Self Introduction:
Before we start this English learning program, let me introduce myself. My name is Jeff Richards.
Nice to meet you. I was born in 1949 and I’m 45 years old. I’m a managing consultant, but at the
same time I’ve been devoting myself to studying how to develop our potential abilities as my
lifework.
I believe our meeting isn’t a mere coincident. Your motivation to be able to speak English
certainly brought us together. From now on, I’ll be your English mentor.
First, I’d like to know a little bit your background. I’m going to ask you some questions. Please
answer them in English, of course.
What’s your name?... oh, cool name. How old are you?... Wow, you look much younger. Where
are you from?... Well, I’m not very familiar with the name of places in Japan yet. What’s it
famous for? Is that so? How interesting! Will you take me there sometime? So Why do you want
to master English? Ok, I understand. I promise you that I’ll guide you until you’re able to speak
English. To achieve your goal, you have to keep practicing these lessons. How about this? Can
you promise me you’ll do that? Ok, now let’s get started, shall we?
2. Establishing Your Goal:
Let me ask you a question once more.
Why you want to master English?
Your first lesson is to establish your goal. It’s quite simple. But your success in this program
depends on whether or not your whole-heartedly committed to it. So, I want you to do your
best.
Everyone has his or her own motive in learning English. Some might need English at work or
some might think learning English is advantageous for them. Some might want to learn English
because they travel overseas and some might simply think that it’s useful if they can speak
English.
There are all short of levels of English comprehension. For instance, there are levels from the
English needed to enjoy sightseeing or shopping overseas up to the level needed to negotiate on
the international business scene without an interpreter. And then there’s level of English of
being able to interpret or write a book in English just like a native speaker. Learning English is
only a means. The important part is what you’re going to do with the English you’ve learned and
whether the goal you set for yourself is attractive enough.
What do you think? Is your motive compelling? Do you think the achievement of your goal will
enrich your life?
Let’s think about your goal in greater detail. Name five or more benefits you can gain by
mastering English. You have to think in English of course, though. The benefits you’ll gain
through mastering English might be things such as respect from people around you, enjoyment
of overseas travel, or the ability to earn a higher income as a result of new business
opportunities. You can enjoy English movies without reading subtitles. Anyhow, it’s good that
your possibility will expand. When you have your thoughts in order write down the benefits in
your textbook and read them aloud.
Wisdom about learning:
 Live as if you were to die tomorrow – learn as if you were to die forever
 Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps
learning stays young. The greatest in life is to keep your brain young
 The more I learn the more I realize I don’t know – the more I know the more I want to
learn
3. Image training practice (1)
The next stage is image training. I suggest you try some easy exercises to start with. Allow
yourself to relax. It’s best for you to relax in a chair alone in a quite room. You start the training
by visualizing the benefits you gain by mastering English. Now, are you ready? Let’s start!
4. Image training practice (2)
Lightly close your eyes.
Slowly take a deep breathe.
Breathe out gradually, keeping your clips puckered.
After you exhaled all the air from your lungs, take a breath so that fresh air flows in through
your nose.
As you breathe out, imagine all your negative feelings and stress flowing away.
As you breathe in, imagine positive energy from the universe flowing into your body.
The negative elements in your body pour out, once after another, every time you breathe out.
You’re healed throughout your body whenever you breathe in.
Repeat deep breathing for a while and enjoy the feeling of relaxation.
You’re certainly going to master English by repeating this English program.
Now, visualize yourself next year.
You’re an English expert now.
Where are you now?
What do you see around you?
You’re pleasantly chatting in English with a native speaker of English.
You’re full of confident and joy.
The Japanese around you look enviously at you.
Enjoy your image of success for a while.
Well now, let’s get back to reality.
Now, in order to become the person you want to be, there is something you must do.
What is it? That right.
Now, let’s get to work achieving your dreams!
Breathe out slowly and deeply as you clearly imagine your resolution.
Slowly open your eyes as you breathe in.
5. Image training practice (2)
How did the image training go? Could you actually feel joy and excitement? It’s quite all right if
you can’t picture thing easily at first, but I’d like you to repeat this program every day. This is
effective not merely for learning English but also becoming your ideal self. Image training is
practiced by people of various occupations, such as top-ranking executives and athletes, and it’s
really brought them benefits. By merely inputting specific images of your success into the
subconscious, your sleeping power will start to fully operate. It’s marvelous, isn’t it?
I’d like to introduce a good book regarding image training below. Should you be interested in
learning more about image training, I recommend you read it and practice what you’ve read.
6. Putting your goal down in words
Now that the joy you’ll experience when you master English is clear, I’m sure that your
enthusiasm for learning English is all the greater. Make your enthusiasm even stronger with the
procedure below. First, write down what you imagined in the prior training in detail in your note
book. How you write is up to you, but make sure you do it in English. I’ve provided some
examples in the textbook for your reference. They might be helpful for you. However, the most
important thing is that you must be profoundly convinced of what you’re writing. And if
possible, write down things that even involve your life itself. It may sound a bit over-the-top, but
I’d like you to regard mastering English as an indispensable element for you to achieve your
dreams and, in a sense, even you mission in life. I’ve a definite reason to say so. As a side
business, I have guided a great number of Japanese in their study of English. And from that
experience, I’ve realized that without exception those who had mastered English in a short
period of time had a clear sense of purpose. That is, they were pretty fast to soak up knowledge
because they had a distinct goal to achieve by mastering English and were confident that they’d
be happy by achieving it. I believe my own mission is to make you happy through your English
studies. I hear you say in the back of your mind, “No, thanks. I’m fine without you help”. But you
can’t stop me from doing it. It can’t be helped because this is my mission. So,I’m going to talk
about things other than learning English, such as my philosophy about life and ways of life.
Needless to say, I’m willing to listen to your objections. But I’ll only accept them if they’re in
English. Oh well, I’m a bit off-track. Write your images down in your notebook and read them
aloud every day.

