What is grounded theory research?

• Grounded theory refers both to the method and the end result of
the research process.
• Grounded theory methodology
……consists of a specific set of procedures for carving out the inbuilt
middle-range theory from and with the help of empirical data.

• According to grounded theory approach,

……theory evolves during actual research and it does this through
continuous interplay between analysis and data collection.

Grounded theory research

and theory building
• Grounded theory methodology
……a highly developed idea consisting of a set of
formally named and described procedures.
These procedures are the key and the tools for
producing a theory of social phenomena through the
analysis of empirical data.
……uses both induction and deduction supported by
verification during the process of theory development.

The rationale of grounded theory

methodology
Case studies and grounded theory methodology
Case studies can be used for different aims, not only for
providing description or testing theories, but also for
generating theories.

For its aim in THEORY GENERATION, grounded

theory methodology can be very useful.

Key elements and processes

• Grounded theory methodology requires “a concept-

indicator model of analysis” which in turn uses the
method of constant comparison.

• The theory generation takes place through the possible

relationship between the concepts and sets of concepts, and
exploration of these tentative theories or theoretical
propositions through additional or existing data.

Key elements and processes

• After tentative theories or theoretical propositions

arise, it need to be tested using a method called
“theoretical sampling”
• i.e., verifying it through additional data.

• In this process, the coding of data is important.

Key elements and processes

The coding process in the grounded theory

approach:
 Open coding;
 Axial coding; and
 Selective coding.

Writing and evaluation of grounded

theory research

• A grounded-theory-based research project usually

evolves with a tentative literature to begin with .
• The evaluation criteria:
 Fit, workability, relevance, and modifiability [Glaser&Strauss];
 Credibility, originality, resonance, and usefulness [Charmaz];
