Self Introduction:
Before we start this English learning program, let me introduce myself. My name is Jeff Richards.
Nice to meet you. I was born in 1949 and I’m 45 years old. I’m a managing consultant, but at the
same time I’ve been devoting myself to studying how to develop our potential abilities as my
lifework.
I believe our meeting isn’t a mere coincident. Your motivation to be able to speak English
certainly brought us together. From now on, I’ll be your English mentor.
First, I’d like to know a little bit your background. I’m going to ask you some questions. Please
answer them in English, of course.
What’s your name?... oh, cool name. How old are you?... Wow, you look much younger. Where
are you from?... Well, I’m not very familiar with the name of places in Japan yet. What’s it
famous for? Is that so? How interesting! Will you take me there sometime? So Why do you want
to master English? Ok, I understand. I promise you that I’ll guide you until you’re able to speak
English. To achieve your goal, you have to keep practicing these lessons. How about this? Can
you promise me you’ll do that? Ok, now let’s get started, shall we?
2. Establishing Your Goal:
Let me ask you a question once more.
Why you want to master English?
Your first lesson is to establish your goal. It’s quite simple. But your success in this program
depends on whether or not your whole-heartedly committed to it. So, I want you to do your
best.
Everyone has his or her own motive in learning English. Some might need English at work or
some might think learning English is advantageous for them. Some might want to learn English
because they travel overseas and some might simply think that it’s useful if they can speak
English.
There are all short of levels of English comprehension. For instance, there are levels from the
English needed to enjoy sightseeing or shopping overseas up to the level needed to negotiate on
the international business scene without an interpreter. And then there’s level of English of
being able to interpret or write a book in English just like a native speaker. Learning English is
only a means. The important part is what you’re going to do with the English you’ve learned and
whether the goal you set for yourself is attractive enough.
What do you think? Is your motive compelling? Do you think the achievement of your goal will
enrich your life?
Let’s think about your goal in greater detail. Name five or more benefits you can gain by
mastering English. You have to think in English of course, though. The benefits you’ll gain
through mastering English might be things such as respect from people around you, enjoyment
of overseas travel, or the ability to earn a higher income as a result of new business
opportunities. You can enjoy English movies without reading subtitles. Anyhow, it’s good that
your possibility will expand. When you have your thoughts in order write down the benefits in
your textbook and read them aloud.
Wisdom about learning:
Live as if you were to die tomorrow – learn as if you were to die forever
Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps
learning stays young. The greatest in life is to keep your brain young
The more I learn the more I realize I don’t know – the more I know the more I want to
learn
3. Image training practice (1)
The next stage is image training. I suggest you try some easy exercises to start with. Allow
yourself to relax. It’s best for you to relax in a chair alone in a quite room. You start the training
by visualizing the benefits you gain by mastering English. Now, are you ready? Let’s start!
4. Image training practice (2)
Lightly close your eyes.
Slowly take a deep breathe.
Breathe out gradually, keeping your clips puckered.
After you exhaled all the air from your lungs, take a breath so that fresh air flows in through
your nose.
As you breathe out, imagine all your negative feelings and stress flowing away.
As you breathe in, imagine positive energy from the universe flowing into your body.
The negative elements in your body pour out, once after another, every time you breathe out.
You’re healed throughout your body whenever you breathe in.
Repeat deep breathing for a while and enjoy the feeling of relaxation.
You’re certainly going to master English by repeating this English program.
Now, visualize yourself next year.
You’re an English expert now.
Where are you now?
What do you see around you?
You’re pleasantly chatting in English with a native speaker of English.
You’re full of confident and joy.
The Japanese around you look enviously at you.
Enjoy your image of success for a while.
Well now, let’s get back to reality.
Now, in order to become the person you want to be, there is something you must do.
What is it? That right.
Now, let’s get to work achieving your dreams!
Breathe out slowly and deeply as you clearly imagine your resolution.
Slowly open your eyes as you breathe in.
5. Image training practice (2)
How did the image training go? Could you actually feel joy and excitement? It’s quite all right if
you can’t picture thing easily at first, but I’d like you to repeat this program every day. This is
effective not merely for learning English but also becoming your ideal self. Image training is
practiced by people of various occupations, such as top-ranking executives and athletes, and it’s
really brought them benefits. By merely inputting specific images of your success into the
subconscious, your sleeping power will start to fully operate. It’s marvelous, isn’t it?
I’d like to introduce a good book regarding image training below. Should you be interested in
learning more about image training, I recommend you read it and practice what you’ve read.
6. Putting your goal down in words
Now that the joy you’ll experience when you master English is clear, I’m sure that your
enthusiasm for learning English is all the greater. Make your enthusiasm even stronger with the
procedure below. First, write down what you imagined in the prior training in detail in your note
book. How you write is up to you, but make sure you do it in English. I’ve provided some
examples in the textbook for your reference. They might be helpful for you. However, the most
important thing is that you must be profoundly convinced of what you’re writing. And if
possible, write down things that even involve your life itself. It may sound a bit over-the-top, but
I’d like you to regard mastering English as an indispensable element for you to achieve your
dreams and, in a sense, even you mission in life. I’ve a definite reason to say so. As a side
business, I have guided a great number of Japanese in their study of English. And from that
experience, I’ve realized that without exception those who had mastered English in a short
period of time had a clear sense of purpose. That is, they were pretty fast to soak up knowledge
because they had a distinct goal to achieve by mastering English and were confident that they’d
be happy by achieving it. I believe my own mission is to make you happy through your English
studies. I hear you say in the back of your mind, “No, thanks. I’m fine without you help”. But you
can’t stop me from doing it. It can’t be helped because this is my mission. So,I’m going to talk
about things other than learning English, such as my philosophy about life and ways of life.
Needless to say, I’m willing to listen to your objections. But I’ll only accept them if they’re in
English. Oh well, I’m a bit off-track. Write your images down in your notebook and read them
aloud every day.
Image sample:
My mission:
I’m going to make all people I encounter happy.
I’m going to deliver joy to many people as possible through my work
In addition to learning English, I want you to try to make a habit of some other customs.
First, put you shoes neatly at the entrance. When you see the shoes of others are piled in a
mess, arrange in order without complaining. Second, say “hello” to everyone cheerfully. A
piece of cake, right? But I hardly ever see people exchange greetings in everyday life.
Although this is such as simple things to do, you’ll be amazed by the results. In any case,
start it right now. Say “hello” with a big smile, if possible. You’ll notice a change in yourself
and a change in the people around you within a week. Lastly, try to straighten your back. I
have a lot to say about posture, but for now, just try to hold yourself up all the time.
We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.