Image sample:
My mission:
 I’m going to make all people I encounter happy.
 I’m going to deliver joy to many people as possible through my work

What I should do to fulfill my mission:

 I should master English

 I should improve my communication skills
 I should always be grateful to everyone and everything

Plan for implementation:

 I’ll practice English listening comprehension using my MD while committing

 I’ll intensively study for an hour after I come home from work. Even if I come home late
because of a drinking party or the like, I’ll study English for at least 20 minutes.
7. Practical use of A “Treasure Map”
Now, I’d like to introduce you to an even better method. Making your own “Treasure Map”. I
used a B3 size cork board for my Treasure Map. On the board I pasted paper on which my
mission and my dreams that I want to realize were written and I also put some photos and
figures on it. So that I can visualize my mission and dreams clearly. The treasure map is hung on
the wall in my room and that actually made a number of my dreams come true. Let’s me tell you
the most delightful thing that happened with the treasure map. When I was making the map, my
daughter happened to be there. She seemed very interested in the method and put some
photos of Yorkshire terriers, the greed that she has been wanting on my treasure map. Two
weeks later, I was told that the friend of mine wanted me to have a puppy since his Yorkshire
terriers had just had a little. I hear that such as coincident it called synchronization. Ironically, it
wasn’t my own but my daughter’s dream at first came true after I made a Treasure Map. But I’m
quite happy with that. Since I love my daughter, my daughter happiness means my happiness.
As you can imagine I’ve been fascinated with the treasure map ever since. I really recommend
you try this. I assure you making a treasure map is itself exciting. See the reference book below
if you’re interested in studying A Treasure Map in detail.
8. Get Started Now
Now, if you come this far, all is left for you is to decide where you’re implement your plan. I
should set the time limit for achievement before you actually get started on your work. Fix date
deadline and your target with something like “I’m going to master English well enough to
communicate with foreigner in English by this day next year”. Write down this resolution in your
notebook with today’s date. You shouldn’t postpone the starting date making an excuse such as
you’re going to start it after you read the whole textbook first or something like that. The best
time for you to start is when you feel like it. “Time is Money” is such a famous proverb, but I’d
like you to remember another version “Timing is Money” too. It’s almost impossible to make
nothing but one hundred percent correct decisions in all of various aspects of your life.
However, it’s much better to move forward by acting on your plan than to try nothing and just
postpone the date. Even if you failed, you can learn many things from the experience. Don’t
worry! I’ll always be by your side. Now, let’s get started toward realizing your dreams!
 Wisdom to fulfill your dreams: All our dreams can come true if you have a courage to
pursue them.
9. Method of English study-The English Brain:
Now, I’m going to talk about more specific English learning program. First, let’s go back and
think about learning English again. I’m coming to contact with many Japanese and I always
surprise by their enthusiasm to master English and tremendous amount of time they spent on it.
But why can’t they speak English in spite of all their efforts? There may be many reasons for
that, but to put it simply, Japanese aren’t trained to speak English. In other words, the Japanese
haven’t created English Brain. Let’s me explain it with a simple illustration. In conventional
English learning program, it’s as if you simultaneously grew vegetables of Japanese language and
English language in the soil of Japanese. The methods of raising these two kinds of vegetables
are completely different. Accordingly, the vegetables of English will soon die no matter how
hard you worked. Well, some of them will survive with difficulty as variety, though. For example,
“Radio” and “Rajio” or “business” and “Bejinesu”. But apparently, those words are grown as
Japanese vegetables not as English vegetables. What can you do then? You should buy a new
field for raising English vegetables separately from Japanese field. You plant English vegetables
in new field and build the English house on the field. When you use Japanese, you go to
Japanese field and when you use English you go back to English field again. In this state, you’re
call bilingual. This is what I call creation of English Brain. Now, you understand, don’t you?
10. Making a habit of studying English:
