1.0 GENERAL
This specification contains the minimum design, installation, testing and commissioning
requirements for Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems. The Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems are to
assure the safety and protection of both personnel and property during a fire. The design of
the Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems shall conform to this specification and the complete
Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems shall be fully compatible to all components supplied.
2.0 REFERENCES
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of quality for
materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these standards and the
text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a minimum guide.
In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and processes
conforming to one group of codes and standards.

3.0 DEFINITIONS
All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full compliance
with the respective health and safety requirements established by the following:

5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit the following items for review and approval before commencing
the work:
Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data sheets shall be submitted for all nozzles/sprinklers, valves,
alarms, and all other accessories and system components.
Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13 and NFPA 16.
As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate nozzles/sprinklers, systems, locations and symbols on the Shop
Drawings and As-built plans.
Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.
Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA
16.
Include Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for aboveground and underground
piping.
The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality for
approval.
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-Built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
System components and accessories shall be obtained from one source and a single
manufacturer, as far as possible.
All materials and performance shall meet the appropriate NFPA standard.
All equipment shall be constructed using new materials designs and built in
accordance with the best practices of the industry.
Each major item of equipment shall bear the manufacturer’s name, trademark, serial
number and a UL or FM label.
The Foam-Water Sprinkler System shall be provided with a manual release adjacent
to the area where the system is installed and at a remote location.
System actuation shall alarm locally and at a manned location, as required by Project
Specifications.
A foam-water sprinkler system which employs open discharge devices, which are
attached to a piping system that is connected to a water supply through a valve that is
opened by the operation of pilot sprinkler detection system, which is installed in the
same areas as the discharge devices. When this valve opens, water flows into the
piping system and discharges from all discharge devices attached to the system.
that permits water to flow into the sprinkler piping system and to be discharged from
any sprinklers that have activated.
The design of the Foam-Water Sprinkler shall be based on the classification of occupancy as
per NFPA and the Project Specifications.
A Foam-Water Sprinkler shall not be used to extinguish fires involving liquefied or
compressed gases.
The Foam-Water Sprinkler shall be an automatic system connected to a water supply and
equipped with firewater sprinklers/nozzles designed to provide a specific water/foam
discharge and distribution over the protected area.
Water supply for the foam systems shall be compatible with the foam concentrate that is
used.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.
The Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems shall be designed to avoid undue danger to the lives and
safety of its occupants from a fire.
Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems designed by a pipe schedule system shall not be accepted.
The fire protection water supply lines, controlling devices, protective devices, alarm systems,
supervisory devices and related equipment shall be made compatible so that all equipment
shall function together as specified.
The design of the Foam-Water Sprinkler System shall be complete with all necessary
accessories for proper operation.
System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.
The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation technique to
ensure availability of flows and pressures required for correct performance of the system.
Each section or area served by the Foam-Water Sprinkler System shall be capable of being
isolated by one water supply valve only. The isolation valve in each section shall be readily
accessible, and its location clearly and permanently indicated.
Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of NFPA 16 and Project
Specifications.

Discharge duration of the foam solution shall meet the requirements of NFPA 16 and Project
Specifications.
The foam concentrate proportioning system shall consist of a main bladder tank and
a reserve bladder tanks. The bladder tank shall be either vertical or horizontal tank to
suit the site condition.
The pipe diameters for the Foam-Water Sprinkler and Foam-Water Spray System
shall be based on hydraulic calculations to determine the required pressures and
required water flows. Calculation procedures shall be per NFPA 16. Hydraulic
calculations shall be submitted for approval.
9.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 13 & 16. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in
the installation of Foam-Water Sprinkler and Foam-Water Spray Systems.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, nozzles/sprinklers, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL
listed and/or FM approved.
9.1 Fire Sprinklers for Foam-Sprinkler, Dry Pipe, and Preaction Systems
Fire sprinklers shall be UL Listed and/or FM approved. The fire sprinkler selected
shall be located and positioned for which they were designed for.
Fire sprinklers for foam-water wet pipe, dry pipe, and preaction systems shall be
closed head automatic in operation and shall be non-air-aspirating.

