multi-band wireless operation through software configuration.
Allows powerful evolution to LTE.

It consists of two parts: BBU and RRU/RSU, which can be used either indoors
or outdoors. Such distributed base station architecture allows flexible site
selection, zero footprint, extended coverage, and baseband pool in
high-traffic scenarios.

ZXSDR BS8700/BS8900 allows dual mode GSM+

UMTS service deployment

Concepts About Distributed Base Station

„ It is baseband data that is tranmitted between BBU and RRU. Both

intermediate frequency and radio frequency are processed in RRU.
„ BBU and RRU transmits data through optical fiber, significantly
simplifying project construction.
„ Concept of baseband pool. Node B capacity increases.

„ Cabling Principles

z If the equipment room is equipped with racks and antistatic floorboards,

use downward cabling mode. If upward cabling mode is used, need to
install a cabling rack/cabling ladder at the upper part of the cabinet and
route the cables in the cabling rack.
z Cabling position should be designed in advance. The cables should be
arranged orderly, and their skin should not be damaged.
z External cables include power cables, tail fibers, trunk cables, and other
signal cables. Cables in the cabling rack should be categorized and
bundled, should not be crossed each other. Cables should be fixed by
cable ties. Bundling interval should be 20 cm.
z Bending position of each cable should be even and smooth. The
minimum bending radius = 60 mm.
z Cables should be bundled orderly and straightly. Cable ties should be
distributed at regular intervals, and tightened moderately.

© 2006, ZTE Corporation. All rights reserved.

z Cables in a cabling trough may not be bundled. Cables in a cabling
trough should be straight, not cross each other, and not overflow the
trough. Cables should be bundled at the entrance and exit of the cabling
trough and at the turning positions.
z Trunk cables routed from the cabinet to the cable terminal rack should
not be strained. Redundant cables should not be cut. In a cabling trough
or in a movable floor, cables leading to different cabinets should be
bundled separately from eachother. Cables should be straight and
ordered, not cross each other. Their skin should not be damaged. If
necessary, reserve additional length for the cables.
z Cable should be affixed with corresponding labels. Every label should be
affixed 2 cm away from one end of the cable. Label indicates the
destinations of both ends: cabinet number plus slot number plus socket
number.
z The cables should be routed to facilitate maintenance and future
expansion capacity.

Checking Installation

„ Cabinet installation location complies with the engineering design.

„ Cabinet is installed in a stable and secure manner.
„ Cabinet vertical deviation ≤2mm
„ Cabinet surface is clean and tidy, with no paint loss. If paint is loss,
cabinet must be repainted with adequate paint for outdoor use, in
the same color as cabinet.
„ All screws are tightly screwed. The flat washers or spring washers
are in place.
„ All cables are laid flat and smooth.
„ Cable bending is smooth.

RRU Installation
•Hoist RRU and OLP/LPU to Tower

If it is required to hoist RRU and/or OLP/LPU to the tower or a building

terrace:

ƒNatural conditions for hoisting operation are satisfied, such as no fog

and high visibility. The hoisting operation is prohibited in windy, snowy,
or rainy days.
ƒTools for hoisting operation are available, such as the rope (with a
bearing capacity of 100 kg) and the crown block; the crown block is
firmly installed in appropriate position on the tower.
ƒOpen the package to check whether the cabinet is
in good condition.
ƒHoist the cabinet to the tower after the inspection:
1. Take out the cabinet, make its fixing board
upwards, and lay it on the floor
2. Bind the fixing board with rope. Make sure that the
rope is bound on the two fixing boards, and the
binding is firm

3. Two persons stand at the foot of the tower.
One pulls the rope slowly, the other one
releases the rope slowly and prevents the
cabinet from touching the tower

WARNING

•RRU handle can not be used for binding

the hoisting rope.
•It is strictly prohibited to use steel wire rope
as the hoisting rope.
•During hoisting procedure, irrelevant
person is prohibited to stand surrounding
the tower, especially under the RRU/OLP.

• Fix RRU to Antenna Support

1. Install pole anchor clamp

components.

i. Fix anchor clamps onto the

pole, and align the anchor
clamp holes and screw the
bolts a bit;
ii. Adjust the space between the
clips based on the screw's

and fix the RRU supporting
panel on the clips at the front
bracket with M8 bolts and
tighten it properly;
iii. Screw down M10 bolts tightly.

The installation height of antenna on the tower is
determined by network planning design.
„ Azimuth
The azimuth/bearing of the antenna is determined by
network planning design.
„ Down tilt
The downtilt angle of the antenna is determined by
network planning design. Usually the mechanical
down tilt angle is 0°~10°adjustement made by
Fastener B. Aditional downtilt is provided trough
electric down tilt mechanism from 0° to 8°
„ Direction
Antenna direction depends on the antenna azimuth. If
two antennas in same sector, must share the same
azimuth.

and prepare the jumpers. Consider that if the site requires up-tilt, the antennas
must be installed reversed.
•Connect the jumper connector to the antenna port, and tighten it properly.

Waterproof Treatment for Connectors
z Seal the jumper connector and antenna port for waterproof treatment. 1
layer of vinyl electrical tape -3 layers of waterproof nylon adhesive tape
(mastic tape)– 3 layers of PVC insulating tape.
„ Wrap the waterproof adhesive tapes to lower side of connectors. Keep
wrapping direction same as the one that the jumper is tightened.
„ While wrapping, extend the adhesive tapes to double their length. Note that
every wrapping layer must be overlapped the previous layer by half the width
of the tape Wrapping must be extended up to 50 mm (2 inches) away from
jumper connector position.
„ Grip the tape with the hands to make the tape tightly adhered and prevent air
bubbles
„ Wrap PVC tapes on top of the waterproof adhesive tape. During the process,
make sure the upper layer overlaps the lower layer by half the width of the
tape.