Next, I’d like to talk about how to create an English Brain quickly without fail. The optimum
situation to become a fluent speaker of English is to place yourself in circumstances where you
can’t live unless you can speak English. But since you’re in Japan and allow to use Japanese
every day, it isn’t easy for you to practice in such circumstances. You might be able to find the
comparable situation if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend who can speak nothing but English.
But this isn’t so easy either. After all, you have to learn English consciously, and when you’re
preoccupied with studying or learning English is your left brain that tends to function. This gets
you nowhere fast. The biggest reason why is that you have to somehow make extra time for
studying English in your daily life.
11. Making a habit of studying English (2)
What can we do then? The smartest thing is to accustom yourself to studying English. In order to
do so, you should try to practice this program every day. Sometimes you might be busy to study,
in such cases, you should make your learning time shorter. Even ten minutes of study is
sufficient to make the English lesson apart of your routine. When you start this program you can
properly keep up easy during a first week since you’re so pumped. However, you might tend to
slack off with time, then you might skip the lesson, saying: “oh man, I had such a hard day. I’ll
just forget the lesson for today. It won’t make a big different anyway. But when you allow
yourself to skip the occasional lesson, you’re likely to avoid your study frequently and properly
end up quitting. Some people can see the fruits of their diligence rather quickly, but others are
slower learner. They might not notice the improvement even three months later. Even so, you
must believe in my words. You will be able to speak English. Sooner or later, you’ll find yourself
naturally responding to my questions in English. It has nothing to do with your ability if you can’t
respond in English right now. It’s just because your English brain hasn’t been felt with necessary
words yet. Before long, your English brain will be felt with their sufficient amount of English
words. It’s at that very time that you suddenly start to comprehend and speak English. When
the time comes, English words will pour out of your mouth like a stream of water. Let me urge
you once again. Make a habit of learning English. Make it apart of your daily routine, just like
having a meal. I bet it’d be pretty hard for you if you won’t allow to eat any food all day long.
That is because your body need to absorb nutrition to support you doing your activities. It’s the
same way with knowledge. Knowledge is as indispensable as nutrition for your internal
development. If you accustom yourself to the program so that you can go to sleep in peace
unless you listen to the CD. You’ll be practically halfway there.
 Wisdom about diligence:
Diligence is the mother of good luck.
Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety nine percent perspiration.
12. The habit of thinking in English:
Well, we’ve already talked about routinizing English learning. But I suppose some of you might
automatically use the left brain as soon as you hear the word “learning”. But don’t worry, this
program contains many devices to activate your right brain so you can count on me for that.
Nevertheless, I’d like to introduce you the best way to use your right brain. You should make a
habit of thinking in English in your every day life. All explain the method of doing so below. First,
you should write some things in English. Writing make your mind set firm. Writing is also
important to help you get your thoughts ironed out. I strongly recommend you get accustom to
writing. How about getting a notebook exclusively for English writing? A datebook is also do. In
the notebook you might write down English phrases that you like or write your daily doing in
English just like a diary. This can be surprisingly fun once you get used to it. Of the datebooks
available I believe that “Franklin planner” is the best. Thankfully, you can even get English
version in Japan. It’s really useful for those who want to make a habit of writing in English. How
does that sound? Will you try it?
13. The habit of thinking English:
Next, you should read the English books. Reading enriches our minds. You should be
accustomed to exposing yourself to as many good books as possible. For improving English, I
recommend that you start with English books in the field that you’re most interested in. You can
satisfy your intellectual interest at the same time, killing two birds with one stone. Aim to read
through as many books as possible rather than intensively read each one. However, you need to
master certain techniques to do so. See the reference book below.
Wisdom about reading:
 The reading of all good books is like the conversation with a finest man of past
centuries.
 If you would not be forgotten as soon as you’re dead. Either write things worth reading
or do things worth writing.
14. The habit of thinking English:
Even more important is learning English through communication with the others. You don’t
even have to go abroad because you have many chances to communicate with native speakers
of English in Japan. As a matter of fact, I’m now developing another program called “the
program to make friends with native speaker of English”. So, although I’ll omit the detail here,
you can have a lot of chances to make friends with native speakers of English in Japan if only you
muster up a little courage. After all, language is a tool for communication as well as transmitting
and collecting information. To get used to the tool, you should frequently use it. You can learn
how to use it with practice.
Apart from learning English, you can learn a lot from others. Find a mentor for life. That is to say,
you should find someone that you can truly respect. You might find one in historical person. Or
you might find the ideal person in your own backyard. In that case, you can directly learn various
things from that person. It’s also important to learn from the failures of others. Life is not long
enough for you to experience all the failures in this world. As the proverb says: “Learn wisdom
by the follies of others”.
Wisdom about human relation:
 Be the change you wish to see in other people.
 An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than the wild beast; a wild beast may
wound your body, but the evil friend will wound your mind.
 By all means marry. If you have a good wife, you’ll become happy, and if you get a bad
one, you’ll become a philosopher.
 The game is my wife. It demands loyalty and responsibility, and it give me back
fulfillment and peace.
15. Establishing good personal habits:
I’m afraid I might sound a bit intrusive, but I’d like to talk about habits. Not only learners of
English, but also almost all people who make success of something inevitably have good habits.
I’d like you to try to accustom yourself to good habits, while at the same time, getting out of bad
habits. It’s not that hard. Try little by little, starting from the easiest one for you. Don’t try too
hard from the beginning, or else end up discouraged and quit somewhere along the line.
They say that all the “big shots” in the United States have the same good habits. They are
Benjamin Franklin’s thirteen virtues. You should try to develop those habits, too.
 Temperance: Don’t eat so much that you become sluggish or stupid. Don’t drink so
much that you are lofty or better than others.
 Silence: Don’t say anything that won’t benefit yourself or others. Try to stay away
from conversation of little value.
 Order: All of your things should have a proper place. Each part of your business should
have a proper time for it to be done.
 Resolution: Firmly decide to do those things that you should do. Be certain to do what
you firmly decide to do. Follow through.
 Frugality: Don’t spend money unless it will bring good to you or others. Don’t waste
anything.
 Industry: Don’t waste time. Always be doing something useful. Eliminate unnecessary
actions.
 Sincerity: Don’t hurt others by deception. Your thoughts should be innocent and just.
if you say anything, say it with truth, innocent, and justice.
 Justice: Don’t harm other withhold benefits that you should give them.
 Moderation: Don’t go too far. Don’t grow resentful at the pain others have caused
you, but put up with others as much as you think they deserve.
 Cleanliness: Don’t accept an unclean body, clothes or house.
 Tranquility: Don’t get upset about little things or common or unavoidable accidents.
 Chastity: Don’t have sexual intercourse often except for your health or in order to
have a baby. Never have sex to the point when you become sluggish or weak or harm
your own or another’s peace or reputation.
 Humanity: Try to be like Jesus and Socrates.

In addition to learning English, I want you to try to make a habit of some other customs.
First, put you shoes neatly at the entrance. When you see the shoes of others are piled in a
mess, arrange in order without complaining. Second, say “hello” to everyone cheerfully. A
piece of cake, right? But I hardly ever see people exchange greetings in everyday life.
Although this is such as simple things to do, you’ll be amazed by the results. In any case,
start it right now. Say “hello” with a big smile, if possible. You’ll notice a change in yourself
and a change in the people around you within a week. Lastly, try to straighten your back. I
have a lot to say about posture, but for now, just try to hold yourself up all the time.

Wisdom about habits:

 We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.