All nozzles shall be selected to provide maximum effective spray coverage. Reach of
the spray pattern shall not be greatly affected by moderate wind conditions and shall
be sufficient to ensure water impingement on the object being protected.
Water spray nozzles shall be UL listed and/or FM approved for use in a deluge/spray
system.
Internal strainers are not permitted as they can block the nozzle during operation.
The nozzles shall be provided with a male threaded connection; min. size ½
inch.
Nozzle material to be stainless steel (316) or Monel 400.
The water spray nozzle Manufacturer shall provide full test data on the nozzle, i.e.:
Spray pattern at applicable distance;
Flow rate at applicable pressure;
Distribution rate over the area.
A non-clogging design with passages or orifices not less than 6 mm (1/4 in) in
diameter shall be provided.
Water distribution within the nozzle discharge pattern shall be uniform; hollow-cone
patterns shall not be used.
The selection of the type and size of spray nozzles shall be made with proper
consideration given to factors such as discharge characteristics, physical character of
the hazard involved, ambient conditions, material likely to be burning, and the design
objectives of the system. Water spray nozzles shall be permitted to be placed in any
position, within its listing limitations, necessary to obtain proper coverage of the
protected area. They shall be especially effective in covering exposed; vertical,
horizontal, curved, and irregular shaped surfaces. Nozzle body shall be of brass
construction.
9.3 Sprinkler Pilot Head for Foam-Water Deluge and Spray Systems
Fusible metal or glass bulb type closed sprinkler heads (pilot sprinklers) pressurized
by air shall be used as heat detectors. The sprinkler heads circuit in a given area
shall be connected to the deluge valve for that area. Actuation of one or more
sprinkler heads due to heat shall result in depressurization of the sprinkler heads
circuit, which inturn will cause the actuation of the corresponding deluge valve.
The pilot sprinklers (heat detectors) for water spray systems shall be supplied by 19
mm (3/4 inch) diameter pipe pressurized by firewater and located in accordance with
the following guidelines:
Maximum horizontal spacing for indoor locations shall not exceed 3.7 m.
Pilot sprinklers located outdoors shall be spaced such that the elevation of a
single level of pilot sprinklers and between additional levels of pilot sprinklers
shall not exceed 5.2 m. The horizontal distance between pilot sprinklers shall
not exceed 2.5 m.
The horizontal distance between outdoor pilot sprinklers on a given level can
be permitted to be increased to 3.0 m when the elevation of the first level
does not exceed 4.6 m, the distance between additional levels does not
exceed 3.7 m, and the pilot sprinklers are staggered vertically.
Pilot sprinkler ring will have one pilot sprinkler for each 3.0 m of equipment
circumference (a minimum of two pilot sprinklers).
A pilot sprinkler may be installed approximately 0.6 – 0.9 from the pump seal
as applicable.
Foam concentrates shall be listed for use with the discharge devices and foam
concentrate proportioning equipment with which the system is equipped.
A reserve supply of foam concentrate shall be made available to meet the design
requirements of the system and to put the system back in service within 24 hours
after system has been operated.
9.5 Valves
All valves shall be specifically designed for the Fire Protection Service. All valves
shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13 & 16.
The alarm valve shall be used in a wet pipe foam-water sprinkler system. The valve
shall be UL listed and/or FM approved.
The alarm valve shall be equipped with a removable front cover assembly. Valve
assembly shall be flanged either ends or combination grooved/flanged ends. The
valve shall be designed for vertical or horizontal installation.

Deluge and pneumatic control valves shall be designed to fail in the open position on
loss of control power.
A dry pipe valve shall be used in a foam-water dry pipe system. The valve shall be
UL listed and/or FM approved.
The dry pipe valve shall be equipped with a removable front cover assembly. Valve
assembly shall be flanged either ends or combination grooved/flanged ends. The
valve shall be designed for vertical installation.
Use gate valves for isolation duty. Gate valves shall be UL Listed and/or FM
approved for firewater service.
Check valve shall be manufactured with supply side and system side gauge
connections and a main drain outlet.
Spring loaded type check valve, when selected shall have stainless-steel spring and
hinge pin; for vertical/horizontal mounting.
Swing type check valve, when selected shall have rubber coated clapper assembly
hinged to a removable access cover for periodic inspection as required in NFPA 25.
Check valves shall be UL Listed and/or FM approved for fire protection service.
If the fire sprinkler system is connected to the public water supply, a backflow
preventer shall be provided to prevent contamination of the public water supply.
All backflow preventers shall be UL listed and/or FM approved, and listed for use in
fire protection service.
Piping and fittings used in Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems shall meet the
requirements of NFPA 16 and shall be compatible with the foam concentrate and
foam solution. Pipe and fittings shall meet the requirements of MQ-SP-P-5002 –
PIPING – MATERIAL SPECIFICATION LINE CLASS – PROCESS AND UTILITY
PIPING
Pipe hangers and supports shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13 and MQ-SP-P-
5024 – PIPING SUPPORT ELEMENTS.
UL 346 and/or FM Approved for the application in which it is used. Include 2 sets of
single pole double throw (SPDT) circuit micro-switches for isolated alarm and
auxiliary contacts.
Pressure switches shall be UL Listed and/or FM Approved for the application in which
it is used.

