This document is an unclassified guide to Soviet Navy surface ships and covers most
classes of surface ships operated by the Navy. It is believed that publication of this infor-
mation at the unclassified level will enhance its utility by insuring its dissemination to the
widest possible audience. For Soviet Navy order of battle, readers are referred to the
Unclassified Communist Naval Orders of Battle, DDB-1200-124-series. For explanations
of ship types, see the Glossary of Naval Ship Types, DDB-1200-47-series. Other unclas-
sified publications that readers may find useful are the Soviet Submarine Recognition
Guide, DDB-1220-15-series, and Understanding Soviet Naval Developments, NAVSO P-
3560 (Rev. 1/81).
This publication could not have been produced without the cooperation and assistance
of Mr. A.D. Baker, III, of the Naval Intelligence Support Center (NISC), who provided
all of the information on technical characteristics. Particular thanks are duc to Mr. John
R. Lewis, also of NISC, for the loan of many photographs. Appreciation for photog
raphy is also due to Mr. Robert A. Carlisle, head of the Still Photo Branch of the Navy
Office of Information, and to Mrs. Patty M. Maddocks and Mrs. Dorothy Sappington of
the Photographic Library of the US Naval Institute. Special thanks are due to LT
Richard R. Burgess, USN, and LT Bruce G. Martin, USN, of the Defense Intelligence
Agency (Fleet Operations and Special Programs Section) for providing the primary
recognition features. The tedious chore of screening several hundred photographs for use
in this document was performed by CDR William K. Boland, USNR-R, LCDR Michael
C. Buzas, USNR-R, and LCDR Ernest C. Milner, USNR-R. The Defense Intelligence
Agency takes full responsibility for any errors in this publication
