Respondent A

Benedict: Good morning madam, how are you today?

Teacher A: I'm fine thank you.

Benedict: Today I will be asking you several questions for my assignment on Culture and
Learning.

Teacher A: Sure, you may ask, I will try to provide you the best answers.

Benedict: Okay madam, I will ask you questions regarding the importance of understanding
the concept of diverse ethnic groups and cultures in the classroom and how you as teacher
attend the group diversity in your teaching?

Teacher A: For me, I used to teach in Kapit and most of the student are Iban. So, it is
something new for me because it was my first time to be posted to a place where the
majority of the local people are Iban and Orang Ulu. As a teacher, I think we should always
be aware about our students culture and customs. We also need to avoid steoreotyping our
students. Most of the new teacher will start to stereotypping their students, and we need to
avoid that.

Benedict: What else do you think a teacher should do to create a diverse classroom?

Teacher A: I believe that most of us expecially teacher, we have our own ideas or
perceptions on our students. For example, we will differetiated our student based on their
culture or ethnicity. Those ideology should be erase if we want to understand the concept of
diversity. We should be understanding our student cultural and also their differences.

Benedict: Okay, that was an eye opening answer. Surely it will help me later when I got
posted. Then, what do you always do to create a fun learning environment in a diverse
classroom?

Teacher A: It depend on the situation Ben, sometimes we can used different type of
approaches to create a fun learning environment but I usually use group work or cooperative
learning. The students seem to love it, and based on my observation they share their views
better when sitted with their friends from different ethnic although they have problem in
communicating as they tend to use their mother tongue.

Benedict: okay I see. Moving on to the last question. What do you think the benefits of
having a diverse classroom?
Teacher A: I see it as something postive. Student with different culture can share their
differences and some of them tend to be more understanding. They like to talked about their
differences and sometimes they share similarities. It is something amazing actually to see
students share their differences with their friends.

Benedict: Thank You so much Madam for they time spending your time with me. I
appreaciate it a lot.

Teacher A: You are most welcome Ben.

Culture and learning.

Benedict: I will ask you questions regarding the importance of understanding the concept of
diverse ethnic groups and cultures in the classroom and how you as teacher attend the
group diversity in your teaching?

Teacher B: That is a good question to ask. As a teacher, we need to ask ourselves first what
do we know about diversity. We need to explore it first by understanding our own culture so
that we will become aware of biases that might affect our students. That is my answer.

Benedict: What else do you think a teacher should do to create a diverse classroom?

Teacher B: By communicating with our student is very important. By doing so we can create
interpersonal relationships with our students. We should be their role model by instilling all
the moral values of unity in diversity. With that, students will know their peers better.

Benedict: What do you always do to create a fun learning environment in a diverse

classroom?

environment. On the same time, it will help them to improve their social skills and also
enhance their cultural awareness.