Valve supervisory switches shall be electrical; SPDT; with normally closed contacts.
They shall include design that signals controlled valve is in other than fully open
position. OS&Y switches shall monitor stem movement and shall be complete with
mounting J-bolts. Switch housing shall be finished in red baked enamel. Switches
shall be UL 753 and/or FM approved for the application in which they are used.
2-way swivel fittings siamese connection, 65 mm (2½ in.) size. The FDC shall have
threads to match Local Fire Department hardware.
Integral clapper assembly to separate flow between inlets and brass lugged caps and
chains of same material and finish.
9.20 Alarms
An alarm unit shall include a listed mechanical alarm, horn, or siren or a listed electric
gong, bell, speaker, horn, or siren.
The water motor alarm shall be a rugged, hydraulically operated outdoor alarm
designed for use with automatic wet sprinkler systems. It shall be a lightweight
impeller type alarm gong, capable of producing very loud sound.
The gong, gong mount and water motor housing shall be fabricated from corrosion
resistant alloys or equivalent. Chrome plated or red enameled gong. Non-lubrication
bearings for long life.
The water motor alarm shall be furnished with an approved Y-strainer. All piping to
water motor-operated devices shall be provided with galvanized or other corrosion-
resistant material acceptable by NFPA 13 and of a size not less than 20 mm (¾ in.).
The water motor alarm shall be UL Listed and / or FM Approved for the application in
which it is used.

Alarm signal shall be 150 mm diameter bell; under dome vibrating type; weatherproof;
cast aluminum guard; red finish.
Piping between the sprinkler system and a pressure actuated alarm-initiating device
shall be galvanized or of nonferrous metal or other approved corrosion-resistant
material of not less than 10 mm (3/8 in.) nominal pipe size.
The required pressure gauges shall have a maximum limit not less than twice the
normal system working pressure at the point where installed.
Pressure gauges shall meet or exceed NFPA 13 requirements and are UL Listed
and/or FM Approved for firewater service.
10.0 EXECUTION
All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with NFPA, the manufacturer's
written installation instructions and Project Specifications.
Provisions shall be made to facilitate frequent inspection, testing and maintenance as
described in NFPA 25.
Protect all equipment and materials at all times.
Cover and protect equipment and materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.
11.0 INSTALLATION
All materials and equipment used in the installation of the Foam-Water System shall be new
and the latest design by the manufacturer.
All materials, valves and devices essential to successful system operation shall be UL Listed
and/or FM approved.
System components installed outside, or in the presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be
constructed of materials that will resist corrosion or be suitably factory protected from
corrosion.
They shall be permanently located and shall be solidly mounted. The temperature
limits at the storage tank locations shall be considered so that the listed storage
temperature requirements of the foam concentrate are not exceeded.

11.2 Sprinklers/Nozzles
Sprinklers/nozzles shall be listed for the specific hazard and type of system in which
they shall be used.
Keep sprinklers/nozzles with protective caps or bulb shields contained within the caps
or shields during installation.
Take care not to damage the corrosion-resistant coating, when installing corrosion-
resistant sprinklers/nozzles.
Metal cabinet containing the spare sprinklers/nozzles shall be located adjacent to the
system riser.
Nozzle/sprinkler head guards shall be used for nozzles/sprinklers, which are subject
to damage.
11.6 Piping
Installed piping, valves and fittings shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13, 16 and
Project Specifications.
Use pipe, fittings and hangers that resist corrosion; or apply a protective coating to all
unprotected exposed surfaces of the Foam-Water Sprinkler, where corrosive
conditions exist due to moisture or fumes from corrosive chemicals or both.
At least one listed indicating valve shall be installed in each source of water supply.
Locate all isolation valves where they shall be readily accessible and free of
obstructions.
Provide access doors or panels where control or drain valves are located behind
plaster or gypsum walls or ceilings as necessary. Access and signage shall be
obvious.
Install a check valve where there shall be more than one source of water supply, in
each connection.
Install a listed backflow prevention device where public or potable water supplies
shall be connected with a Foam-Water Sprinkler and Foam-Water Spray System.
The strainer shall be located immediately upstream of the actuation valve. The
strainer shall be of a type that can be cleaned while in service and shall be listed for
fire service.
Pipeline strainers shall be specifically listed for use in firewater supply connections.
Strainers shall be capable of removing from the water all solids of sufficient size to

