1.0 GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION

A. This specification describes the usage of Telecommunications Symbols, Abbreviations


and Definitions in Telecommunications documents, technical drawings, and site
installations.

1.2 SPECIFICATION INCLUDES

A. Identify the Telecommunications standards that describe the usage of telecommunications


symbols, abbreviations and definitions.

B. Describe the general principles in using the symbols, abbreviations and definitions.

C. Describe the general guidelines in the creation of symbols and abbreviations

1.3 REFERENCES

A. The selection of telecommunications symbols, abbreviations and definitions in technical


documents and drawings shall comply with the latest edition of the references listed
below, unless otherwise noted.

and industrial associations.

1.4 DEFINITIONS

A. Administration: The method for labeling, identification, documentation and usage


needed to implemented moves, additions and changes of the
telecommunications infrastructure.

1.5 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the consistence in using of symbols, abbreviations
and definitions in documents, drawings and site installations.

2.0 GENERAL GUIDELINES

2.1 GENERAL

A. The usage of telecommunications symbols, abbreviations and definitions shall follow the
basic principles described in the following paragraphs.

B. The usage of telecommunications symbols, abbreviations and definitions shall be


consistent with the ones used by MARAFIQ.

2.2 TELECOMMUNCATIONS SYMBOLS

A. Symbols are used for the purpose of simplicity and conserving space in a drawing.

B. There are multiple sources on telecommunications symbols documents defined by


engineering societies and industrial associations. The choice of symbols varies between
organizations. The general rule is to choose the one that is applicable to that industry.

C. The symbols shall be simple and readable.

D. Avoid using the same or look alike symbols for different items.

E. When standard symbols are not available, new symbols can be created.

F. New symbols shall follow the same format, notation and arrangement as existing
symbols.

G. Avoid double assignment and duplication with existing symbols.

H. Each drawing shall have an abbreviation context table in the drawing cover sheet to
explain the functions of the symbols.

2.3 ABBREVIATIONS

A. Abbreviations are entirely for the purpose of conserving space and designer’s time.

B. The abbreviations shall be used only when their meaning is clear. When in doubt, the
notation shall be spelled out.

C. Short words are not abbreviated and are omitted from the list, except where abbreviations
have established by long-standing practice. When letters of a word cannot be reduced to
one-half or less in number, the word should be spelled out.

D. The choice of abbreviations for use on drawings is governed by established practice.


Abbreviations for trade or company names and for words in everyday use such as ‘foot’,
‘pound’, compass points, street, avenue, etc, shall not be listed since they are common
knowledge.

E. Periods are used only to avoid misinterpretation of an abbreviation, and should be omitted
except in cases where the omission would result in commonly used words.

F. The use of hyphens and slant bars has been avoided where practicable.

G. Subscripts are not used in abbreviations. (R10 is not used, but R10 is permissible)

H. Where different terms are represented by the same abbreviation, the context is a guide to
their meaning. Where such terms occur in the same context, they should be spelled out.

I. Each document shall have an abbreviation context table in the introduction sections of the
document to spell out the full word of the abbreviation.

J. Each drawing shall have an abbreviation context table in the drawing cover sheet to spell
out the full word of the abbreviation.

2.4 DEFINITIONS

A. Definitions are used to explain the meaning of technical or commercial terms that are not
common known to people outside the industry.

B. Definitions shall be simple, concise and to the point.

C. Avoid using jargons, technical terms, abbreviations, etc.
