Very Important:

• Read all of the instructions prior to commencing the assessment

• Non conformance may result in penalisation
• You must sign an Assessment Submission Cover Sheet and attach it to your

using Turnitin software.

Assessment Specific Advice

Marking Criteria
The marking scale and criteria of standards for each grade are defined by the University
Modular Framework regulations

Module Learning Outcomes and Key Skills

Learning Outcomes Assessed:
a) Relate skin structure and properties to the impact of chemical and
biochemical processes and their outcomes, in terms of the changes to the
material.

b) From an understanding of the properties of raw materials, be able to predict

the outcome of process changes.
Key Skills Assessed:
c) From the principles of the chemistry and biochemistry of processing, be able
to define when problems in leather production begin to arise and redress the
errors.
Key Skills Developed:
d) From an understanding of the scientific principles of processing, be able to
develop new processes, confident in the outcome of experimental change.

Your Assessment should include the following:

This assessment is to show the student’s knowledge of proteins and in particular
collagen, which is the major fibrous protein of skin/leather.

What should be included is;

• Introduction to proteins in general, including building blocks and hierarchy.
• Relate the general protein hierarchy to that of collagen.
• Use the amino acid sequences of each protein (Elastin and Collagen) to explain
their individual structures and reactivity?
• Propose how these properties might be utilised in leather processing?

What is not Required?

This is to show an understanding of Leather Science and should not be a discussion from
a technology perspective.

General Advice for LEA Assignments

• You may find it helpful to read through the whole assessment before starting to
answer the first question;
• You should certainly read through the whole assessment before starting to answer
any part of it;
• Note the wording of the assessment, in particular the action verbs and ensure that
you answer the question asked and not the one that you think should have been
asked!
• LEA are science modules; hence your answers should be scientific in tone;
• Where required, present arguments that are logical and contain statements which are
supported by scientific information expressed in the correct scientific terminology;
• Your tutor will not look favourably on over-generalised discursive writing that fails to
address the points at issue;
• For most written answers, credit will be given for the overall ‘quality’ of the writing –
for clarity, structure and appropriate style – as well as for the content

Presentation of the Assessment

• All answers must be printed or typed on sheets of A4 paper unless stated otherwise.
• Present work in clear English with a good standard of grammar.
• When answering questions requiring calculations and data presentation, remember
to:
- present your answer clearly;
- include all steps in a calculation;
- use SI units;
- give your answers to an appropriate number of significant figures;
- give all graphs, tables and diagrams a title;
- clearly label axes on graphs.
• It is essential that all work that is not your own is referenced appropriately (see
Plagiarism below)
• The Study Skills Guide details an acceptable method of referencing.
• Where reference is made to legislation, guidelines and principles, state the full name
and date.
• Presentations must be produced using Microsoft Powerpoint (Windows 2003)

Plagiarism
What constitutes plagiarism or cheating?
If you submit an assignment that contains work that is not your own, without indicating
this, you are committing ‘plagiarism’. This might occur in an assignment when:
• Using a choice phrase or sentence that you have come across;
• Copying word-for-word direct directly from a text
• Using text downloaded from the internet
• Borrowing statistics or assembled facts from another person or source;
• Copying or downloading figures, photographs, pictures or diagrams without
acknowledging your sources
• Copying from the notes or essays of a fellow student.

Submission of Assessment
• One copy of your Assessment must comprise your answers stapled together with the
signed Assessment Submission Cover Sheet which includes the Student Declaration
• All your assessment sheets should be stapled together or inserted into an appropriate
binder – the assessment is required to be photocopied by the tutor and the pages
should be easy to separate.
• Submit the assessment to the Assignment Handling Office by the Deadline Date
• Assignments handed in after the Deadline Date will be penalised (See Course Guide
for details).
• Assignments should also be submitted using Turnitin.
Notification of Grades
Results and or Assessments will be returned within three weeks of the submission
deadline date.