obstruct the spray nozzles. 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) perforations shall be used, unless
otherwise specified. Mainline pipeline strainers shall be installed so as to be
accessible for flushing or cleaning.
The filter housing shall be carbon steel; for use in salt/brackish water it shall be
internally epoxy coated (min. 400 μm). Filter element material to be stainless steel
(316L) or Monel 400.
Valve supervisory switches shall be used to signal the operation of an isolation valve.
OS&Y switches shall monitor stem movement and shall be complete with mounting J-
bolts
Sleeves shall be provided where piping passes through walls, floors, roofs, beams
and partitions. Sleeves shall be of sufficient length to pass through entire thickness of
walls, floors, roofs and partitions.
One piece or split hinge type metal plates shall be provided for piping passing
through floors, walls and ceilings in exposed areas.
Plates shall be securely anchored in place with setscrews or other approved positive
means.

Provide a pressure gauge at each flow alarm switch location, alarm check valve or
system riser check valve where such devices are present.
A main drain valve shall be furnished for each alarm check, dry pipe, or deluge valve.
Provision shall be made to properly drain all parts of the Foam-Water Sprinkler and
Foam-Water Spray System to a safe location.
Install all system pipe and fittings so that the system can be drained.
Locate all drain valves where they shall be readily accessible and free of
obstructions. Provide access doors or panels where drain valves are located behind
plaster or gypsum walls or ceilings as necessary. Access and signage shall be
obvious.
Install test connections sized and located in accordance with NFPA 13.
Test connections shall be provided approximately 2m above the floor for each foam
system equipped with an alarm device and located at the hydraulically most remote
part.
The water motor alarm shall only be mounted to a rigid wall surface, which will not
permit the striker/gong mount to loosen and fall out of alignment.
Alarms shall be mounted on the outside of the outer walls of each building.
All alarm apparatus shall be located and installed such that all parts are accessible
for inspection, removal and repair; and shall be adequately supported.

Pressure gauges shall be provided in the alarm valve trim to indicate the water
pressure immediately upstream and downstream of the alarm valve. The gauges
shall be provided with an isolation valve for maintenance purposes.
Provide a supervisory switch that is connected to the fire alarm system for each
indicating foam system, foam nozzle/sprinkler zone, main service entrance, and
isolation valves.
Paddle-type waterflow alarm indicators shall only be used for wet pipe system.
Provide identification signs for all system and water supply control valves, sectional
valves, riser control valves, drain valves, test and drain connections and alarm
devices with securely attached identification signs in accordance with NFPA 13.
Provide identification signs at each valve to indicate its function and what it controls.
12.0 COORDINATION
Installation of the Foam-Water Sprinkler and Foam-Water Spray System shall be coordinated
with other work including duct, electric fixtures, structural beams, and storage to prevent
obstructing the nozzles/sprinklers.
Flush all new piping and the existing water supply before interconnecting to the existing and
new firewater piping. Flush the existing water supply and the new piping in accordance with
NFPA 13. Flushing water shall be directed such that it will not cause accidental damage to
property or danger to persons.

14.0 TESTING
All new Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems shall be hydrostatically tested in accordance to NFPA
16.
In addition to the hydrostatic test, Foam-Water Deluge and Spray Systems shall perform a
foam discharge test in accordance to NFPA 16.
The operation of the foam proportioning equipment shall be tested in accordance to NFPA 16.
If any or all of the system components fail the specified tests shall be retested after corrective
measures have been taken.
Following the foam discharge test and the foam proportioning test all piping contaminated
with foam concentrate and foam solution shall be flushed clean in accordance with NFPA 16.
Those portions of the system not normally containing foam concentrate when the system is in
service shall be flushed with water to remove foam residue.
The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in accordance
with Project Specifications.
All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for compliance with
specifications.
All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the manufacturer.
Nozzles/sprinklers must be handled with care.
Nozzles/sprinklers shall be delivered in their original packages, containers or bundles bearing
the brand name and the name of the material.
Nozzles/sprinklers shall be stored in a cool, dry place.
Pipe, fittings, valves, alarm valves and nozzles/sprinkler heads shall be stored with open ends
sealed until removed for installation.
Materials shall be protected from weather, soil; and damage during delivery, storage and
construction.
Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the specifications shall
be immediately replaced.

16.0 CERTIFICATION
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins, and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
