Chapter 8

Project scheduling is the process of determining the order of planned activities. It relates the
work to be accomplished to the people who will perform the work as well as to the budget and
schedule. There are various techniques used in project scheduling such as the bar chart also
known as the Gantt chart which is easy to interpret but difficult to update because
interrelationships are not defined and does not integrate cost and resources with the schedule.
Another technique is the Critical path method (CPM) and a similar technique, the Program
evaluation and Review technique (PERT) is the same as the CPM both referred to as network
analysis system. In project scheduling, it is important to distribute cost with respect to time to
successfully manage a project.

Chapter 9

Tracking work would not be possible without a well-defined plan and a detailed project
schedule. Tracking work is very important because project planning and project scheduling does
go out as planned sometimes. There is always a tendency for schedule delays, increase in cost
and scope growth. A control system must always be monitored, especially the basic components
of the project, the schedule, budget and the work accomplished. These components must be
monitored together, not as individual, because a change in any of the components will affect the
others.

Chapter 10

The outcome of the project depends on how it is planned. The quality, cost and schedule of the
project is dependently based on the effectiveness of design. It is important to ensure that the
design is constructible and that plans and documents are distributed among the project team to
exchange information to efficiently complete the design work as early as possible. More
importantly, the product of design must be approved by the owner and must be within its budget
and schedule. The end result of the design process is to produce plans and specifications in a
timely manner that meet the intended use of the project by the owner.

Chapter 11

The construction phase is the most important phase because the quality of the final project
depends on the quality of the work performed by the contractors and the whole project team as
well. Also, most of the cost and schedule of the project is expended in this phase. For large
projects, the owner requires contractors to bid. This is a way to choose the most efficient and
effective method to be used in construction phase.
Chapter 12

This chapter discusses the steps required to complete a project and turnover to the owner. Project
close out is usually consists of warranties and guarantees of materials and equipment in
accordance with the contract. In this phase, final inspection should be done by the project
manager together with the owner or owner’s representative to ensure that the systems and
equipment in the building is proper working. If everything works out, the project is set to be
closed and the owner will have its feedback and evaluation.
