MAINTENANCE OF KEYBOARD AND FLOPPY DISK DRIVE

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT: To study about the maintenance of key

board and floppy disk drive.

EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED: Keyboard and a floppy disk drive

THEORY:

Keyboard: The set of typewriter-like keys that enables you to

enter data into a computer. Computer keyboards are similar to electric-
typewriter keyboards but contain additional keys. The keys on computer
keyboards are often classified as follows:
1. alphanumeric keys: letters and numbers
2. punctuation keys : comma, period, semicolon, and so on.
3. special keys : function keys, control keys, arrow keys, Caps
Lock key, and so on.

Floppy Disk Drive: A floppy disk drive is a hardware device that reads
one of the first types of portable data storage media such as floppy
diskettes, also known as floppy disks.

Hardware maintenance:

Excessive Heat can destroy the chips inside the computer. To avoid this,
install an adequate fan in the power supply or add an auxiliary fan.

Dust: Dust is everywhere and is responsible for several evils in a

computer. First, it sticks to the internal components like the circuit
boards, causing thermal insulation. The second dust evil is that it clogs
spaces such as the air intake area to the power supply or hard disk, and
the space between the floppy disk drive head and the disk. Therefore it’s
very much necessary to clean the computer once in a week.

Magnetism: Magnets can cause permanent loss of data on hard or floppy

disks. Therefore we should not keep mobile phones or telephone or any
electrical motor near the computer.

Power surges, incorrect line voltage, and power outages: Power

problems can be caused by overvoltage and under voltage. Overvoltage
can damage a chip because too much voltage destroys the circuits. Under
voltage is undesirable because the power supply will draw too much
current. This heats up and destroys components.
Water and corrosive agents: Liquids can be very hazardous to the
computer's health.

PROCEDURE:

Maintenance of key board:

Keeping a keyboard clean is key to prolonging their lives. Never place

drinks (coffee, soda, tea, and so on) around a keyboard; spilling liquids is
a common cause of keyboard failures. Here are a few tips to increase the
life of a keyboard:

• Use a hand-held vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the small

crevasses.
• Never use spray cleaners.

Maintenance of Floppy Disk Drive:

Floppy disk drives are highly susceptible to failure. This is due mostly to
the fact that they are exposed to the environment (through the disk slot)
and are prone to mechanical damage from inserting and removing the
disk. When they fail, the best solution is usually to replace them because
they are inexpensive and simple to install. Here are a few tips to increase
the life of floppy drives and disks:

• Do not expose the disks to magnets.

• Never touch the exposed surface of a floppy disk.
• Do not allow smoking near a computer.

Clean the read/write heads. Special head-cleaning diskettes and solutions

such as isopropyl alcohol and methanol that do not leave a residue when
they dry are available. Cotton wipes are not recommended because of the
fibres they shed. Use cellular foam wipes or a lint-free cloth.

CONCLUSION:

Thus by following these points we can provide good maintenance to the

hardware’s.
